That argument would have held weight 5 years ago, but considering all of the LBs in this years' All Pro lists are off-ball linebackers, it doesn't quite any more

Parsons and Lenard are both OLB. Campbell is the only true ILB in the first team all pro.

I think the point is Parsons and Leonard are more traditional (for lack of better word) LBers, where a few years ago the LB position was filled with pure pass-rushing 34 OLBs, and the Parsons/Leonard/Campbell types were getting ****ed over during that time.

You were arguing they should decide between WRs on the basis of complementary roster building. Now you just want to argue positional importance?

Not all roles are of equal importance in the NFL, so what? No one is paying a purely blocking TE top market money, why do you think that is?

Now interchangeable LBs who can rush the passer and hold up in pass coverage....all the same kind of 6'0" to 6'2" and 220-230 lbs, that can lineup Will, Mike, Sam, or Edge.

Likewise how now it's not even 3-4 or 4-3 anymore, but just Techniques.

When Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts take the field on Sunday, they will have the largest age difference ever between starting quarterbacks in an NFL postseason game.

Brady turned 44 on August 3 and Hurts turned 23 on August 7, so the age difference between them is almost exactly 21 years. That’s by far the biggest age difference ever between playoff quarterbacks.

The previous record was set by Brady and Patrick Mahomes, who is 18 years younger than Brady. The Brady-Mahomes matchup has happened twice in the postseason, in the Super Bowl last year and the AFC Championship Game three years ago.

The record for the largest age difference between regular-season starting quarterbacks was set two weeks ago, when Brady and the Buccaneers faced Zach Wilson and the Jets. Wilson was born on Brady’s 22nd birthday. The second-largest age gap between starting quarterbacks in the regular season was set this year by Brady and Justin Fields, the third-largest is Brady and Mac Jones and the fourth-largest is Brady and Hurts.

Every position plays differently to how it used to, and more nuanced. Teams often don't have the same demarcation between free and strong safeties. Quarterbacks play the position differently than the old statues etc etc etc.

Why only recognise only historical divides- if we're to now apparently specially recognise with all pro status blocking tight ends, or scat backs why not running quarterbacks? We'll give Hurts a gong. Sure, no one would reasonably argue he's amongst the league best at his position, but if we create enough labels we'll get there.

Incidentally, I do think over time there's some possibility that this will be to some degree cyclical.

If teams continue to trend towards smaller nickel defences with undersized line backers, I wonder whether more teams (especially those without all pro QBs) will start to adopt the approach that the Eagles did this year and start unleashing a large agile o-line and running game on them. Will that, in turn, lead to teams starting to grunt up again defensively?

Rule changes mean that passing will likely always be more efficient, but clock control will have a place.

I'm not arguing about the All-Pro thing, no dog in that fight either. Just bemoaning how the game has changed that positions start changing and becoming obsolete

That is possible and thus the return of the Fullback too. Not just as a blocker but as RB2 like he often used to be, the predominance of the Split Back formation, etc.

The only hitch tho is the College game would have to change too, in order for those positions to be repopulated again, the skills of the position taught and kept alive.
