2022 Draft Rankings/ Names to look for of note

*note; Alex Condon has accepted an AIS basketball scholarship

God I've been waiting for absolutely ages for this opportunity! Early disclaimer, this is just my top 22 for next years crop early on, so some positions are iffy at best!

FB: Sam Gilbey (Claremont/ WA), Jedd Busslinger (East Perth/ WA), Jonti Schuback (Gippsland Power/ VIC C)

Gilbey is a speedy rebounding defender out of Claremont, with a piercing left foot out of defence, his attacking flair from the back half puts him in a position to transition into a Wing long term, standing at 185 cm, he's a nice height to play on a range of opponents, but his style forces them to defend him moreso than him doing the defending. Busslinger is a classic intercepting tall defender, not too dissimilar to Rhett Bazzo from this year, but I'd argue more damaging with his disposal and more willing to push up the ground, the 195 cm East Perth product will have his work cut out for him at the champs next season with the strength of the tall forwards. Jonti, otherwise known as 'The Jont', is another smooth mover like Gilbey, but is arguably better on the wings or in the thick of things as a rover, also possessing a damaging boot and speed.

HB: Kobe Ryan (West Adelaide/ SA), Harry Barnett (West Adelaide/ SA), Jed Hagan (East Fremantle/ WA)

Ryan is 100% better as a midfielder, but due to not many others in the side being able to play multiple positions (or rather, not showing that versatility) he's forced onto the half back line, where his class and poise under pressure are still valuable weapons when forced back here that he utilises to full effect. There's a bit of the Pendlebury's to Ryan, with his movement smooth but looking more so due to read of the game than athleticism. Barnett is 202cm and has played mainly ruck and forward, but at his height he's got sublime skills and athleticism that may see him turn into a successful Key Defender. Regardless, his ability to get around the ground and impact in all phases of the game is invaluable for a big man. Hagan is very much a 'performance' selection here, having made the WA U19s team and holding his own it's hard to deny that he's got more exposure than most, however I expect he may drop quickly next year =(

C: Elijah Tstatas (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), George Wardlaw (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), Oliver Hollands (Murray Bushrangers/ VIC C)

Arguably 3 of the best 4 mids heading into next year, all three of these guys have shown their capabilities as inside and outside players with genuine game sense. Elijah is an athletic beast with his acceleration around stoppages a massive weapon of his, paired with his damaging kick he looms as a genuine Pick 1 candidate early. Wardlaw is also in that same calibre of player, but a much stronger contested player with a real strength of his being his repeat efforts, inside consistency and the ability to stand up in tackles, and that's no joke, the RookieMe Central team were discussing last night and concluded we'd never seen Wardlaw brought to ground before disposing of the ball. Hollands is the brother of the SUNS' Elijah, with athleticism and class being key features of his game.

HF: Jack O'Sullivan (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC C), Will Elliott (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M), Harry Sheezel (Sandringham Dragons/ VIC M)

O'Sullivan is exactly the type of small player that I love, so early disclaimer that I may be overrating him all of 2022, but as a forward he's a pressure machine that knows how to use it going forward as well, there's not many tackles he goes for that he doesn't lay and when rotated through the midfield he's a contested ball magnet as well. Elliott is a super athletic tall, which is looking to be a theme next year, who can play ruck but looks much more at home as a forward, where he can impact well at ground level and aerially for his height. Sheezel is similar to Rachele from this years draft, but slightly taller and I think with a little stronger workrate, but a similar flair in the forward 50 and knack for doing miraculous things

FF: Elijah Hewett (Swan Districts/ WA), Harry Lemmey (West Adelaide/ SA), Mattaes Phillipou (WWT Eagles/ SA)

The premiere tall heading into next season, Lemmey is a lead up specialist with his arm span and ability to mark in front at full speed allowing him to beat most opponents with ease when given the space to lead into, with his follow up shot at goal super impressive for a junior, already having a well defined routine. Phillipou is a super athletic medium forward that runs through the midfield well, it's very much a speculative pick having him this high early on, but I think he's got a lot of similar traits to a guy like Calen Poulter. Hewett has done the majority of his damage as a big bodied inside ball winner for WA, but at club and PSA level has had some impressive stints up forward, and he still manages to hit the scoreboard when playing through the guts.

R: Jackson Broadbent (Peel Thunder/ WA), Will Ashcroft (Sandringham Dragons/ VIC M), Jhye Clark (Geelong Falcons/ VIC C)

Broadbent is undoubtedly a big prospect, and whilst he may not have the athleticism of other ruck options next year he already looks like a guy that could be considered a safe bet to make it as a number 1 ruck at the next level, early on he reminds me a bit of Jarrod Witts, but I feel Broadbent is more mobile. Ashcroft will be spoken about plenty as a top end father-son, but he does pretty much everything as a midfielder really well and frequently hits the scoreboard. Clark is a hard at it mid that is surprisingly clean with his disposal, even when being tackled or directly pressured he manages to hit targets by hand or foot

IN/C: Noah Long (Bendigo Pioneers/ VIC C), Kane Bevan (West Perth/ WA), Adam D'Aloia (WWT Eagles/ SA), Matthew Jeffersen (Oakleigh Chargers/ VIC M)

Long is a very similar player to Caleb Serong, just high workrate, ferocious and doesn't let his size stop him from having a crack and really troubling opposition players through the midfield. Bevan is a versatile prospect, and at 192 cm he could very well grow to KPP height but keep his strengths as a midfielder, especially his contested ball winning. D'Aloia has impressed everyone that's watched him, even getting a BOG medal in one of the SA U19's games, as well as the SANFL U18s Grand Final, a hard at it and hard working midfielder. Jeffersen is an exciting tall utility, with hisa best performances coming as a forward where his leading patterns and accuracy will impress many

PMBangers Academy notes (just some words on the more likely looking types);

Angus Curry (Oakleigh Chargers/ Wesley College), 174 cm, Midfielder; Short midfielder with plenty of ticker around the ground, doesn't let his size stop him getting dirty and trying to take down bigger opponents with his tackling.

#5 Angus Curry
The bottom-aged midfielder was a touch too classy for anyone else afield, as he looked convincingly the best ball user when he had ball in hand. He pin-pointed his kicks going forward and hit his handballs well with precision, at times not even turning his head to see his teammate, but putting it to the voice. Was in the right spots around stoppages from the second quarter onwards, where he’d win first possession consistently but sometimes failed to find a way out of the traffic and got caught for another ball up. Showing his game sense however, he adjusted how he approached stoppages as the game went on to start getting the ball out in a bit more space. Tackled well for a player of his size, where he caught a few off guard with his pace.

Angus Curry Currently boarding as Wesley College, Curry has had a few more chances to impress than a lot of other Northern Academy prospects for 2022; playing for Wesley, Oakleigh Chargers in the Under 17 series and the GWS Academy at different times. Curry doesn’t let his shorter stature hold him back, showing a lot of tenacity with his approach to contests and tackles, but also balancing that with quality ball use when he wins it.

Luke Lawrence, 183 cm, Midfielder/ Forward; Looks our top prospect early on with his marking and leap particularly eye catching from my viewings, good game sense and evasion skills through the midfield and up forward so is naturally one to watch

#14 Luke Lawrence
The bottom-aged forward target was the go-to man in the attacking half for GWS, with his leading patterns at a high level, he was often well placed inside 50 to follow up with a shot on goal when he held onto the marks – but did have some trouble with holding onto them at times. He worked hard without the ball as well, laying an impressive tackle in the third quarter where he ran 25 metres to lay it, rightfully being rewarded with the free kick. When he had the ball he generally used it well, not looking to do anything flashy, but always what was right for the team.

Luke Lawrence Looming as a dangerous midfielder that can rest forward in the future, Lawrence has made the most of his limited appearances in 2021 – including a three-goal haul in his only NAB League appearance. Mostly playing through the midfield through the academy series, Lawrence’s ability to get away from, or around, opponents with his speed and agility is eye catching, while his ability to find the right handball option in close most impressive.

(my notes from Sydney v GWS U17s Game 1); #11 Luke Lawrence: playing a bit in the midfield and finding the footy by being an option, really good turn on a dime to hit a target more central. Good bit of speed in a one-on-one foot race. Won ball in the corridor, picked it up, run into 50 pushing opponents hands off with some speed and then took a shot from 45, hitting the post. Excellent overhead contest mark, didn’t flinch at getting hit in the head, then turned on the spot and run off it right away handballing to a teammate after he drew in opponents. So evasive in traffic.

Harry Rowston, 178 cm, Midfielder/ Forward; Hard at it inside mid that also uses the ball pretty well from my viewings. He may be boarding in Victoria and playing for the Calder Cannons next year, but I haven't been able to get confirmation of whether it is him or another Harry Rowston 🤗

Harry Rowston is an in and under midfielder that can be damaging with his disposal, able to get through traffic and provide second efforts

(my notes from Sydney v GWS U17s Game 1); #5 GWS Giants - Harry Rowston (griffith boi): took a mark at back of centre square from kick in, kick long. positioning well around stoppages to get the taps. Worked well under pressure to get the ball out by foot to winger. Good tackle. Timed a run in to a stoppage well to win it off opposition ruckman, stood up in a tackle and kept the ball clear, then got his arm free and handed off. Good mark just out of 50, spotting up a teammate well deep inside 50. Nice penetrating long kick forward. Strong tackle on an opponent coming straight at him. Good lead and mark in the centre circle, then bulleted a kick inside 50.

Dayne Posthuma, 197 cm, Key Defender; Only seen him the once but looked really good as a possible Haynes style of tall defender imo, granted it was only against the Sydney Academy but he could be one that rises a bit from Champs, also comes from Queanbeyan like Fahey!

Dayne Posthuma Posthuma is a no fuss tall defender, remaining consistently accountable for his own opponent whilst drifting across and intercepting in front of contests to aid his teammates. The 197cm Queanbeyan product has a good leap and read of the ball, as well as a deceiving amount of speed, where he usually follows up with clean ball use.

(my notes from Sydney v GWS U17s Game 1); #28 Dayne Posthuma - KPD: ran ball out from kick in and got it 70 meters up the wing. Nice short kick after an opposition behind. Good contested intercept mark. Good spoil on a inside 45 kick that would’ve been an easy shot on goal. Great mark where he got up on an opponent ind defensive 50. Good speed and leap for a tall. Looks composed in congestion and applies solid pressure.

Nick Madden, 203 cm, Ruck; Pretty much a taller Briggs from when he was in juniors, looks a physically strong and well developed ruck that knows where to stand around the ground to take intercept marks

Nick Madden is a strong bodied ruck who is already 203cm and is strong one-on-one, providing headaches for opposition as he positions down the line to take intercept marks.

(my notes from Sydney v GWS U17s Game 1); #36 Nick Madden; Good intercept and contested marking, expected at his height, opposition ruck isn't giving him much of a challenge

Reckon we are any chance to take 2 or 3 of these boys, PMB?
Hard to tell so far out, especially when they haven't played against the traditional footy states, but I do really like Lawrence and Rowston for where our list is at, Madden is probably a shoe in if we end up losing Briggs or Flynn next year as well

Madden could be a Cat B pickup. 2022 should be Callum M Brown's last year as Cat B rookie, so provided Madden isn't advanced enough to attract a national draft bid, we could stick him away in cat B development for 3 years. Option is also there for a Cat A rookie selection if B is used otherwise.

Out of the guys on this list who would you feel comfortable in not bringing back? Kennedy I'd be fine with letting go, Fleeton, Bobby seems likely to leave, Wehr, Stein I'm not sure on he's fine as depth but anything more then that I wouldn't feel comfortable, Going to need to see Angwin play some games this year feel if he shows anything you probably look to bring him back as he's still so young, Shaw I'd be fine with letting go. All of Shaw, Wehr and Stein I'd be fine with letting go, we know what they are at this point, think it's important we take chances on some new guys for the rookie list and try and develop other players. Of course if we see breakout years for any of these guys (unlikely) then they should be kept around again if not elevated to the main list. I'd aim to treat these rookie list spots as lottery tickets and if a player hasn't shown much in their first couple years I think it's best to try someone else and take another flyer on someone new and if you can develop a guy enough to earn a main list spot then thats a win.

Kenners has been a great clubman and a solid grunt when he hasn't been injured. I wouldn't like to throw him away easily, but we do need to acknowledge his age, and if we keep the kids he might be in the sights to make list space. But I'm not yet of the view that he's washed up.

Cam Fleeton I think we need to see more of before we throw him away. Similarly, Wehr really hasn't had much of a chance, so hopefully VFL goes ahead next year and we can see if he's got anything to offer. IF he does come off the rookie list, Kenners unfortunately would be a candidate for a delist/rookie action.

Stein is cheap depth, so we'd need to replace him with similar. I expect Phil Davis is a big chance to retire, so there's a spot if he does and Stein would be more likely to stay. Lachie Keeffe is another who could retire, depending on how he bounces back from his injury given his age.

Cal Ward and Matt de Boer will be closing on 33 for the 2023 season, so one or the other (or both) could retire at the end of next year too.

Conversely, Callum Brown needs to come off the Cat B rookie list at the end of next year, so depending on how we see his future he could take a spot or leave a gap for someone else.

We'll see how things shape up during the season with the older players and others such as Bobby. First priority is to sign up some of the kids - TT, Cumming, Bruhn, Idun, XOH, Hill plus Callaghan and Aleer.

Kennedy I'd be fine with letting go,

what is it with people wanting to get rid of Kenners?

I swear… every year.

nobody ever has him in their Best 22 over in that thread - and every year, when not injured, he demonstrates that he is.

not yet 30

not old in footballing terms, and certainly not old in the modern game.

He's a fine player but ultimately he's going to be 30, he's not a major difference maker but he plays his role well. I'd be okay with bringing him back for another year or two but I'd also be comfortable with letting him go, I'm not rushing him out the door or anything but I'm certainly not doing everything I can to bring him back.

Happy for Kennedy to stay and you do need as many good clubman at your club as possible. But also as a free agent if a decent multi-year offer comes from another club such as a rebuilding club could see the club suggesting it might be better for him to take that offer given how much competition there is for that halfback position at the club and that his role is more as a depth player then best 22 at the giants.

All depends on their performance this year… but I could potentially see:
One of DeBoer and Wards contracts not being renewed (not sure if this is their last year or not). If we do renew we might end losing one of our young kids as a result.
Wehr doesn’t fit the bill for mine.
Kenners depends on his injuries… and his downfall is his kicking. You can’t play on a wing if you can’t kick. Love his effort though.
Not sure about Fleeton… has a lot of competition in front of him.
Hill could well leave at years end.

That means the following depart:
Ward/DeBoer
Wehr
Fleeton
Hill

It is the least scary off contract list in many a season.

Taranto will attract options but am confident he stays. Cumming I'd be shocked if he left.

XOH will be somewhat opportunity dependent, and I guess if he isnt getting a game, it is not the worse to leave.

Bruhn is the one I'd like to nail down. He looks like he could be anything. Hopefully we can re-sign.

Davis and Ward will be in the last or second last year I'd think.
