I have devoted far too much of my brain space to BF and know each poster on the Freo forum far more than I'd like to admit
That long post (detailing the difficulty picking up the ball and losing all skills) about NOD was definitely Joao 100%. I remember it and thought it was too harsh at the time.

Agreed, Young looks terrific and he’ll be a great player but there’s some weird lack of confidence there or something. Chapman DGAF, he knows exactly what he wants to do at all times and pulls it off.
Chapman is just a better player I think. No knock on Young.

Like how I was seriously excited the year we drafted Hill, Walters, et al, but then the next year Fyfe came along and I was like... ok... this guy is another level again.

I watched the whole peel game. I thought Warner was good. Needs a little polish with his disposal but got a lot of the ball. However After 1 game I can not say that I saw anything that indicated to me he would be at Dangerfield, langdon or smiths level. To be fair he is just a 19 year old with 1 wafl game hard pressed to remind me of a Brownlow medalist, a 2022 premiership wing or a 3 time premiership player.
He looked ok though

I remember watching Langdon in what I think was his first WAFL game and knowing instantly that he was plenty good. I didn't quite get those vibes from Worner but geez, getting that much of the ball in your first adult game at the age of 19 after a disrupted preseason is extremely impressive. He's going to be extremely handy at worst.

Compare his game to Henry's who's played AFL, and has been in the AFL system for 3 years, not to mention at top 10 pick. The workrate was the big difference between the two.

My point being how can anyone judge a player off two games.
Lucky there are posters like Cesoir, wtg and our Peel watchers who form opinions based on a large body of evidence.
Matthew Richardson (knows a thing or two about football) said one night on TV that in his 15 plus seasons at the tigers he knew within a couple of days whether a new draftee was going to be any good. He reckoned he could tell with 95% accuracy within two or three training sessions which of the new draftees each year would have decent AFL careers.

Acres is 27 - he isn’t going to suddenly improve his kicking after 9 years in the AFL.
Worner is 19 and could still improve his kicking - he’s only been at the club a few weeks

Plus, Worner has natural aggression and loves a contest. Acres is the opposite who has to mentally apply himself before going in. His natural "style" will come out again like it has numerous times over his career.

I got AFL vibes from watching Shai Bolton in 1 state 18s game. Sometimes you can just tell. But like everything, some are good at it, some aren't. There are a lot that aren't on here, Tundra knows that, he's been around long enough so it's weird he's waited until now and on NOD to get fired up.

And, let's be very clear, NOD hasn't made it yet. He's played 1 reasonable game. This time last year Treacy was doing the same and there have been plenty of players throughout the AFL that impress early in their careers and can't/don't go on with it. Tim Ruffles anyone...

Posters are making those comparisons about NOD, not Worner.

Feel a bit like Chapman has overtaken Young. I feel Young is an absolute talent but either lacks the confidence or hasn't been coached to take control of his run and disposal.

Chapman kinda does whatever tf he wants and it almost always works out.

As I keep saying Chapman will be an absolute freak. He’s only just getting started.

Young is doing just fine imo. Hasn’t used his super boot as much as we’d like but imo his other attributes still make him a pretty solid player. Chapman just has all the same attributes but seems to be quicker and smarter.

Chappy is an absolute gem, could be anything with his skills and vision. One of those rare players who can sum up a situation and exploit it in a split second.

Young on the other hand has a full kit of AFL ready skills he is developing and will become a very good player, not as good as Chappy but then not many will be.

Bottom line for me is that it's not a case of either/or between Chappy and Young but how to utilise each to the best advantage for the team. We are fortunate to have two such good young players to help build a team around for the next 10 years.

The Dangerfield & Smith comparisons were in relation to NOD, not Worner. The same logic still applies though, I guess

One of the turning points for Walters career was a bit of tough love from Ross Lyon about 3 or 4 years after he was drafted when he banished him to Swan districts for a few months with an ultimatum to get serious about playing AFL. Maybe Henry needs a wake up call of a similar nature? Times have changes a bit since 2012 but is there still a place for some old school hard ass treatment by the modern coaches?
I guess playing at peel should be that, but as someone said above - Worner is playing to save his career every single game he plays for peel. He’s absolutely desperate to give his all every time he goes on the park for Peel this year. I’m not sure Liam has the same mindset at the moment. At one point in the last quarter he was caught holding the ball by an opposition player and when they both got up after the whistle went Liam was having a good laugh and friendly chat/pat on the back with the guy that has just caught him in the tackle from east freo. Didn’t seem too fussed about a bad turnover. I thought it was a curious way to react after what had been a pretty disappointing performance overall.

yawn

Missed the last quarter so missed the fitness of the full time afl guys overrunning the part timers, but only standouts for me were Meek, Worner (though looked a bit rusty) and the running patterns of Treacy and Amiss though delivery to them up forward was putrid. Easts did Peel in the middle.

Now i see why people were putting up Marsh's name as a potential mature age recruit. Leads strong, narks strong, acurate for goal. Big boy. Broekhorst was good too.

Otherwise not that impressive except to see the Wafl umps not call something or other in every contest like their afl counterparts. Quite refreshing.

We haven’t had that mix of talent, physical presence and motivation/will to win since Fyfe

He does know a thing or two about football but as far as I'm aware Matthew Richardson isn't one of our posters.

Let’s not forget that Treacy is just 19 and was picked up as a rookie. I think because he’s so big already we expect him to play like he’s 23, but he’ll take some time to grow into his body and become a bonafide AFL player. He’s only a year older than Amiss - taken in the top 10 - who we’re all prepared to give plenty of time to develop.
Was thinking this myself today seeing Taberner dominate it has taken literally 10 years of development to get to this point well done to all involved on the perseverance and hard work alot more patient than myself so Treacy and Amiss have a long runway ahead of them.
Lobb doing his role well atm I might add.
