Dune - always love when an auteurist film gets the big budget that is generally only afforded to soulless corporate made-by-committee superhero movies. Villeneuve's scope is epic, and he clearly has learned some lessons from the David Lean School of Epic Filmmaking. A visual and sonic feast, and with a far more impressive cast than such films are usually afforded. Can't wait to see what they do with the sequel.

A Boy named Christmas
I read the book many years ago and really loved it I think this movie is true to the book which I actually like for my movies took the kids to see it and my 8 year old really enjoyed

I never watched this series but I watched it my 13 year old son as he’s seen the Previous 2 movies can I say as someone who hasn’t seen either of the first 2 movies I really loved it and wasn’t lost in the plot as apparently this is a Prequel

Red Rocket

Simon Rex (who I didn't realise was still a thing) plays a conman/washed up pr0n star, who returns to his home town in Texas.

It's got a bit of award buzz and I can KINDA see why. It has pieces that are interesting, and its use of "Bye Bye Bye" is one of the most interesting uses of music I've seen in film for a while.

A dark comedy directed by Sean Baker, who also made The Florida Project.

It's also a bit of a bleak insight into low socio-economic people in America's South.

Clerks (1994)

The archetypal low-budget 90s cult classic. Was a teenager when I first saw this and thought it was pretty cool at the time, and whilst it IS very much of its time (long sequences of dialog, observational humour, self-sabotaging 'slacker' culture, with a bit of homophobic humour for good measure) it still stands up as pretty engaging viewing.

Cost only about $25K to make, it made about 3 mil and launched Kevin Smith's career. Would be interested to see if it can connect with a younger audience now (who might be more used to shorter scenes, faster editing and more brevity in communication), but I'd recommend it if for no other reason than to get a feel for time.

4 out of five stars.

I was one of the few people that saw that at the cinema, it was a big box office flop but it didn't deserve to be, good film.

Covid probably didn't help it, not many people are going to the cinema these days apart from going to see the usual brainless superhero blockbusters.
 
Pandora (2016) Korean movie about a nuclear plant explosion. Not bad but Koreans sure do cry a lot.

I wanted to see it, but it came out when they just dumped four months' worth of movies all at once, and didn't get to it in time.

I get close to catching up and then have to isolate for a week or so and the list blows out again.

I want to see House of Gucci, I'm a fan of Adam Driver and like The Last Duel it is directed by Ridley Scott, with those two involved it should be good.

Adam Driver would be the hottest movie star in Hollywood right now and he would have the pick of the scripts, if he's in a movie it should be good.

I used to watch 3 films a week at the cinema (it helped being a projectionist and getting free films) but I’ve had to pick my films more so than I used to and yeah, covid didn’t help things. The missus isn’t the biggest movie buff too so that has seen me watch less at the cinemas.
 
Licorice Pizza

Something about PTA's style I just dig. Because they are written and directed by him, I find they are often a very pure and original vision. He is straight up just having fun with this one. It's funny, silly, there are some scenes which seem a bit unnecessary - but it is held together by a fairly straight forward comedy-drama / romance style plot. It could end up being one of his more coherent and accessible movies, along with Boogie Nights.

It's also really cool that he pivoted from his usual approach of using big stars for the leads (your Daniel Day Lewis's etc) and gave them to two unheard-of young actors that he is close to in his personal life. The fact that the male lead is 15 year old son of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's who PTA took under his wing when his dad died is a wholesome story. The lead girl I'm pretty sure was also her first movie and probably stole the show with a great performance.

House of Gucci

Expected a lot more for a Ridley Scott movie. Was very slow at first, took a while to get going. 2 and a half hours and you think they skipped over a lot of detail in the second half of the film. Acting was ok, nothing outstanding. I think a lot of the actors were miscast. I just couldn’t get behind Adam Driver being cast as Maurizio Gucci.
Cigarette companies will also love the free advertising on this film.

Probably wouldn’t watch again.

Just read Jared Leto was in it. Still can’t believe that was him.

Man, it's my movie of 2021. I love when a movie sticks with you, and 6 days later I still am thinking about it randomly. I can't wait to rewatch and I hope I can find a download soon. So many good things about it. It is fun a lot of ways but I love the higher meaning of
younger character wanting to be mature, older. and the older character wanting her youth, adolescence and innocence back
. Just so damn good. Love how the two leads were pretty average looking too lol, gives it a bit of reality. Just loved it.

Good recommendation :thumbsu:.

I loved The Florida Project and I loved this too. Sean Baker writes interesting scripts about low socioeconomic status Americans then gets good performances from non-professional and inexperienced actors.

I was in two minds about the
huge highway vehicle crash. It was a bit out of kilter with the rest of the movie. But it served to show what a shitty person Mikey was. He didn't care about all the victims and was positively celebrating his friend taking all the blame for it. Just being picky, but I think a smaller, more personal incident would have done the same job and had more emotional impact

What did you make of the ending?

Playing the song backwards reflected that he had gone full circle and was back to where he was at the start of the movie. Or maybe Bye Bye Bye backwards and Strawberry shown as his fantasy pr0n star represents a new beginning for him (until he *s up again).
