Players you are surprised are still on an AFL list

Jack Silvagni, he can mark but that's about it. A terrible shot for goal and falls over too much.
I don't see his value to the team.
He could re-invent himself as a backman if he bulked up a bit.

I’m not sure you watch football

Rohan can bust a pack, pressures the opposing ball carrier out of the backline and is generally a pretty reliable set shot. That fills a need at Geelong as far as I'm concerned and makes life easier for Cameron, Hawkins and hopefully Close and Stengle.

I'm not saying that WHE isn't a better player, I just don't really see what he'd offer to Geelong that would be more valuable than what Rohan has.
and for a redhead, he seems to miraculously attract beautiful women.

Tom Campbell has eked out an eleven year AFL career despite having never once been a best 22 player or played more than 10 games in a season. It's nice to be tall.

In fairness to him he's pretty solid both forward and in the ruck. He's just been stuck under a coach who hates rucks (Bevo) and then behind Goldy and now Ryder/Marshall.

Although not sure why he's at St. Kilda

Initially it would have been in case either Ryder or Marshall were unavailable, but then we later picked up Hayes, who has proven good enough in the backup role that we can partner him with either of those guys, but if two of those 3 are out at any time you’d imagine Campbell would come in.

He’s actually been going really well in the VFL, so he’s been stiff to not get a look in yet.

It's a flaw in the offseason player movement system. Clearly the Saints needed a 3rd mature ruck. Couldn't get Xerri. So got Campbell as insurance, but they gave Hayes a chance over summer too.

Really Hayes should've got his chance to impress over summer before it was necessary to sign Campbell and then you'd use the list spot on depth in other areas.

Every club should stop signing guys like Campbell in October/November. Leave list spots to try out some younger options and if none present themselves by Feb then sign up Campbell.

James Bell is a very bad player.
Yeah he has a crack but seems sorely lacking in talent at this level.

Saying that the coaches seem to like him and Collingwood were allegedly keen last off-season so....

You could literally pay a VFL level player 80k a year to "bust packs and pressure the ball carrier", which generally means run 5 meters behind them and actually do nothing but look good because he "chased". Busting packs is the bare minimum, like we can't actually think trying to get the ball (while failing) is a "role" now? This has the Jammara compliments all over it - oh he created a contest, the absolute bare minimum, how good is he!

Rohan was 150th for average per game tackles inside 50 last year, 140th for score involvements, 300th for 1%ers...his role is s**t and he is s**t.

I'm sure WHE could offer more than that in Geelongs system.

Just rename this the Mason Cox thread.

Yet the same place you quote rankings from it ranks one much higher

Really? Players with Rohan's combination of power and speed are just coming out of cereal packets in the VFL? It's actually not a very common athletic package, one that would almost certainly see a player drafted, unless he hasn't come through the traditional pathways. Combined with him contributing 30ish goals a year as a third fiddle and I'm quite comfortable with what he offers.

He'll never be a darling of the fantasy heads, but I see the value he provides to Geelong's forward line, compared to the days when Hawkins pretty much had to go one on four and make something happen, otherwise the opposition waltzed it back out with practically zero pressure. Tom Hawkins has made the AA team every year since Rohan arrived, he made it once in his first twelve years in the AFL. I don't think it's a coincidence.

I'm not sure how someone like Cyril Rioli measured up with statistics like tackles inside forward 50, but I know that if I were an opposition carrying the ball in my defensive 50, I'd focus more on getting the ball on my boot and out of the danger area than taking an extra second to try to hit a teammate lace out, rather than get mown down from behind if I knew he was around. Those are the tackles that Rohan specialises in and I guarantee you that it'd be in the back of opponents' minds with Rohan as well, when they hoof it up the field to no-one, or to a Geelong player.

Anyway, at the end of the day whatever anyone thinks about Gary Rohan and his value, it's hard for anyone to argue with a straight face that they're surprised that he's still on a list. I'd guess that he generates more conversation on here than 80% of the players in the AFL, for a start.

Apparently one of the best blokes in footy, that can't hurt either. Know that you're getting a somewhat solid backup ruck who's a good character vs unknowns coming from the state leagues. It makes sense.
