Player Watch Rory Sloane - Re-Signed for 2024

Should Rory Sloane retire or play on in 2024?

Nope, next year
FMD.

Crows need to cut their losses with him at the end of the year, in terms of playing in 2023 and also easing any potential salary cap issues.

We have made tough calls in the last few years, this is another for the betterment of the Club.

Sloane was regressing before his injury. At his age, coming of an ACL with the form that he had, I cant imagine how it will be when he comes back.

Ironically I thought he played an OK game in the one he got injured.

Listening to 5AA, Sloane's playing on unless he gets a heavy tap on the shoulder.

He's such a weirdly positive bloke, when coming off the ground thinking "this would be good for me".

He then rattles on players who have come back. Does he have any self awareness of his form and that he was moved out of the midfield in his last game?
That presser he did was rather strange. He was talking gibberish that the injury is almost a good thing and that he's going to be much better physically after the time off. Does he realise his age and lack of performance over the last couple of years? I just thought it was a bit odd and demonstrated a lack of self awareness of where his career is at. He talked about how much he liked footy and maybe that's the case but I got the impression that he likes the money more and still thinks that he's a chance to get a contract extension. I hope they aren't giving him false hope.

Rory is all about getting his. That used to intersect with what was mostly good for the team.

Now that overlap is getting pretty tenuous

Dish up slop for another year and get paid $500k - $800k or go play for TTG ammys for 65k and a landscaping gig.

Real tough choice...

If he stopped playing he’d get a payout and I dare say we’d find him a development role. He said the other day he’d like to get involved in coaching

I think it’s really bloody disrespectful to Sloane given what he’s done for our club over the years. Let the man complete his rehab and at least try to get back for a final hurrah.
Jenny he wouldn’t be reading this ;) and the clubs done a lot for him too by giving him a 5 year deal when he had us in a weak position

How do you know he wouldn’t be reading this? he’s got a lot of time on his hands right now… nonetheless, he deserves better.

I think his entire form line from mid-2017 to now, when we discovered he wasn’t prepared to work hard enough to break a tag is really bloody disrespectful.

Agree.
His manager would also certainly be in his ear regarding his contact and how to play the PR game for potential future earnings.
Sloane hasn't been any good since 2017..that's now 5 seasons ago.
Before that he was an absolute gun for us and gave his all.

The quicker he can step down the better. I don't mind if he is kept on the list for another year to spread out the cash. Doubt he would do it until at least the end of this year at the earliest though, it's just too much money.

Minor point but I believe he couldn't break the tag because he didn't have the physical attributes whether that be size, strength or speed - it wasn't related to hard work.

Dostoevsky wrote about this

Some thoughts you'll share publicly with anyone

Some thoughts you'll only share with close friends/family

Some thoughts you'll keep to yourself

Some thoughts you won't admit even to yourself. The damaging ones. So you block them out. Sloane has some demons lurking in the back of his mind I'm sure. So is over compensating with all the positivity, not initiating a move out of the midfield, not giving up captaincy. As though any tiny admission that he's waning will open the negative thought floodgates.

Breaking a tag is only about hard work. And as an inside, clearance specialist he should have been much harder to shut down that he was.

A player who wills himself from contest is very hard to stop

Why is anyone getting annoyed at Rory Sloane. He has a contract. His job is to get on the park and perform. He doesn’t select the side.

Why isn’t anyone getting annoyed at Justin Reid or Matthew Nicks?

As list manager, it’s Justin Reid responsibility to organize the list in the best possible way. He gave him the contact. Rory only did what 99% of people would do and accept it.

Matthew Nicks is the senior coach. As a leader, he needs to make the hard decisions on who plays and who doesn’t. He needs to have the hard conversation with Rory to retire or keep going. If they keep him on, Rory is not under any obligation to retire, give any money back or allow a younger player to player.

Get annoyed at Nicks or Reid if you disagree with Sloane continuing on.

No Rory is under no obligation, legal, moral or otherwise to do any of those things.

But equally he’s not immune to his own performances or his own role in extorting an excessive contract. Remember this was a player who also publicly called for loyalty bonuses outside the cap so he could be paid even more by his original club. He only stayed when his dire performances in 2018 saw his free agency market dry up.

Mostly though, Rory is just doing what’s best for him. That’s fine, but all this great clubman malarkey just doesn’t fit.

Sloane has enough credits to be given respect. If he does or doesn’t make it back, he’s still been a great player for us and has led the team through a pretty horrid period of form with positivity, which is important. I think 12 months to get the body right and most likely without the captaincy next year - we might see a resurgence and one last crack at it from Sloane in whatever role Nicks sees fit. Most likely the role he played pretty well in the game he was injured.

His payout would go in next years cap. But we are going to be very tight for list spots so moving him on would be very beneficial

That’s just not true.

Touk Miller, Sam Walsh and Andy Brayshaw have all struggled with a tag in recent years. Are you seriously suggesting those guys don’t work hard enough?

We can have a legitimate discussion about whether Sloane right now is doing what’s in the best interests of the club, or the quality of player he has been, but to suggest he couldn’t break a tag because he wasn’t willing to work hard enough is ******* laughable. He has time and again put his body in places it should never be for the sake of this club and you’re taking pot shots from an anonymous Internet forum when his career is likely over. Grow up.

But they haven’t. Show me the articles?

Each of those players is a better version now than they have ever been

Blah blah blah
So why couldn’t he break a tag, why has he been so easy to nullify in a way others haven’t been?

Though I suspect that if you don’t know the fantastical difference between “put his body in places it shouldn’t have been” and work rate, then I’m not hopeful of anything but an apricot-slice like response
