This will be the 2022 VFLW season thread :)

Preseason has begun!

Nearly the entire 2021 playing list and coaching team are back, Matt Dea has joined the coaching panel.

Training is now beefed up to 3 nights per week plus an online session, similar to an AFLW regime in preparation for next year.

Fresh off a maiden finals series, Essendon VFLW will kick off its pre-season today in preparation for the 2022 season.

With the Bombers entering the AFLW competition at the end of 2022, the strengthened VFLW program will see the players elevate their training schedule to three nights a week and undertake an online education session.

Construction of the club’s new state-of-the-art women’s facilities has been completed, with the Bombers planning to host VFLW home games at the NEC Hangar for the upcoming season. The VFLW players have full, dedicated access to the two ovals, indoor hangar, gym, altitude chambers, pool and hot/colds for recovery.

Uniquely, the Bombers’ VFLW elite high-performance and medical team is staffed almost entirely by females.

The Bombers look set to take their VFLW program to the next level in 2022, after an historic 2021 season which saw a preliminary-final appearance and captain Georgia Nanscawen become the Bombers’ first-ever Lambert-Pearce medallist as the league-wide best and fairest.

AFLW/VFLW football operations manager Charlotte Miller said there were substantial updates regarding the VFLW program ahead of the commencement of their pre-season campaign.

“This season, we’re really excited that our training program will be stepping up a notch to more closely mimic AFLW training weeks. We think this is a really great opportunity to see who from our group is able to step up and take this challenge on,” Miller said.

“Pleasingly, almost our entire 2021 playing group are returning, minus those who have been successfully drafted to the AFLW competition. We are also very excited to welcome a bunch of very talented young players from across a number of NAB programs who have the opportunity to train with our program before the NAB League kicks off in a few weeks.

“In a further sign of our program’s stability, all members of our coaching panel will also return for the 2022 season, including senior coach Brendan Major, Gavin Urquhart, Chloe Laan, Brett Pollard and Jarrad Campbell, as well as a new appointment in former Bombers AFL player Matt Dea. We are also continuing to work closely with our AFL program, with some guest coaches to feature in our VFLW program across the season next year.

“With the extended lockdown and a late running of the VFLW season with finals, the academy program we had intended to run has now been absorbed into our VFLW program, exposing all our players to it and giving everyone the opportunity to buy in and prove they are ready for Essendon’s AFLW inaugural team in 2022.

“We’re really excited to build on the strong foundations we’ve laid across our VFLW program in recent years, as we continue our preparations for our inaugural AFLW season in 2022/2023.”

Gavin Urquhart, didn't he play for Norf?

Imperfect spot for it but doesn't need it's own thread:

Wonder if that's due to higher training loads and being able to strengthen the other muscles to take the load off the ACL?

It's the Pfizer.

Further, any links showing players who've come in and out of the squad?

I know Barba's at the Suns and Lori Stepnell's just signed with Williamstown.
Don't think so but watching the video I saw 30 different players, of which at least 8 players are wearing numbers that either weren't used last year or were used by someone who has gone to another club to play AFLW. There's probably a couple more that have been drafted to AFLW clubs that I didn't remember straight away too.

They did say that they've retained the core group, and named a few people like Nanscawen, Ugle, Clifford, Heil, who returned. They were leadership group last year so makes sense that they wouldn't be going anywhere.

VFLW Captains and Leadership Group announced:

Congrats to Mia-Rae Clifford who has been promoted to share the role with the Georgia Nanscawen.

Nalder was elevated back to vice captain too, but unless I'm missing something, that's it. So a leadership group of three and two of them are co-captains?

Essendon VFLW stars Georgia Nanscawen and Mia Rae-Clifford will share captaincy duties after being elected to lead their side in 2022.

Nanscawen proved an obvious choice for the playing group to re-elect into the top leadership role for this season after a stellar 2021, which saw the incumbent leader claim the club’s first Lambert-Pearce Medal as the league's best and fairest.

Rae-Clifford has been elevated from the leadership group to earn her first captaincy honour after also enjoying a career-best year, placing fourth in the Dons’ best and fairest count.

Senior coach Brendan Major announced the news to the playing group as the Bombers set their sights on a round one clash with the Western Bulldogs next week.

Nanscawen said she was delighted to be chosen by the playing to co-lead for a second year in a row.

“It’s a huge honour to captain this club and to do it with Mia is fantastic,” Nanscawen said.

“It’s going to be a huge year which will provide a number of challenges we haven’t experienced yet, and I’m looking forward to getting out there and facing them.”

Rae-Clifford was also ecstatic to share leadership duties with Nanscawen, saying she’s excited for what the VFLW Dons can achieve in 2022.

“It’s a massive honour, I’ve never held this position before so I’m so (thankful) for all of the girls for having that belief in me,” Rae-Clifford said.

“I can’t wait to give everything I have out on the field and off it.

“I think team success is massive and I think we can push each other (to achieve something).”

Rounding out the leadership group is the return of Simone Nalder to the vice-captain position, which she held in the Dons’ inaugural VFLW season.

After a preliminary final exit in 2021, the VFLW Bombers are striving to build on their impressive season as they chase their first premiership.

Their round one clash against the Western Bulldogs is at the NEC Hangar on Saturday, February 12, with the bounce at 1:30pm AEDT.

Charlotte Miller (AFLW/VFLW Operations Manager) on the newbies on our 2022 list;

“There’s a lot of new names, in particular a number of players who are relocating to Melbourne to join our program,” Miller said.

“We’ve got Sarah Ford (3), who moved down from Sydney in November after spending a couple of years on the edge of AFLW selection for GWS. She’s a big Bombers fan and has family in Craigieburn, which has made the transition easier.

Mikaela Trethowan (2) is relatively new to football but has relocated from Wangaratta to pursue VFLW.

Joanne Doonan (26) will be joining us in a week from Ireland. She played with Carlton’s AFLW side in the season prior to COVID and returned home following that. She recently captained her side in the All Ireland camp.

Bella Clarke (45) is a young player from Darwin with lots of talent. She came through NT Thunder and has been playing with Southern Districts more recently, along with some doing training with the Gold Coast Suns. She’ll be with us in time for round two.

Jordan Zanchetta (42) is a really exciting footballer from Brisbane. She played 14 games with the Lions in the AFLW before being delisted, and she’s moved to Melbourne to hopefully break back into the AFLW system next season. She’ll be available for round one.”

The VFLW Bombers can make another six senior and 10 development list changes over the course of the season, while also being able to sign up to 15 AFLW players at the conclusion of the AFLW season.
