Byron bay is overun with hippies and hippies kids. Maybe a couple of streets in byron bay town itself with sea views have had rich people move in but outside that its probably the most left wing shire in australia. These people are still stuck in the sixties.

its also the anti vaxer capital of australia even before covid was a thing.

we have a beach house about 20 mins from byron and my partner, who is a consultant doctor in brisbane, was so concerned about regular outbreaks such as whooping cough down there that when our kids were babies she refused to let us go down there. Its that big a concern.
Hippie and wellness types are not "leftwing". They are some of the most reactionary voices in the public space. And the Hippie fringe right alliance isn't even a new, Qanon phenomena, see various cults and groups that adopted Nazi iconography and occult beliefs throughout the 60s and 70s. Socialists are materialists and have always had a strong dislike for the crunchy set.

For a historical example, see the process church or Manson family, for a recent example see cranks like Pete Evans, or the wellness to Qanon pipeline.

The hippie movement is one firmly rooted in capitalism, it's just one with different preferences for consumption.

The left wing/right wing binary divide is just lazy and simplistic dumb arsed thinking in any case IMHO.
Absolutely.

It's like when people conflate US liberals with socialism.

******* no, liberalism was a coevolutionary political and moral philosophy that arose during the shift from merchantilism to a liberal internationalist vision of capitalism.

Socialism is explicitly anti-capitalist. And in fact, before the devolution of capital after the bourgeois revolutions of Europe began, the idealism of Adam Smith and then the dialiectic materialism of Marx who was an admirer and critic of Snith share more similarities than Smith's later vision did with todays libs (neoliberals). Who really have picked up where that ugly, predatory, post Smith vision of unrestrained international capital kicked off.

Some are, some aren’t.
Correct. I am very much influenced by the "hippie" movement of the sixties because older friends of the family and older brothers and sisters of my friends were immersed in that culture. The aspects that really stuck with me were those that mother earth needs to be respected and nurtured, everyone but everyone is equal, make love not war.

I cannot remember any resistance to vaccines and medicines, geez, "medicines" played a huge part in hippiedom but as the Skyhooks sang, "Whatever happened to the revolution? We all got stoned and it drifted away".

The hippies of that era were left wing, no question. The so called hippies nowadays, that is the Byron Bay, Adelaide Hills, Macedon Ranges types aren't really hippies at all because they view left wing politics and scientific advancement as enslavement. The are pretentious, self obsessed, illogical fools who have become the "establishment" of so called alternative thinking and ways of doing things.

Hell without modern medicine all those hippies would have succumbed to various STD's.

Cirsten Weldon died of Covid. She was dead against the vaccination and suffered greatly because of it. A conspiracy borne out of QAnon has its members increasingly viewing vaccination as part of a diabolical plot by the “deep state” to enslave humanity.

Christmas before last, a pharmacist attempted to destroy more than 500 doses of Moderna vaccine, because QAnon had told him the drug would “alter the recipient’s DNA.”

Veronica Wolski an outspoken anti-vaxxer whose life was governed by QAnon fantasy, died of Covid after cult members spent weeks trying to bully the hospital into giving her the unproven drug ivermectin.

Another who wrote on Instagram, “The smartest virus ever… It doesn’t affect those who don’t believe in it,” died only a few weeks later.

Doug Kuzma, another QAnon full-blown anti-vaxxer died from complications due to COVID-19.

Radio hosts, Bob Enyart, Phil Valentine, Marc Bernier and Dick Farrel, including conspiracy theorist Robert David Steele who boasted of being the first person to call the pandemic a hoax, GOP leader Pressley Stutts, and anti-vaxxer activist Caleb Wallace, all used their platforms to promote bullshit about the virus, masks and the vaccines, and all were seriously kicked into the next universe shortly after. They’re all dead.

And now, Weldon, who said that Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, “needs to be hung from a rope”, is also dead.

As a last tribute to her, some of Weldon's QAnon members threatened a violent retaliation against the hospital staff who treated her. One idiot, Scott McKay, who is known as “Patriot Streetfighter” online, said the medical staff should be sentenced to death by military tribunal, lest they be killed in the street by vigilantes.

“If it’s not done in a military tribunal then it’s going to be done in the street eventually and not to my wishes,” McKay wrote. “That’s my greatest fear. But if it’s necessary, it’s going to be necessary.”

And frankly, by their own beliefs, they’re cleaning up this dangerous cult of desperately confused adults themselves. These people who are refusing to take the medication in favour of fantasy, well, that has just become my favourite form of natural selection. Let it be

No issues here.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. And the average IQ of the population has risen as a result.

Someone should tell the hippies they arent left wing. They keep voting for the greens in mass numbers. Unless of course you dont believe the greens are left wing either?

picking up single examples doesnt make a point. Look at the bulk of the group.

Joe Rogan is a complete fkwit.

It's sad he has such a following. The guy is dangerous.

Arthur scargill once said ‘labour shouldn’t be in the business of running capitalism better than the capitalists’

but indeed there are many many labour voters who see it that way, but also don’t like third way Murdoch ass kissers like Blair either

There is currently an approx. 5.4-fold or 440% greater risk of being hospitalized from COVID if you haven't been vaccinated, than if you have (in Victoria).

The laggards really should consider vaccination, and the UAP/state LNP has a lot to answer for.

Unfortunately you can’t teach mugs mate.
