The same with gws full orange yoke and back compared to the swans full red yoke and back. Therefore gws had to invent the never surrender top to wear in these games to avoid a clash.
Bizarrely neither NSW teams use baby blue or blue in general despite the traditional state colours

Both are Sydney teams, no need for state colours.

Sydney colours are blue, gold & white
Yeah but to be fair Brisbane's official colours are blue and gold too, the state colour of maroon is used in one at least one team (the blue and gold are also both in the Brisbane colours).

I played Ammos in the 80s

Sydney University are Gold & Blue hoops, they played in the NEAFL when it was going.
City of Sydney flag is Gold, Blue and the flags of Viscount Sydney, a mix of the Navy and Captain Cook, and the third is the first Lord Mayor of Sydney

Traditionally Sydney rep kits have been blue and gold, taking inspiration from the city flag.
Funnily enough when the Broncos were being conceived, they initially wanted to go Blue and Gold for the city colours, but thought it would be too much like the Sydney teams so went maroon instead

Hmm. I once heard a related story about the Bears - that they wanted to claim blue and gold as their colours in 1986 but West Coast beat them to lodging the paperwork with the VFL, so they too went to "maroon" and gold.

I guess it is a similar story for both codes. Also interesting to learn the Broncos are actually named for Denver

Initially, the founders of the club favored the official blue and gold colours of Brisbane City Council. However, Sydney advertiser John Singleton advised the board that "Queenslanders had been booing players wearing blue for more than three-quarters of a century."As a result, the traditional maroon and white colours of Queensland along with gold, symbolizing the Queensland sunshine, were adopted as the club's colours.

NSWRL had started focusing on marketing in the late 70s and early 80s - they brought in the Raiders and Steelers in 1982 and the Giants, Knights and Broncos in 1988. Apart from the Knights, all of those nicknames were (relatively) successful American franchises. The Knights were a play on "men of steel" seeing as there was a steel industry around the Hunter.

Might explain the Chargers/Gladiators name for the now defunct GC teams too

Gladiators was the big TV show but the bloke who wanted that name wasn't allowed to hold the licence so the league took them over and picked the Chargers. Funnily enough, a few years later, the NFL put on a game at Stadium Australia featuring the Broncos playing, you guessed it, the Chargers.

Fun fact; Vulcan (my favourite Gladiator) is a henchman in the James Bond film The World is not Enough
