Two crime families who have waged a murderous underworld battle on Sydney's streets used encrypted phone apps to advertise killings and spark "bidding wars" from hit men, police say.
NSW State Crime Commander Stuart Smith said a blitz on the lower levels of the Hamzy and Alameddine networks had uncovered a raft of evidence about how they have operated at arm's length from police

Since Thursday morning, Operation Hawk has targeted hundreds of people at the "bottom of the food chain" in the crews, and also visited people linked to outlaw motorcycle gang the Comancheros.
Assistant Commissioner Smith said the directive for Operation Hawk was to "take the gloves off".
It was carried out with "surgical" precision and targeted 310 individuals who allegedly took part in drug and weapon supply, violence and car thefts, he said.
"I will not rule out further arrests and you will not see it coming," he said.

Ahmad had recently returned to Sydney having spent time in Lebanon following his release from prison six months ago.
He was warned of imminent threats posed on his life, but chose to remain in Sydney.

The brother of executed underworld figure Walid 'Wally' Ahmad will remain behind bars after being charged with murder over the fatal shooting of Safwan Charbaji in Sydney's south-west.
Mahmoud 'Brownie' Ahmad, 34, was arrested by homicide detectives as he arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Doha about 7:40pm last night.
He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with murder over the fatal shooting of Safwan Charbaji, 32, outside a smash repair business at Condell Park on April 9 last year.
Mr Charbaji was shot during a heated argument between two groups of men outside the A Team Bodyworks shop on Ilma Street, investigators have said.
Another 35-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot in the face.
Mr Charbaji was driven to Bankstown Hospital by his brother-in-law but died of his injuries.
It was reduced or he was found guilty of manslaughter, served 5 years..Looks like he didn't do much time for murder.
