I think Hameed is crap but considering they let him battle on for 4 Tests surely they could have let him play the 5th.

Nah, it's time to drop Hameed. He had three tests in a row where all you could really say about him is that he's out of his depth.

May as well give Crawley and Burns a shot, especially as the game is all about what can be salvaged.

Wouldn’t it be better to give Pope another go? He’s the future

May as well, but I don't think Pope is an opener.

At least let him be 29-30 before he's given the Khawaja treatment.

Why did England even bring Lawrence out here? They haven't made 300 at all and he's been twiddling his thumbs on the sidelines for all 5 tests. Instead they go back to Burns, who's papers should be stamped.

Isn’t Lawrence a middle order bat? They have already brought Pope back in.

Bats at 3 for his county. Open with Malan and play Lawrence at 3.

At the moment only two English players in the XI and only by default really. Bairstow as keeper unless Carey can make some runs and Root at 4 depending on how he goes in this test vs Smith. Massive gulf in the sides

1. Warner 273 @ 39
2. Khawaja 244 @122
3. Marnus 330 @ 47
4. Root 277 @ 34 / 5 @ 46
5. Head 349 @ 69
6. Green 201 @ 40 / 9 @ 15
7. Bairstow 194 @ 49 (wk)
8. Starc 151 @ 75 / 15 @ 26
9. Cummins 57 @ 19 / 14 @ 20 (c)
10. Lyon 41 @ 20 / 16 @ 23
11. Boland 6 @ 6 / 14 @ 8

Next batsmen - Smith 217 @ 31 / Harris 179 @ 29 / Stokes 227 @ 28
Next bowler - Robinson 11 @ 23 / Anderson 8 @ 23

Bairstow hasn’t even kept. Buttler at least has a few decent innings

He hasn't but he has regularly at international level and averages more whilst keeping than when not keeping, so no reason not to pick him as the keeper. Buttler only had one knock and been very ordinary with the gloves, same with Carey

Na can’t agree has to have kept this series otherwise it’s ridiculous.

So you put a bloke at opener who averages 6 as an opening batsman?

Carey's been streets ahead of Buttler.

Buttler had one shocker of a Test but I'm pretty sure overall he's missed less chances and he did bat out a couple of sessions and really showed some grit. He's been better with the bat then Carey though that's a pretty low bar.

Carey 134 @ 16 (best 51) 18 catches (I believe four missed but could be wrong)
Buttler 107 @ 15 (best 39) 12 catches (I believe three missed but could be wrong)

Neither been impressive, Butler's best (blinder off Harris, gritty knock to try save a draw) ahead of Carey's best but his worst has also been worse that Carey's worst. Neither been good though, so would pick Bairstow in my side to date. Only an opinion of course.

Same logic as picking Bairstow, he can open and would pick him in this side as the opener on the basis that I wouldn't pick any of the others. Not exactly been easy going for top order batsmen so shoehorning in someone who has made some runs. If not Khawaja, Harris would be the pick

Harris 179 @ 29
Crawley 130 @ 26
Hameed 80 @ 10
Burns 51 @ 10

Malan 226 @ 28
