Yeah pretty funny stuff, it's like people over in Victoria have never seen Jake Kelly play

Kelly locking down Liam Ryan? Tough ask for him

Daniel Talia was absolutely a stalwart, and I wouldn't be against an argument that a Tom Lynch was either, considering the impact he had on our selections.

Mackay and Kelly are certainly being oversold in this regard.
Respect must be paid to those who played over 200 games. That's some pretty good service.

I reckon Hawthorn will finish last
They will be strategic about it too.

If there is an opportunity to lose any player to free agency and grab Pick 2 as compensation, they will do what ever it takes to get it.

Its been 6 years since their last flag after all. :drunk:

That list is a mess. They will be out of action for awhile.

Surely Kangaroos will finish last again? Going to be hard to beat since they jettisoned some experience and they didn't have much to start with.

Anyone agree with Jon Ralph's predicted 2022 Ladder?

18. Adelaide
The Crows are still only 39 games into a massive club-wide rebuild.

They won only three of their last 17 games after a Taylor Walker-inspired purple patch that saw him kick bags of five, six, six and three goals in a 3-1 first month for the Crows.

They must reintegrate Walker with all the challenges that come with that after his racist slur.

And despite the acquisition of Jordan Dawson, they have lost stalwarts including Jake Kelly, Daniel Talia, David Mackay and Tom Lynch.

Adelaide knows exactly where it is at – with the right coach, the right captain (Rory Sloane) the right list strategy, the patience to build methodically.

Early prediction: New acquisition Josh Rachele only takes weeks before fans wonder if they should name one of the Adelaide Oval forward pockets “Josh’s pocket”.

LOL
6. Essendon
Plenty of pre-season crystal balls will leave Essendon out of the top eight.

Consider this – of the nine games with a margin of 16 points or under, Essendon lost all but two, including nearly every nailbiter.

They lost by one point to Hawthorn, three and seven points to Sydney, two points to GWS, 11 points to Melbourne.

And still finished 11-11 before another Essendon-y type of finals performance, this time a 49-point loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The point is this: they are building something sustainable that still requires a key forward target.

But Ben Rutten’s ticks are culture, game plan, player buy-in, a stacked midfield and backline.

Flash in the pan? Not for me.

Prediction: Jake Kelly finishes top-five in the Essendon best-and-fairest as their lockdown specialist playing on all the dangerous smalls like Toby Greene and Liam Ryan.

Quiet Ralphy. Your club rebuilds with 35 year olds.

What’s Cunnington’s situation? Is he going to be available during the season at this point?

His presence will aid their young (although immensely talented) midfield brigade

Wouldn't surprise if they (and us) improve up the ladder - they got their man this year and wont have to fox it next year. Some put an asterisk against the last two FL seasons due to covid - I'd put an asterisk against the last two Crows and North seasons due to "rebuilding" ;)

I don't think it's a case of "they played 200 games, they're a stalwart", there needs to be a more lasting imprint on a side for my taste. In Talia you had that really until last year, where he was the person our defense was built around. Lynch you had a player who was at the forefront of our 2016-18 four key talls strategy, as Lynch was really the piece that made it possible for us to have McGovern as a more traditional third tall. As much as we stuck with the role of psudeo-winger far longer than we should have. Both do deserve it in my eyes as both had a genuine impact on Adelaides fortunes in the last 10 years.

With Mackay, I don't think you can genuinely argue he had that impact. He was just there and really he got lucky to have a career far greater than his ability should have allowed.

They have endured a successful rebuild back in the 00s.

They know what they need to do.

As I said, if they get pick 1, they will make sure they engineer a way to get Pick 2 via compensation for Free Agency if its an option.

I would back them to get another flag, well before a few other teams.

Jake Kelly in the top 5 would mean Essendon having a very poor season. Im starting to think the Vics haven't actually seen him play.

And Bayley Fritsch

Are they confusing him with Doedee or Luke Brown?

I've heard him described as everything between a tall key position defender to a lockdown that can play on smalls

I was pretty surprised when an Essendon fan at work was pretty gun-ho about Kelly's signing and I think he was expecting me to be disappointed / concerned about Crows not being able to hold quality players - Thought he knew his footy better than that

seems a well argued, reasonable bit of analysis.

of course we don’t like it but it’s not like any of us knows

Them, Collingwood or (as a smoky) Carlton are really the three teams I'm struggling to go past coming into this season for bottom place. Hawks/Collingwood have crises brewing in the background (Mitchell, and De Goey), and I don't know if I like the prospects of a team as inundated with problems like Carlton with a failed coach at the helm.

Jeez Essendon must be worse than I thought!

Not sure they have anybody worth a first rounder, but I agree they would they could. Is Mitchell OOC next year?
