Analysis Thilthorpe vs McDonald

During the lead up to the 2020 draft many of us were trying to make the decision to pick either McDonald or Thilthorpe. Some thought that TT was a safe pick because he was South Australian. Some thought that McDonald would want to return to Western Australia. But most did agree that we should take one of these players with our first pick.

It looked like that we had made the best choice with TT making a spectacular entry with his first game and with McD looking solid but being dropped from the Sydney line up. Today we see TT playing back in the 2's and McDonald starting to shine. TT looks more like a leading forward and McD appears to have a large tank and looks more like a large versatile roving forward.

These guys are only into their second year so I know its early but from what we have seen did we pick the right type of player? I hope we did because we have had a few years of poor selections which has put us back a few years. If TT is to be that leading forward type then we better have the midfield to feed him and TT needs to develop more strength to push off defenders plus he needs to improve his ability to take that high mark otherwise I think McD might have been our best choice. Hope like hell I am wrong.

I mean if you ignore around the ground ability, contested marking, goalkicking, skill at ground level, hell throw in ruckwork, then your analysis of TT as a mere ‘leading forward’ is spot on. A taller Tory Dickson

Agreed, I know its early but I just seeing more aggression at the ball in McD. I certainly am hoping for TT to show us more of what he can do. I think his consistency is a real concern because he has shown us he can kick a goal. Just need it more often

Second year KPF? - need a couple more seasons to make a judgement, even the great KPF have started careers slowly, and it also depends on the players around them.

From what I've seen, both should make the grade. I wouldn't be worried about TT, I'm worried that Fog is a first round bust

Both look like being very good players. The crows only had 1 pick so couldn’t have both. Enjoy the one you’ve got rather than worry about the one you didn’t.

My concern is based on our recent history with the selections we have made. 2019 we took Mcasey. There was the debacle of 2016. 2015 wasnt too bad but even Milera hasnt become the elite player we thought we got. We're still waiting for Fog to deliver. 2018 didnt produce a star it gave us two reasonable players in Ned and Jones. So I am concerned about our selections. Rachele is the one exception during the past 7 years. So I feel my concerns are justified.

I do not agree with your premise that TT is just a ‘leading forward’. Your description of McD fits better with how I see TT.

Have a look at TT’s km covered numbers for last year. They are at the very top end of key fwds, even in his his first year.

Himmelberg is in his 6th season BTW, not his 4th...


Just to manage everyone's expectations, here's the number of seasons some of the best young forwards have taken before kicking 30 goals:

Harry McKay - 5
Tom Hawkins (ok, not young!) - 6
Charlie Curnow - 3 (done it once)
Nick Larkey - 4
Max King - 2
Ben King - 3
Oscar Allen - none so far in his 4 years
Todd Marshall - non so far in 6 years

So let's give both kids a bit of time to develop before we say either of them is better.

Thats not quite true. The thread is about comparing TT to McD and whether we made the right choice. The basis revolves around our past poor selections. For me at this time I see a more competitive player in McD than I do in TT. Both have been in the system for the same length of time. So I am questioning whether we made the better choice. Now if you want to make this thread about struggling young forwards thats up to you. If you have an opinion regarding comparing the two players then please enlighten us. Your normally good for an opinion.

McDonald - 11 goals in 10 games playing in a strong system contending for finals.

Thilthorpe- 19 goals in 15 games playing in a rebuilding side getting poor delivery from mids who cant kick.

Across their short careers, Riley also averages more disposals, kicks, tackles, score involvements, contested possessions, intercept possessions, contested marks, marks inside 50, metres gained, clearances per game than Logan.

disagree. McD might not have had a great game but he certainly looked good on the weekend. He looks more assured at ground level fighting for the ball and he looks apart of the Sydney forward structure. I didnt say that TT was only a leading forward. I said he looks more like a leading forward. he certainly struggles to hold his ground in a marking contest. So at the moment I think my estimation is more accurate that yours. Perhaps some justifications for your comment. Remember its just our opinions. Its how I see the two players.
