Great to see a true local footy club like South Districts going so well and I am here to tell you all they will WIN the flag

I can tell you now we have not once spoken about winning the flag or even finals. We are just hoping to improve each week and where that takes us we will wait and see. Its round 1 guys, you can not honestly pick finals teams or premiers this early. There could be injuries, recruits, anything.
Bentleigh and South Districts have to be the 2 outsiders as we are the 2 promoted sides.

I think that this is not true these days in the ammo's. Promoted sides have a great advantage in that they usually keep the strong grand final side from the year prior and maybe even pick up a few players. They keep the same game style and you have 8 other teams who you have not played recently, whom do not no that style.

Very good point, but we still have more to prove than other sides and prove we deserve to be in this division. The thoughts of Rabs are his and his own. Not of the South Melbourne Districts.

Don't think St Johns will be any good this year and will be very lucky to avoid relagation.

I heard they have only trained on a ground once, and have had low numbers at training.

Can anyone from Aquinas give us a report on the condition St Johns ground.

st johns ground only just got approval to be used last week. whilst soft there is next to no grass, the surface is uneven, and the lines weren't even properly marked... a shocker of a ground.

Don't be too harsh on Rabs2000 Saints, as i have a feeling he may be the previous premiership coach (2000) showing his love for all things Red and White.

Am i right Rabs?

Whether that be the case or not, we dont want that added pressure at this stage. Make sure all districts fans are there early this sat, unfurling the flag before the seniors and if you see the 2's you may see the return of the enigmatic Jack "Sparkles" Cronan.

Thought the umps were fine -with the exception of deliberate out of bounds, and I thought the game was played in good spirits. Didn't see a blue all day - and Didn't see 44 belt anyone, however I am happy to bow to better judgement - just didn't see it.
Yeah the umps were OK....but there was still a bit of inconsistency between them in the game. i.e one would pay holding the ball, the other would call play on for exactly the same thing.
That's gonna happen in most games though....especially down in D2....
One thing I found funny was in the last quarter our ruckman got tackled, and got a kick away in the process.....the ump called holding the ball, saying it was because he didn't HANDBALL it! hahaha....that was a weird one.
Thought we should have won by more, but Bentleigh fought it out well.
Agree.....but as McAdam41 said...Bentleigh did play poor footy for most of the day.....should've done better....

11 and 5 dominated in the second quarter, although we seemed to be able to keep 5 quiet in the second half.
The Freak (11) did do really well in the air....you look and him and think...."Yeah, like this guy can play footy"
He's tall, and lanky.....but he was a 5 time league B&F (I think that's right) before he missed a couple of years through injury, so he can definately play.

I agree with you Saints. Great to see the number 26 getting a few touches on Saturday.

Interesting topic, i may be corrected but 12 out of the 14 promoted sides won in Round 1. Bentleigh and Ajax (B) the only losers. This suggests to me momentum and belief, it may not last the whole year but it is certainly a good way to start. Mind you the demoted sides faired reasonably well, not sure of the exact stat.

The vibe at South is cautious optimism. No-one is getting ahead of themselves. Only on this forum... We'll all know where things stand at the half way point, as I think the summer and lack of ground use will hurt some more than others.

Got to say I'm a little miffed at the constant references to Bentleigh as a one-man band.
Not sure who this one man is?
Could it be:

- Chris Sharp, former VFA player who booted 100 goals last year.
- David Martin, also a former VFA player who has won five league best and fairests in a row.
- James Robertson, one of the most skilful players in D2 and could outmark just about anyone he comes up against.
- Lachlan Tangas, 21 year old, formerly of Sandringham Dragons who booted four goals from the wing last week.
- Scott Lawry, one of the quickest players going around.
- Frank Dimattina, former Richmond Under 19s player and member of one of Melbourne's most prominent sporting families. Knows how to get plenty of the ball and how to use it.

And that's just to mention a few.

It's a pretty big band, with quite a few star performers.

For the benefit of those with a short memory could you please remind us of how this band performed on Saturday?

The comment was made about Sharp. He is a star and although you guys aren't a one man band it is pretty safe to say if he gets the pill in his hands 10-15 times a game Bentleigh are going to have a lot better chance of winning the game. As with any team and their better players.

As for listing players and giving helpful little stats out, that doesnt mean much. Every team in the amatuers has a handful of players that they could claim to be at an elite level. It means nothing. The best way to prove the comment wrong would be to get some wins on the board.

Seeing as though you guys got beat on the weekend and Sharp didn't get in the best then the guy who made the comment, even though he isn't right, has more supporting evidence.

Good luck against glen eira.

Hasnt this bloke lived up to his name already. Pulling no punches. Should of called yourself Hutchy or Carro.

Do you play in the ammos?

I was at the SMD game on the weekend and there was a player who just kept on getting the pill, I think his name was Kealy.
Last season I saw SMD play four times and I can not remember him playing, If this bloke lost some weight and starts to run hard I think he could be a good D2 contributor.
I'm not sure how old he is late 20's I think, can anyone from SMD let us no if he is new to the club or did he play last year?
I was also informed that there former captain is no longer an automatic selection for the ones, I got there late on Saturday did he play in the two's or was he injured?

I'm bloody working this weekend!! Can someone please make sure heaps of photos are taken of the flag ceremony? Cheers!

I'm not sure what game you were watching but he was very ordinary. Only got a game because of all the injuries they had. Expect him to be back in the 2's this week.

Is it a fitness thing with Kealy? Is that why he will be in the two's, he looked all class to me and he was not short of confidence.

I think it is a bit of that. I think everyone playing for the districts had a bit of class about them, they looked very good. I think Harper could tell you more.

SMD may struggle if there big no8 full foward does not play, I think the guy that played FF on the weekend was the full back from last year. He is not the answer at FF, maybee no7 who had a big GF last year could play there, he is a good mark and can kick goals from what ive seen.

You seem to know a bit about the districts thevet, can i ask what your affiliation is?

I'm not sure if #7 will get many touches this year as he may be admiring his new boots all game and prefer to keep them clean than chance soiling them on a dirty football.
