Yeah, they kept losing players, but what kept Adelaide competitive (up until the camp did a 2007GF number on them), was they kept drafting those talls. It was about the only part of Adelaide's operation I was envious of. We know (and history tells) that all those smalls may look great in the early and late part of seasons, but in winter and when the real stuff starts quality talls are essential. Long may the Sam Grayification of Adelaide continue.
Your Sam Grayification comment made me think, is this Nicks bringing his experience under Ken and pushing Ogilvy to ditch the Rendell draft book, rather than Ogilvy independently changing tack?

Rendell's ability to identify and then follow thru and draft tall's, means I will always have respect him for his ability to identify talent, even if he says some dumb things on Trade Radio trying to sex things up.

Is the current approach at Adelaide evidence that we've been too harsh on Ken? Could it be that Ken's move away from mosquito fleet is because he no longer has Nicks around as an influence. 2019 we were often forced towards a shorter forward line thanks to Charlie's broken leg and the other tall options not being very good.

I can't believe the praise being heaped on Carlton by the pundits for 'nailing the draft' with this one pick.

They've always used their high picks to build sustained succesd

The Victorian Carltonbot journos had their bylines ready well before the draft..

Carlton Nails AFL Draft
Carlton are thrilled to have picked [insert name] in the draft last night.
After our successful trading efforts, we were thrilled that [insert name]
fell to our pick. [insert name] is exactly the type of player that we were
targeting to round out our list, which is now complete. Bring on 2022!

Interesting that Sam Hayes brother is listed as one to watch in next yrs top drafts - 195cm defender.
Lewis Hayes

Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro

Key defender

A tall defender worth tracking through next year after showing promising signs as an under-17s prospect with Vic Metro. Hayes, whose older brother Sam is a developing ruckman at Port Adelaide, is a good overhead mark and distributes the ball well out of defence when it's in his hands.

That 100,000 members and 3 flags in 5 years copying of Richmond call from Richo was so delusional and cringeworthy.
It was fine, we got within a kick of beating Richmond in a prelim who went on to win their 3rd flag. Add to that it took a free kick, albeit a correct decision but one that would just as often get missed.

The problem is it was clearly empty words, because after embarrassing the club in this years prelim what’s really changed ?
We’ve kept a dud coach, let a highly rated assistant move to a rival club and moved in one player. A player we set a price of a first rounder for, let go for a long way less than that.

Setting goals and high standards is what we should expect, not being prepared to back those comments up and make hard decisions is where the problem lies.

Wasn't it reported that someone at the crows said they couldn't believe we cut and would live to regret cutting lienart?
What pick did they use to swoop on him?
Surely he gets picked up over pre-season or in the mid-season draft.

Or maybe he doesn't, because despite this board having a love affair with him for some reason, he's 27 and he's not actually that good.

Disagree..most of us on our board are dead set sure he will be at port at some stage of his career. Far more likely than him coming to the crows
Doesn't mean you won't try hard. You already had one crack at getting him and if nothing else you will want us to pay the piper.
