Yeah he was playing a dark elf, but because he was wearing black make-up people took it as being blackface and got the episode pulled.

I get the whole historical context of why blackface is offensive, but Chan was parodying something that isn't even human so it makes the whole decision ever more stupid.

Was he in the running for the role originally? Was that why he played Pierce in Abed’s fantasy sitcom in the gas leak year?

Similar to Bob Odenkirk playing the Philly version of Michael Scott late in the run, after he’d come second to Steve Carell when it was being originally cast.
