'Crypto isnt even worth anything its just a scam'... meanwhile these ppl walking around tapping their phones and smartwatches on an eftpos machine to buy their coffees cuz thats worth something? If you can pay for things and get rich doing it what does it matter?

Currency and cash is about percieved value, the actual dollar bills and coins arent worth peanuts. All that matters is the number in your bank account and crypto is a great way of adding digits to it.

Very much this.

Crypto is in large lots of electronic ledgers no different to the electronic ledgers banks already use in our ever increasing cashless society which has been accelerated thanks to the pandemic.

The difference is crypto is about taking away some of the hold these major corporations have over sectors and decentralising some of that power they wield.

I'm not anti crypto but wasnt Bitcoin supposed to be anywhere from 100k-250k at the end of 2021?
Depends who you listen too, I didn’t think it would but with the way it’s being adopted I would be surprised if it’s not at $100k sometime this year

To all the crypto people here,

I sincerely hope that you realise how much of a scam this is before you lose all your money.

Look up Tulip futures as an idea, maybe the South Sea bubble or Argentinean bonds.

This is not new, it is an old financial story that ends the same way.

On SM-A515F using BigFooty.com mobile app

Best you do some research. Block chain technology is still in its infancy yet is being adopted more and more each day. So many use cases.

There are scams everywhere. When I lose my money to a Nigerian prince I don't blame email.

and how many companies accept it? Can I go to the local supermarket and buy my shopping with it? Can I go to a Mercedes dealer and buy a car with it?
I use crypto for sports betting . I don’t specifically use it for any other form but international betting especially in Australia could take off in the current and future. For Australian regulators, it would be very difficult to stop and keep up with the gambling operators through crypto (in comparison to bookmakers based in Australia )

I have also heard of people getting around the gambling laws around Australia and betting on casino games via crypto.

It does, but you realise alternative currencies have existed for centuries? Fiat has outlived them all.
There are two websites for sports betting that I use : except.io and Sportsbet.io.

Sportsbet.io has no relation to Sportsbet.com.au but they offer markets on AFLW that I bet on before.

The Afl would sell their grandmother's forehead for revenue.
Where does it stop? Dodgy sponsors and every square inch covered in crap.
This is somewhat true, but I tell you what - I was walking down the street the other day when I saw a rotund figure in a League jersey with 'OAK' plastered across his guts. Not being a real avid RL follower it took me a second or two to then see that it was indeed Penrith this man barracked for.

I am glad that the AFL haven't whored out significant real estate on the front of the guernseys yet. I live in apprehension that the day will come though.

Is it any different from gambling sponsorship?
Yes. Ethically I've got no problem with sponsorship from the tech of the future. Good crypto projects solve a lot of problems.

Gambling sponsorship and ads is a blight on professional sport.

Crypto not unethical?

  • Excessive carbon footprint.
  • Enabling ransomware, arms trafficking and sale of child abuse material.

No you missed the part on good crypto projects, some which aim to be carbon negative for example with offsets.

The technology itself is dependant on the project or user. It's like saying a car is unethical because you can use it to transport drugs and it enables XYZ behaviour. It's flawed thinking.

Technology with plenty of problem solving applications, smart contracts, speedy transaction processing, thats not remotely the same as gambling ads.

If you can't see the obvious difference I can't help you.

There's obvious differences and crypto, particularly the technology, has many good applications, some of which probably yet to be known. But the murky ethics of it have not been played out much in the public discourse.

Your car analogy is flawed thinking. Tracing the money is a massive tool in crime fighting. Just as you know, identifying cars used in crimes (news reports often say to look out for a white commodore with damage to the front left etc etc, or even using the licence plates) is.

There's good and bad with it.

The internet also enables things like cyber crime and more. It's not in itself unethical, it's the people who do unethical things.

Think about it like this, a crypto sponsorship is not going to be plugging adds that children see promoting weapons trafficking using crypto coins.

Yet every single game kids get to see Browny promoting how about putting $20 on this to double your money.

I'm a punter myself, I punt daily, but it should have no place as part of the sponsorship or broadcast or coverage.

Tim Costello says Afl is corrupting the sport.

we've banned advertising of alcohol and smokes. So they turn to non stop gambling ads and now crypto.

it not only says a lot about the AFL but it also highlights where crypto sits.......alongside gambling, smoke companies and alcohol manufacturers
