To be honest ,, tell me which QLD players should of been drafted ...lets face it there are no young players that stand out .
Dont forget though over the past years we have had a good number of players drafted,,, just the flow of the tide I guess
Number 3 for Broadbeach looked good to me on grand final day, young defender and I reckon he could play AFL

Goalkicker ,, thats Harrison Arnold whom is a good young talent ,,,was on Southports list in 2020 . played a few games but came back to Broady for 2021..
He is a very good young player , but he is not AFL material . The QAFL is full of good young players , but they are not AFL draft quality

Honest response

yeah hopefully some better results in the rookie draft but definitely disappointing especially as vic boys have barely played for 2 years and it’s not considered that stronger draft
Where’d you get that idea from?

Recruiters were talking about how good this draft crop looked after their U16 championships in 2019. At the time, it was said to potentially nearly as strong as the 2018 draft crop, but much deeper. Yes, it’s got limited KPP’s, but a lot of good mids and flankers.

Two years of covid has meant we haven’t seen much from Victoria, but they still had a strong representation at the draft.

No idea what happened with our academy kids this year, with our 19 year olds filling out our VFL team this year.

Does the system with the Academies need to be reviewed. What about Qld's obsession with Female football, if you visit the QAFL website you would have to ask if boys still play footy in Qld !!

The question should be why aren’t people covering the boys as much as the girls rather than why the “obsession” with girls..

The academy is designed to get players draft ready? If no one is getting drafted, it’s clearly not doing what it’s designed for. Although I would say the huge amounts of kids invited in all ages, both male and female, it’s probably achieving goals financially..

If you had a 16 year old in QLD that can play a bit you would be getting to Melbourne in a heartbeat.

QLD Footy definitely not rated by recruiters and Accademy’s up here not producing or improving local talent.

kids being let down badly by their so called system. Even Lions VFL now realising by taking 20+ year olds from QAFL as Accademy kids got shown up at that level last year.

I'd have thought COVID has severely impacted the number of kids from the northern states getting drafted. Sure, footy has been played up here far down than Victoria, but I don't think that really fazes recruiters, the majority having seen the Vic kids playing since they were 12yos. AFL lists have been cut for the last few years looms and rookie list players can now stay on for longer - these to me are far more likely reasons why numbers are down. Our local kids are more likely to be drafted late in the draft or as rookies but the Lions and (to a lesser extent) the Suns haven't had the space on their lists to accommodate them.

I'm not saying the Academy has been or is performing optimally. Far from it. But there have definitely been some extenuating circumstances making it hard to judge how the changes brought in over the last couple of years are working.

That’s complete BS

what are the changes you think they have made?

they are still inviting 200 kids, instead of making it a genuinely elite program. Talented kids will improve and get better if they are training regularly with elite kids of similar or better ability, instead because of the sheer volume - the standard is woeful, blokes are in the academy that can barely get a kick at colts level. there is absolutely nothing elite about it.

The idea is right, but while they keep throwing a blanket over 200+ kids, there will be no progress.

Spin it however you want and make all the circumstancial excuses you like but the scope of the QLD Academies is to produce players of AFL standard so they are drafted. The evidence from this draft says they have been an abstract failure

Definitely agree with this. Particularly in the younger age groups the amount of kids in the academy is ridiculous. With all respect kids that are Div 2 being in the academy is not serving a purpose except maybe a revenue purpose….

Then these “superstars” come to back club land and their parents think they should be starting on ball every week because they are academy players.

Return to Qld squad of 26 (improves standard in squad) and play Div 2 Nationals and play senior footy for the majority of the season. No topping up for AFL reserves but playing QAFL
- simply a return to the old system.

Disagree here it's not ridiculous it's moronic.
Why are you blowing wind up the arses of so many kids and parents.
I have coached young lads into state teams right through to afl level .
All be it a long time ago.
What I can say is I've seen what qualifys to say your an academy player these days.
It's not that impressive.
I 100% agree with thommo that when the best train alone your improvement is substantial.
My only thoughts can be that they need lots of kids as cannon fodder.
Do they charge for the privilege of joining an academy.
Or is the thought process everyone should get a chance. Don't want to upset anyone buy having to tell them the truth about where the kids footy is really at.

Gee you look at last year. Saxon crozier had a good year and he was talked up a bit. No one picked him up and he is a good footballer

Yep, and Saxon won't be playing footy at all in 2022, just another kid chewed up and spat out by a system that not only doesn't produce what it's supposed to, but also leaves a trail of destruction behind it with kids confidence in tatters and giving the game away .

They pay to be in the academy, hence the massive numbers...

this blanket system seems to work for swans. Not sure anyone should even pretend that talent can be easily identified at 12yrs of age. It’s more about how many get kept in or possibly not added in due course imo
