With ya on this. I think him and Hewett, two in the midfield group evidently not existing according to AFL media are two I think will have major impact if we are a finals side, the way we breakdown at the contest is alarming, these two live and breathe that
Thanks for your training report. I'm with you on Fish. I struggle to see where he fits in the side. Not a natural small forward and won't be high on the list of midfielders given a decent run with injuries. Not sure where we can play him to make the most of what he has.

What does he offer when he’s unsighted for the other 2 & a half quarters though? Nearly all players on the list could pull out a “good game” like cuners does once in a blue moon - he’s just not able to do it often or consistently enough. How many years on a list for what - a couple good games & a few ”glimpses”. Yet plowman gets smashed by the fans week in, week out.
He offers a lot when he's played in the midfield. He has good pressure around the ball, is strong and powerful but evasive (remember the 4 essendon players he danced around to give Walsh a clean shot at goal?). He's very similar to Bailey without the output - much like we rate Stocker as similar to Hodge. I think overall he's more effective than Dow and had Cuningham not gone down and got more minutes in the midfield we could have an idea as to what he actually can produce, although with Teague who knows.

Interesting to see some pessimistic assessments of Cuners on here. My recollection is that it was really starting to gel for him before he did his knee.

Lets see how he goes as he recovers from ACL - I look forward to seeing him carving up opposition in due course. Easily best 22 when fit.

It was a for a big game against Essendon, BOG, but still hadn't shown consistent ability to stay in the game.

Hope the ACL is a blip and he continues that upward trend, obviously.

Think fish will play his position of strength this year, HHF/edge of stoppages

Think he will have a big year

Of course - would love for you to be right - but (for me) an easy bet against your call based on how he plays and what he lacks for a bloke of his size.

I think his vision of play is limited to about 5-10 meters around where the ball is and is too focused on maintaining personal possession by little jinks and moves going around in circles not seeing teammates or being predictable enough with ball in hand to have teammates position themselves to receive with confidence. Limited ability as far as genuine accurate penetration by foot and no evidence of superior speed or running power.

Cuningham has him covered anyway - and competitive options are emerging in Kemp/Philp/Carroll/LoB for various positions he has been tried on. Honey ( although not small) Owies and Durdin are better small forwards at this stage- they tackle and in dued course a little X factor no doubt will emerge from Motlop if that is what people want to see.

Big year for him/Dow/Setterfield I think - the CLub isn't in the mood to 'wait'.

I am just looking forward to a more contested/balanced gameplan, then we will see many of our inconsistent types in a different light.

Personally, I don't care who steps up, it's all about the team and I suspect we will have a considerably better year

yep - I have no favourites except for: Charlie/Harry/McGovern/Kennedy/Cripps/Weitering/SOJ/Cuningham/Honey/Stocker/Kemp so far :p

Fisher's lack of a right foot is the main issue. No matter how much space he gets he's always got to swing back onto the left. Often gets himself into trouble because opposition know this.

It is a flaw but he isn't alone- I think he has the skill set to be a first receiver and quick feeder to runners as a mid-rotation - if he could improve his genuine team play he could be quite a good link man as he has natural evasiveness and should be able to find support. Against this is no great evidence of being able to actually hurt opposition by scoring - as you say he is closed down pretty easily as a small forward because of the no right side thing.

Can you say that when you're playing against yourself?

Fantastic vision. But geez, we look pretty ordinary moving the ball out of defence.

Yes, the vision is incredible and gives a wonderful insight to those that weren't there.

The very very high number of turnovers is a positive if you want to take the view that more pressure is being applied.
The very very high number of turnovers is a negative if you want to see better ball movement and control.

I love hearing and seeing that we will expect more pressure on the opposition because that was my biggest frustration these last few years. However, I am concerned we do not have the required quantity of skilled kickers if we are going to play a possession game. We have too many poor kickers and decision-makers. Unfortunately, this was highlighted in the video.

Interesting times ahead.

blimey has he fallen this far, or was he never that high up?

yep, but hard to see how an acl is gonna add to his development.........

Agreed - he’s put on more size and looks strong and dynamic.

He didn’t play the final qtr of match sim yesterday but look in great touch for the first half of yesterdays session.

With Fisher, Durdin, Owies and Philp we have a group of hungry smalls that will put the opposition defense under enormous pressure when they get their chance.

I don’t want to have a pessimistic take but if fish Dow lob don’t show much of an improvement on previous years I’ll probably lose hope unfortunately because I want all three to do well. They each do some things really well but they need to round out their games.
if they have the line drawn under them this year, so be it - it's actually a sign of progress if we are shedding players we believe won't be taken us further, even if they later perform at another club..........we are probably the club that has hung onto fringe players the longest and yet, in saying that, the minute we cut loose someone like a ramsay or macreadie, all hell breaks loose..........

His 2018 season was really encouraging. He's never been the same since he had his leg broken. I'm doubtful he can recapture that 2018 form. I think we have the midfield covered with other options. Other than his first game in the position I don't reckon he has showed much in his small forward role. We'll see if Vossy and Co can put him in a spot where his talents are best utilised. I hope I'm wrong and he thrives in a super competitive Carlton team. We'll see.

Fisher is a natural footballer who has had past success as a midfielder and some degree of success as a small forward.

I think we will see a pretty different player now he’s been removed from the Teague context. Williamson and Setterfield are other players who were given a wrap by a few supporters in the intra-club yesterday - they were also taken in the 2016 draft and have had numerous injury setbacks along the way.

There’s often splintered development for players drafted (or traded into) rebuilding clubs, and throw in a couple of coaching changes and an under funded footy program and you can see why many plenty of guys haven’t kicked on.

As much as I’m looking forward to seeing how Cerra and Hewett integrate I’m as excited to see which players reignite their careers under Voss and co.

The thinking is wrong omac over young.
Omac has a career of getting found out at fullback. Yes, he will pull out a good game here and there but Melbourne leaked goals over the journey. Carlton need to invest senior games in the young talented players like Young. Basically, give talented youth first crack in a toss up selection between them and a senior player. Yes to Young, Honey, Durdin, Carrol, Kemp, Pickett, owies. No to Omac, Mcgov, Plowman, Lob, etc
Young was a peripheral player in a squad where KPD was a glaring weakness and he's effectively moved on for more opportunities - you're speaking of him as if he was an in-demand prospect.
He's in similar position to Oscar, whoever wants it more should get the gig but I believe that Oscar's style of play is a greater requirement than Young's.

Yep. Like Young’s potential, but he has some steps to take. OMac despite rumours to the contrary has always been a decent lockdown defender. Weitering is the key to our defence. If he is released to a less accountable role JW has more value to the team. OMac more allows this, Young has always been a better interceptor than lock down defender. The mix leans more to OMac for mine. Don’t discount some development to Young changing this, but round 1 has OMac in front for mine.
