Anybody know the average price to rent a motor car in Melbourne nothing fancy, just an idea.
Also about rental companies , wouldn't they have to have insurance covering every aspect of their business, all the vehicles too, but everything?

It made me wonder if they are insured, and surely they must be, to start a business?
Why do we have to pay insurance again when renting.

Curious?

Well it's more about the excess you pay if you bend their car. If there was no cost or potential cost to you personally then people would drive much more carelessly and as such the rental company's premiums would go up significantly.
They still must have insurance and there for the customer either pays for it totally at the hire point or the business should cover themselves covering any loss that may occur, they rent things people drive around in, it just appears to me that adding excess to what should be covered anyway as a business that “rents things people drive around in“ appears like a rip off. I am and I know others that are reluctant to rent cars because of the insurance addition and risk of money loss in hiring a car. If you have an accident. It just appears to me that the client gets done over and the car may be already covered no matter what , into the coffers of the rent company goes that insurance fee?…. Not a greedy whinge, just it just always puts the driving anxiety up a bit when they insist that it’s a better way and safer to pay the extra. Any how maybe I,m wrong and they don,t fully insure comprehensively their vehicles?? Its probably my greedy side coming out.

Cost amortisation I’d say.

Their insurance premiums would be astronomical, and they would have a lot of claims.

Yes true, I questioned the SIXT person when we hired a car in Melbourne , 227 dollars for three days but it came to 306 dollars with extra insurance.
But with the number of renting customers I guess they would almost be unable to afford the insurance premiums.
That of course is the people who set up prices for insurance premiums, somewhat like a specialist doctor charges miles above (in some cases) the set price, and a big fat gap is presented to the patient.
That seems a little like renting a car and insurance, and that is not the rental companies fault.
And I guess there is not much you can do but sit back an pay.
