The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

The fact Hird is even in the discussion of being our coach tells me all I need to know about our club. The board have no idea and the afl who own the joint don't care.

Hird wouldn't get an interview at any other club. I'm not judging him on drug saga (did his time) I'm judging him on his coaching record and the fact he has been out of the game so long.

I wanted Leon sacked but Hird is not the answer. Players should not be picking the coach.

A significant challenge for the incoming coach will be the senior players' capability to adapt to a more AFL-level tactical gameplan.

Under Leon, for years it has just been gut busting hero ball. No real system or flow. Players hitting each contest one by one.

Now we have this established core who are well paid superstars of the game, but their football habits are from a very rudimentary playbook.

Age start of next season:
Nick Haynes 30
Toby Greene 30
Stephen Coniglio 29
Lachie Whitfield 28
Josh Kelly 27

Haynes contracted until end 2024, the rest until end 2026 or later.

Will they want to learn new habits? Will they be capable? Leon was their coach for 9 years. It's hard to change when you have been doing something the same way for 9 years.

This hasn't been tested. Hopefully, they will rapidly adapt and this won't be a concern at all.

Hearing the players support James Hird is not good news for me. Don't want another 'motivator'. Don't like the playing group hoping for another 'motivator'. Hope it's just a matter of kindness towards someone they personally like, not a genuine belief that he's the best option available.

Require a coach who is a tactician, and just as importantly I would hope the players understand and buy into that.

It’s not like they played like that forever. That’s the same group that pioneered the fast ball movement nicknamed the orange tsunami

I think the fact they have played so diversely over their careers makes them very coachable

Feel sorry for you guys. I'd be standing on a picket line outside the club headquarters with a NO HIRD sign. The guy is a cheat, an egomaniac and possibly a sociopath.

How Hird can be considered is beyond me. Surely the clubs duty of care to the players (especially the younger ones) should rule him out.
I'm also of the opinion that Mark McVeigh should not be involved in coaching following his comments regarding Kyle Reimers and the Essendon "Vitamins" saga.

There are plenty of other coaching options that don't come with the same baggage as per your poll.

I just checked who we play twice this season ( as our 7 losses are to the 7 top 8 teams, we are yet to play Brisbane).
Brisbane, Fremantle, Sydney, Carlton, Bulldogs.
A pretty tough draw. These coaches will be put to the test by that. My hopes of making finals are even lower now, I wonder if this " tough" draw is in the thoughts of the players.

Love the salty meltdown in VFL-land.

If the Club were going to appoint a HC who kept us out of flag contention all the VFL-types would be congratulating us.

Instead, we just get the smell of fear and panic drifting up from VFL land as they know that Hird has the ability take us to the promised land.

I think the best way to look at it as of today is as a 1.5 year runway to the 2023 finals.

Work out the 2023 coaching and list over the remainder of the season.

Experiment, view L’s as merely a draft and 2023 fixture positive.

Top 4 for 2023 is possible, if we use the remainder of 2022 correctly to set up for a slingshot into next season.

I think they tried that at the Bombers.

How’s that plan working out for them?

Solomon as an assistant I'm good with, Hird as the full time coach, definitely not what I want

Maybe there’s synergy in JH, MM and DS working together given their personal connection?

In that case, perhaps it’s best to view these guys as a trio.

I don’t expect us to magically start winning a lot of games over the remainder of 2022, but we should start to get a sense of whether this coaching trio can get us back on the right trajectory.

Phil mentioned the ball movement on the podcast as well, it's pretty glaring when watching us how stagnant it can look sometimes. Hopefully we see real difference and it's not just lip service, not asking for the orange tsunami to be back but just to be more lively when we're moving from our back half,

Fair enough.

41 wins and 42 losses and 1 tie in his coaching career
Never coached a team to a finals win
Last coached in 2015
In 2015 it was 5 wins and 14 loses including 110 point lost to StKilda and 112 points to Adelaide (StKilda finished 14th and Adelaide 7th)
As far as I am aware he has done no coaching or coaching courses since 2015
The game plan came under criticism for lacking dare and adventure, but they also conceded more than 100 points on six occasions. It culminated in the sacking of James Hird with three games to play.

Yep, best person to take your club "to the promised land"

Look, even Leon on a very bad day with half a squad could out-coach Buckley as we saw in the 2019 Prelim.

Thanks nonetheless for the Pies input on how to choose a HC.
