Leon Baker.

centre/inside mid and half forward

183cm, 85k

Premiership quality half forward and centreman in 4 premierships played at WAFL and VFL level. Was runner up in Essendon's best and fairest in 1984 and 1985.

Not a player I know a stack about, as he was before my time, but he strikes me as a modern inside mid with a real touch of class, possibly in the mould of Robbie Gray (perhaps not as dynamic forward but more of a true inside mid in the modern parlance).

If his records and feats as a player are anything to go by it is splitting his time between the WAFL and VFL that is likely the only thing that prevents him from being in the conversation for the greats of Essendon list.

Great player...was hoping he would sneak through to my next pick. Got things going at the start of the last qtr in ‘84 and his blind turn out of the pack to put us in front is still one of my fabourite memories of that game.

We haven't seen the high point but how many players are actually better than 2017 Joe? I wouldn't have thought there are many.

I thought he would fall because people have fallen out of love with him.
i’ve fallen out of love with him, but man that 2017 was a wild ride!

And they choose from the best of the rest at the very end?
They can take their pick when they're next on. And we don't wait another 8 hours for them.

Ie. I miss, Eth picks Slattery and John Williams, Jmoo can pick etc. Then next time I come on I can make up the picks I miss but I can only take players still available.

This is a fantastic pick.

Leon played forward in the 84 finals series, kicked 6 in the prelim & 4 in the GF including the two electric goals in the last quarter.

The main thing that robbed not just us, but the footy world in general, is that Leon didn't think he was mature enough for VFL as a 17/18 year old & went travelling for years instead, playing footy in various towns along the way. He was on his way to Darwin, but got caught up in floods, so turned around & ended up at Swan Districts, and showed what he could do at that level. Two years later, he was at Windy Hill.

Was zoned to Melbourne FC....

Pick 5 - Timmy Watson

View attachment 1289048

307 games
335 goals
3 x Premiership player
4 x B&F winner including a premiership year (85)
Essendon Team of the Century (Ruck Rover)
VFLPA MVP 1989 (Leigh Mathews Trophy)
Captain 1989-91
Debuted at just 15years & 305 days (4th youngest ever debut)

For those too young to have seen him he was the reason kids wanted to wear the No.32 on our jumpers/duffle coats in the 1980s.
Explosive pace, kicked goals, and just like his son he was a fan favourite.

BrunoV

Could have won the Brownlow in 1980 as an 18/19 year old, and was flat out robbed of it in 1989.

You need to tag the next person who, in this case, is boncer34, the OP.

This really is a cruel game. Your next pick is seemingly so close then BANG, some campaigner takes them. Hutchison, Blethyn, Moss and Baker were all very high on my list.

Edit: probably high on most lists if I'm honest with myself

Baker and Blethyn were 2 I was hoping I'd still be able to pick.
