The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

So, another year reaching for that one moment in September!
Really interested to see what Craig Jennings will bring to the backline, and what James Hird will bring (will he do in-game strategy?)

Maybe in order for Cameron to be fired we need a really bad year, might hurt now but if it means a new voice it'll do us better long term. Another year where we sneak into finals and maybe win a game it's easy to think "they've made finals this year and they're a young side so they'll be better next year". A year like 2020 where we finish 11th or comfortably out of finals and there's no choice but to move on because if we make finals again there's no way they let Leon go.

James Hird has a significantly worse coaching record than Cameron and never won a final.

For all of the Cameron is no good, he has coached a side with huge injury tolls to 5 out of 6 finals series including 3 prelims and a GF

we were pretty good in preseason and round 1 (despite losing) before being shithouse in round 2.

I feel we are always too quick to blame Cameron.

When we've had the same issues for half a decade, I'm ok with blaming Cameron.

He is very good at getting the guys to kick in when our backs are against the wall.

The problem is that our backs wouldn't be against the wall if we'd only kick in the rest of the time and stop losing games like the weekend's!

I can compare us to Fagan's Lions these days, given I watch both religiously. It is very rare for the Lions to lose a game they shouldn't. By comparison you can almost set your watch to the Giants dropping three or four games that they shouldn't each year, and you can pick it in the first quarter if not before.

It’s more something different, fresh ideas.
We are stale.
We aren’t too quick to blame. It’s the same old same old and we have been that way for 9 years.
The club has and board are never seem accountable.

Only reason we made 2019 was we fell into the finals with our meh play style and decided to change that style to a “beat the s**t out of the opposition” which while great, Hey I enjoyed it as well, there was nothing left in the tank for GF day.

but the same old same old has resulted in 5 out of 6 years in the finals. All with horrible injury roles.

Winning at least 1 final in each.

Falling into finals. We have never looked like going all the way, if we are honest even in 2019, except for 2016 where we faulted on the finals.
Yes but everyone has injuries. If we are getting more than most, which we have at times, then shouldn’t the coaching regime be questioned there as well?

I would like our club to challenge while we have this talent, not just make up numbers.
In the the two games so far it shows nothing has changed.
He has had 8+ years to win it and hasnt. Coaches with lesser talent have gone quicker.
Time for a refresh.

For me the pass mark for Leon for 2022 has always been Top 4.

Leon’s only ever achieved that once in his near decade.

That’s worse than Hinkley who is unlikely to survive to the bye.

Our strong Finals record disguises our Top 4 failures.

At 0-2 and in disarray on field, I think it’s safe to say Top 4 is now unattainable in 2022.

That’s why I want an interim HC for the next 20 rounds.

Hird appears the only realistic choice.

It will help inform the decision of who should be appointed as permanent HC for 2023.

As a very short term aside, what happens on Saturday if Dew’s GC boys take us down at home?

We are on an on-field precipice as a club IMO.

The interim coach after round 2 is ridiculous

I too am now cranky at LC but you probably should try to live in a more realistic world tbh…. Cos there is no chance of this narrative happening

The fact what you say is true is a major problem with our club.
This is crazy.

No one gets sacked after round 2.

Let alone a coach who has made the finals 5 of the last 6 years.

Been 8 years and two weeks
but he is successful in that 8 years.

no one gets sacked with those results.

He has a great squad, but horrendous injuries, his 8 years are not a failure by any measure.

Hasn’t won a flag.
Everyone has injuries, and if we have more and more often then isn’t that under the coaches methods?
He has had 8 years, great he has made finals no flags, can’t get the job done. Time for a freshen up and new ideas because season 2022 already feels like the exact same as the other seasons.

We have made the top four once in regular season. With our list - injuries or not - that is terrible.
We won 11 games in reg season last year. Really should have missed the 8. That would have been two years in a row.
Disregarding all that… we play a game style that will get destroyed by good teams.

One possibility that hasn’t been raised is whether the CEO and Chair has - take a deep breath - prepositioned Hird as our new Coach for ‘23.

Why is a former HC and all-time great Hird really at our club?

Why did Robbo suggest Hird may be the next Giants coach in pre-season on Fox Footy?

Why has Hird taken at least one main training session and is in the Coaches box on game day?

Why the Club press coverage saying how great Hird has been since he arrived?

LC was appointed a near decade ago on Sheedy’s recommendation.

Would Hird arrive without an endorsement from Sheedy?

What if the decision isn’t about WHETHER to change HC but WHEN?

I might be completely off the mark, and I will be happy to apologise if and when LC receives a new 2 year extension, but I think some of these questions are worth considering.

Hinkley with a higher regular season win rate than Leon.

With regard to Finals performance, it’s Leon ahead by only a nose in % win terms.

If we lost one more final, or Hinkley won one more, there would be no difference.

Overall, hard to separate the two coaches records.

I believe I read on the Port board that Hinkley will become the longest serving AFL coach without a flag around the bye this year.

Leon Top 3 in that stat.
