News Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread IV

Nah cant do it. When this guy “threw the kitchen sink” at covid, that should be enough for people to take a free vaccine.
I also thought it was just the flu and their immune system could handle it so why did he need to “throw the kitchen sink” at Covid🙄

How defensive was he. As soon as he was proved wrong he started Strawmaning the s**t out of it. Rogan is the biggest arse hat of our time. Ive watched and listened to hundreds of hours of his s**t. The ONLY thing I have agreed with his point of view. In 500 years time, this age will be known as the “selfish” age. How we can abuse humanity the way we have and allowed poverty to grow as much as it has is etched in History.

We are the campaigner age

It is hard for people to let go of a position they have come to once it becomes an ideology. Joe should have always been prepared to be wrong about his belief when the source of his information was a study that hadn't been peer reviewed, and which had some major misgiving about the method that achieved the conclusion.

The danger is that science and medicine has become political and people are not applying basic critical thinking to the science. It is a concern not just about anti-vaxxers but there is now a much larger and far more politically influential movement that is as unhinged and illogical when it comes to science.

We live in an age were the belief in the scientific method is being eroded and people in power believe it is okay to spread misinformation that could be harmful or lethal for the greater good. Is there a way back because I think the psychological trauma inflicted on Australian overall is going to end up worse than covid itself.

Nothing like a bit of profiteering that the government of the day turns a blind eye to.

It's just a crazy situation.

We have a tool that is part of our response to controlling the pandemic and that allows us to move to the next phase and takes pressure off the health system which is then left to market forces to manage because our government couldn't be bothered. This is after they couldn't be bothered listening to the advice of experts late last year telling them to purchase as many as they could so that we could be prepared for this inevitability.

As a consequence they are so rare that the nearest source for those in Melbourne's south and east is in Hawthorn (so maybe 2.5 million people with absolutely no access in Melbourne alone) and some of those that are available are being sold at exorbitant prices. What a shock.

The country is in a metaphorical war, and has been for the last 2+ years.

Now imagine if companies were allowed to be profiteers during an actual war. We wouldn't allow it to occur. Instead here, we 'investigate', yet do nothing to stop them.

So they get fined, but have *ed the ability of the community to recover and move on. It is just so goddamn reactive.

This goes back to the turn of the century and the Heartland Institute trying to undermine the acceptance of the need to act on climate change.

The moment you monetise the undermining of science you've opened the door...

Climate or eco-system denial is rooted in greed, people tend to look the other way due to bribes and kickbacks, it is sad, but there are logical reasons why it happens. There is something different going on and logical or the scientific method is only a truth when it is convenient or tells a narrative of what "our side" wants to believe, it has become ideological.

It becomes "them" vs "us" and it is dangerous for society because science, by it's nature, needs to constantly be questioned because what we understand to be truth is the current sum of our knowledge and the only time we should really have consensus on anything scientifically related is when it is no longer relevant to us, because we have moved a long way past where that accumulation of knowledge exists.

The current environment of being hostile to question anything is extremely dangerous and empowers group think and manipulation for control. That is a very slippery slope as there will be temptation to abuse that kind of power. But, people shouldn't abuse the scientific method to peddle bullshit either, that needs to be called out too.

Its facilitated by the politicisation of science. Its a form of identity politics now. Once upon a time Thatcher promoted action on global warming. Bill *en Heffernan went on tv and said "well on my farm things are changing" decades ago. Now you can predict who someone votes for by their opinion on climate change. Alot of money was pumped into sowing doubt. Have you ever seen that movie about the Global Warming Swindle? Its a crock. But alot of money went into it and John Laws, who has a huge audience said it seemed legit. Obviously a moron. But he's got a huge audience and says s**t for money.

This is exactly what happened with climate change. And tobacco. And probably both sides of the nuclear debate.
