Injury update: Who's in your club's medical room
Sarah Black

RICHMOND ruck recruit Poppy Kelly will miss at least the next few weeks after suffering a "medium-term" knee injury against St Kilda.

She won't be the only Tiger sidelined, with Sophie Molan (leg) and Emelia Yassir (concussion) also out of action with short-term injuries.

Akec Makur Chuot had revealed on her Instagram account she had tested positive to COVID-19, but is expected to be in the mix for selection if her health allows.

Former No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie remains as a "medium-term" proposition with her calf injury.

Coach Ryan Ferguson said the last few weeks had been promising, but there was still some way to go.

"Making some progress in recent times, which is great. Still hard to get a read on exactly when she might be ready," he said.

"We are hopeful that she'll get some good footy this year, but we'll just wait and see."

Melbourne has a host of players now available after missing last week due to AFL health and safety protocols: Eliza McNamara, Sinead Goldrick, Lauren Magee and Gabby Colvin.

First-year pair Tahlia Gillard and Maeve Chaplin will sit this week out due to the protocols, while a timeline of 4-6 weeks has been put on recruit Liv Purcell's return from a torn ACL.

'Absolutely devastated': Key Tiger confirms ACL tear

RICHMOND key defender Harriet Cordner has confirmed she tore the ACL in her right knee during Saturday night's loss to Fremantle.

Cordner was helped off the Swinburne Centre following the innocuous second-quarter incident.

With Cordner in clear pain on the deck and her teammates looking on in some distress, the game stopped for a handful of minutes while Richmond trainers helped the former Demon off the ground.

Cordner took to social media to say she was "absolutely devastated" after scans confirmed the worst.

McClelland to miss Suns clash

Richmond utility Laura McClelland has accepted a one-match suspension.

Richmond's Laura McClelland will miss this weekend's clash against Gold Coast through suspension after accepting a one-match ban.
McClelland was charged with Kneeing Fremantle's Ebony Antonio, during the third quarter of the Round Three match between Richmond and the Dockers, played at Swinburne Centre Punt Road Oval on Saturday.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Careless Conduct, Medium Impact and Groin Contact. The incident was classified as a one-match sanction as a first offence.
McClelland, 20, has made a solid start to the season for Richmond playing mainly in defence.

Injury wrap

Talented Gold Coast midfielder Jacqui Yorston is closing in on her long-awaited return from a torn ACL, and is a test for this week.

Tori Groves-Little provided a much-needed spark in Gold Coast's breakthrough win, but they suffered a concussion at training and will miss at least round four, while Claudia Whitfort is available after her round two concussion.

The key position stocks of Richmond have been hit hard, with Harriet Cordner earlier this week ruled out for the season with a torn ACL.

Tall forward Courtney Wakefield (shoulder), ruck Poppy Kelly (knee) and star midfielder Ellie McKenzie remain "medium-term" propositions, which is roughly around 3-5 weeks.

Key position scramble for Tigers as injuries begin to bite

Sarah Black

RICHMOND'S key position stocks have been exposed by injuries to just three players.

Full-back Harriet Cordner has been ruled out for the season after tearing her ACL, full-forward Courtney Wakefield's shoulder injury has now been classified as "long-term", while ruck Poppy Kelly is on the comeback trail from a knee injury.

The ruck situation is the least dire, with Gabby Seymour slotting back into her former No.1 role, but Wakefield's absence has meant skipper Katie Brennan (174cm) has been forced to take ball-ups when Seymour is resting.

That has a knock-on effect for the forward line, leaving 18-year-old Stella Reid (who stands at 173cm) as the sole tall target alongside mid-sized goalkicker Christina Bernardi.

The club has said the best-case scenario for Wakefield's return is in the final rounds of the season.

Last year, the 34-year-old booted 10 goals for the season, or 23 per cent of the Tigers' complete tally.

Sarah D'Arcy, who played as a forward at Collingwood but has been a defender in Richmond colours, started in attack in round three as a replacement for the 180cm Wakefield.

But it lasted less than a half before Harriet Cordner injured her knee, forcing the 172cm D'Arcy back into defence.

Against Gold Coast, D'Arcy was outmuscled by Tara Bohanna, with Bec Miller swapping from Sarah Perkins to the in-form full-forward in the second half.

There aren't many options to come into the side, either.

Who's in the wings?
  • Ingrid Houtsma, 176cm, 18 years old, defender/winger
  • Meg Macdonald, 172cm, 23 years old, defender
  • Akec Makur Chuot, 178cm, 29 years old, defender
Makur Chuot missed the first two rounds with COVID-19, but has not played since being available for selection.

Richmond face the Western Bulldogs this weekend, who without Izzy Huntington (ACL), currently field two recognised key forwards in Bonnie Toogood and Nell Morris-Dalton.

Burchell has done an ACL - Gone for 12mths. So much for our medical staff who said it wasn't an ACL during the game -
McClelland has an ankle syndesmosis - Gone for season
Dempsey - test this week but chance to play #lolnorf0

Assume Kiely and Bernardi will come back in for the top 2. Please no more Molen.

Stahl also needs to be dropped so not sure who comes in for her - ? Reid

We now have 6 players out for the year. A horrid injury list after 5 games.

Richmond AFLW Injury Update

Richmond will be without two players for the remainder of the season.

Richmond wing, Hannah Burchell will miss the remainder of the 2022 AFLW season after scans confirmed a ruptured ACL in her left knee.
Burchell was injured in the third quarter of Saturday’s 17-point loss to the Bulldogs at Whitten Oval.
The 26-year-old has been a regular senior player for Richmond since joining the Club from Geelong as a delisted free agent prior to the 2020 season.
Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan said the Club would rally around the popular midfielder.
“Serious injuries are always hard to take, and we are incredibly disappointed for Hannah,” she said.
“We will support ‘Burch’ as best we can, and she has the entire football club behind her for the full timeline of her recovery and rehabilitation.
“Hannah is a great person to have around the Club and even while injured, she will continue to have an impact on the group with her uplifting personality.
“We are wishing her all the best for her recovery.”

Utility Laura McClelland will also miss the remainder of the season after sustaining an ankle syndesmosis injury in the second quarter of yesterday’s game.
McClelland, 20, has played 11 games for the Tigers as both a forward and defender since being selected with Richmond’s second selection (No. 25 overall) at the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft.

“We are incredibly disappointed for ‘L-Mac’, who has worked really hard throughout the offseason to establish herself in the senior team,” Sheahan said.
“Injuries are an unfortunate part of football and L-Mac is another player that we as a football program and club will wrap our arms around.”
Midfielder Kate Dempsey will be assessed during the week for her own ankle injury suffered late in Sunday’s match but is likely to still feature against North Melbourne.

'It was a bit of a weird one': Tiger star's unusual injury revealed

FORMER No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie has revealed the nature of her unique calf injury for the first time.

Speaking to womens.afl, the Richmond midfielder said she required an operation on extra calf muscle that had grown around her Achilles and into her foot.

"It was a bit of a weird one. I had a bit of extra muscle in my calf, it was causing me some complaints last year," McKenzie said.
"We had some scans and had a look around to see what was going on, and it turns out I had extra soleus muscle in my calf that we went and removed and started that rehab journey from there.
"I had that surgery in August. It was a long rehab process and something that we don't see often as athletes. I was learning on the job, and so was the medical staff, but I think we handled it pretty well with a really good plan moving forward, and we were lucky we were able to move that goal forward and actually return a bit earlier than expected."

The extensive recuperation sidelined McKenzie for the first four rounds of the season, with the Tiger recording nine disposals, three tackles and a behind on her return against the Western Bulldogs, playing limited minutes.

The Tigers lost to the Bulldogs by 17 points, with the loss further soured with season-ending injuries sustained by Hannah Burchell (ACL) and Laura McClelland (ankle syndesmosis), while the extent of Kate Dempsey's ankle injury will be assessed during the week.

It was the Dogs' first win for the season, beating Richmond in the contested ball (112-87) and total disposals (244-183).

"The message (from coach Ryan Ferguson) was we kept our fight up. We ended up having one rotation, so we really kept fighting. Even though the going was getting tough, we just kept at it, and I think that was a strong message going forward.

"We won in clearances (by one), so that was a positive, but around the ground and that contested possession work, I think we lacked a bit, so I think we'll go ahead at training and work on that physical side of things."

Misdiagnosing an ACL on game day does not qualify as injury mismanagement LOW.

And read the article on Mckenzie in a post above, I am here to doubt Rob Innes could do any better getting her back given she looked in fine fettle first game back. And shoulder, syndesmosis are obviously impact injuries, as are ACLs.

So what evidence are we actually left with that any of these injuries have been mismanaged?

LOW up to his usual low (pun intended) standards I assume.

To insinuate that an ACL was misdiagnosed is absolutely stupid.

Firstly, you are NEVER 100% sure about an ACL until scan's reveal the damage. You hope for the best but always fear the worst.

Same thing happened to Brisbane's Gabby Collingwood last week. They thought it may have been a PCL and the commentators said as much but scans revealed an ACL. Again, hope for the best but fear the worst.

And that is why Rob Innes is where he is and LotW is where he is - Say No More!

I was incredibly impressed with Laura McClelland who despite having her season shot to pieces was consoling Hannah Burchell on the bench.

Sometimes its just the little things that tell you lots about a person.
