if it wasnt for melbourne fc, co captains would never have existed in the afl

those campaigners were the first to do it when mark neeld was at the helm

I have no issue with co-captains, realistically there is always multiple leaders within a club. Just because Cotchin doesn't have the title doesn't mean he won't continue to lead and mentor, same with Jack and Dusty etc. They all have their own styles but all are key to helping younger guys through.

Grimes and Nank probably compliment each other well as leaders so co-captains makes sense. They can split responsibilities, be it media/mentoring or whatever.

I see no problem with two guys instead of one, there is always multiple leaders within teams. I like it, good-luck to both excellent choices.

Reckon Nank was eating a hotdog at training one night and paused, thought for a few seconds and said out loud "Actually, I wouldn't mind being Captain"

And nobody argued...lol
Reckon he choked on his hot dog sauce when Nank said that...Actually, I wouldn't mind being c...c....co...captain...co-capain...
So the players voted him co-captain!

Poor decision - last time co-captains (inc a Grimes) were announced it was Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove. That went real well 😒

Serious question - why don’t many of you like the idea of having co-captains? I want to understand what the issue is
Ever heard the phrase "Too many cooks in the kitchen"? Or the adage "A Camel is a horse designed by committee"?

Basically there is a reason why ships and planes have 1 captain and one focal point for leadership

because typically people use the word captain with the single person meaning in mind rather than the rank that many people can have. Co-captains essentially sounds like Co-single man in charge. Not that I necessarily agree but I think that's it. That and tradition.

Gone of the days where captains are the solitary voice of on field leadership and the voice of the coach on field

Two guys with the title won’t impact the way the club works on field the role these days is about upholding standards and values

The Swans have had co-captains for years and it works alright for them.

I think if Nank was a reliable 22-game player he’d have been sole captain. And if Grimes was 27yo he’d have been sole captain. I don’t like dual-captains and it goes against Tiger tradition but I can see why they’ve taken that path.

I just hope Dusty, Graham and Vlastuin make up the 5-man leadership group. It’ll be a brave player to not tow the ‘company line’ if you’re answerable to those 5.
