I agree, 6x800k is a good deal, but in 3 years time, he could be worth 1.3m if he's in the best few players in the league. Alternatively, he might not make it and it's a lot to spend, but I feel we are now in a place to overspend than underspend.

It's a lot to bet on a young kid, but the dogs did similar with Boyd, and it worked out / didn't work out for them.
Exactly, I'd love us to make someone the highest paid player in the AFL. Not because we should, but because we can. And because F**k you to the club who drafted/developed him!

The Australian NRL doesnt have drafts.. players dont even care about contract status with numerous moves made every year regardless..

And there doesnt end up being dominant teams..

In fact.. if you look at the past 20 years of AFL and NRL there have been a heap more different flag winners in the NRL over the AFL..

Barely any triple premiership winners in a row too..

The NRL actually seems way more equalised.. No drafts, no trade costs - just an enforced salary cap.

Does result in a lot of players playing for numerous different clubs throuhhout their careers though.. but so what..
Melbourne and Roosters have won 6 of the last 11 years...it's like Hawks and Geelong for 10 years.

My reasoning is nothing to do with his father, its based on other stuff. Although I will say adding his father's name to his surname just before the draft sends a signal dont you think? Anyway, time will tell.

FFS you’re not meant to drink the bong water - “other stuff” geez

And his step father played for a lot of clubs…

since 2000 the NRL has had 13 teams out of its 16 that have won the flag.. only one team (roosters did it once) has gone back to back and there have been no threepeats at all.. only three teams have missed out on a flag. and only one club (titans who only joined the comp in 2006?) hasnt made a grandfinal.

the afl has only had 11 of it 18 teams win the flag in the same period… the tigers went back to back and the lions and the Hawks both have managed the threepeat… 7 teams have missed out on a flag… although two of these (suns and GWS) havent been in the comp the entire 21 years.. 2 AFL clubs (blues, suns) havent made a grandfinal in this period..

so the NRL is miles out in front in regards to the even-ness/competitiveness of its competition.

yet no trade period, no draft, players simply make the choice which club they want to play for and if that club can accomodate them then its all good…

the equaliser is just a strickly enforced salary cap.. nothing else. no draft with the best picks going to the worst performing clubs, no compensation for losing a valuable player, no priority to the best players

so…why is it that, the AFL, with more strategies in place to try and even up the comp than the NRL has… do the results actually show less even-ness and 2 threepeats?..

surely you think the opposite would be true right?… or they’d at least be on par?..

Definitely food for thought

Thanks for doing the research and sharing. Fascinating. Come on AFL, get your act together

So how do the young players get allocated, are their zones?

We need to be actively talking to his manager right now and we should be prepared to do things out of the norm if there's a chance of getting JHF to us.

I just can't see Norf making much progress by the end of 2023, they look a complete shambles, just don't have enough pieces and only have a first rounder this year, no 2nd or 3rd! Reckon JHF will have had enough by decision time next year.

Nope…

The clubs have “feeder” clubs and young players gravitate towards the NRL clubs from there..

Some end up signing up with the NRL club in their juniors sides from 13-16 years old..

These players from their either go on to play for their chosen NRL club if they are good enough and if their chosen club can fit them in their salary cap..

I guess the difference is one comp is looking for an even unbiased system, while the other has the desire to protect the VFL.

Lol the other one has 12 out of 16 clubs from NSW and used to be the NSWRL.

I sometimes think the fewer players in a side the easier it is to change and become competitive. Like the NBA. Easier to get a couple of game changers on big dollars.

not really sure what point you are trying to make… the afl has 10 out 18 clubs from victoria and used to be called the VFL…

you second point could have merit.. they do have a fairly respectable 30 man squad though.. but player movement could just about about be classed as a free for all.. with players even moving clubs during the minor rounds with the season already well underway.

I mean QLDs complain about NSW bias because it used to be the NSWRL.

Yes regardless of draft there is complete free agency I think. Players tell supporters they are leaving in the season and just play out the rest of the year.

If the club isn't/hasn't been doing all it can behind closed doors as you mentioned then they need to be sacked..

Be honest though do you actually think they would have ?
That's the issue with this club, sooo much bullshit has been rolled out in recent years there is no trust.

Would a Geelong be moving mountains to get him if they were us ? Absolutely they would no questions asked.
