Back in the day one would call out revolutionaries at uni for accepting government scholarships, and any handouts from the man they were trying to overthrow for that matter. They'd always have a justification. They were clever folk those young marxists with their twisted dialectic which could justify anything.
In the spirit of Xmas, is it hypocritical for Christians to be celebrating the pagan Saturnalia, on the anniversary of the day Jesus was not born, or is it hypocrisy for atheists to be celebrating Xmas?

Let's hear some good excuses.

Atheist here who celebrates Christmas. I love kids getting presents (as I mentioned in another thread, getting all of those killer toys in the 70s/80s such as Kenner Star Wars figures, Lego Space, etc was awesome) so I try and recreate the magic I experienced with the next generation of kids in my family. I think it's nice to have a day to think of others (now that I'm older, the giving aspect means a lot more) and I donate to charity and make up toy packs to give out to kids who are less fortunate than I was. And it's great to catch up with family.

If Christians want to celebrate the birthday of Jesus, then I'm cool with that. It doesn't affect how I celebrate Christmas just as the way I celebrate Christmas doesn't affect their religious celebration.

Atheists celebrate Xmas cos it isn’t a religious holiday for them. It’s a holiday about family and presents, Santa for the kid’s and a feast.

marxists accepting support from government isnt hypocrisy. That’s what Marxism is. Accepting support from government who they want to control everything.

and for christians Xmas is a Christian holiday so not hypocrisy for them either.

there’s so many hypocritical views at the moment you have done well to pick three things that aren’t hypocritical at all as your selections to discuss.

Socialists would accept government scholarships. The Revolution was to overthrow the current government to replace it with a socialist one.

An example of hypocrisy would be right wing LNP decrying “socialism” and “handouts” and say they are the party of the “free market”, but then provide us with such things as the baby bonus, private healthcare subsidies, fossil fuel subsidies, religion and Murdoch media subsidies, negative gearing, franking credits

I think Christmas in 2021 Australia can be considered a secular holiday. The religious element is shrinking day by day (ScoMo still
forced the ABC to broadcast a message from old mate Brian Houston however)

If you want to confuse a Christian just ask them how could Jesus have been born on December 25th in an empty stable with shepards in the fields tending to flocks when it would have been too cold that time of year for the flocks to have been out of the stable. Or similarly why Joseph and Mary travelled to Bethlehem for a census in December when it would have been too cold and wet to travel.
