Is North Melbourne passing on Logan McDonald going to be the 2021 version of the Bulldogs passing on Buddy for Ryan Griffin

Hogan, Darling, both King twins, McKay, Curnow, Hawkins…
Hogan isn't a star, average a best.
Darling, see above.
Max King, took more than 30 games.
Ben King, time will tell. More than likely.
McKay, Took more than 30 games to see if he was going to be a star.
Curnow, See above.
Hawkins, wasn't evident that he was going to be who he turned out to be in 30 games.
30 games is a season and a bit, even Franklin took a couple of years (22*3 = 66) to show what he eventually had become. Franklin is the BEST forward of the last 20 years.

You said ‘looked like a star’, so I’m pointing out forwards that showed those qualities early in their career. That isn’t the same as ‘who was elite after 30 games’.

Paddy McCartin had all the same attributes as any of those forwards, career at the saints was riddled with concussion. Didn't get to prove why we took him over Petracca.

Wasn't Logan McDonald playing well vs grown men in the WAFL as a 17/18 year old? I get the go home factor would've been a worry when you're probably going to suck for a few years and playing key forward in a bad team is rough. But sometimes you've just gotta take the player with the higher ceiling.

Also as someone that loves key forwards i feel robbed not getting the opportunity to see Larkey and McDonald together for the next decade. That could've been fun to watch.

Hawkins had a 30+ goal season in 2009 when he hit the 30 game mark. Looked ‘pretty bad’ is a myth.
Hawkins was just inconsistent. On his day he was still really good from year 2 onwards. He didn't really go next level until the '11 GF

Hogan kicked 44 goals in his first year.
Paddy McCartin was ten goals behind at the end of his fourth...

How many forwards kick 44 goals in their first year?

Hogan at Melbourne was a star, but injuries and supposed off field stuff at Freo held him back. At the giants he shows glimpses of it from time to time, but mostly he's just a good forward now.

Paddy McCartin wasn't a star forward, never got the opportunity. He would have moments where you'd think wow (you still see them at Sydney this year) but he never put a full game together where he was the match winner. His best game was probably a 3 goal performance vs the Giants,

People forget how Good Jesse Hogan was in his first couple of years before his dads sickness kind of derailed him then his own illness derailed him again

North drafting Phillips over McDonald is more a result of an even worse decision by the club, which was to hire Scott Clayton into their recruiting team.

The bloke single-handedly butchered almost every Gold Coast draft and trade from inception through to 2017 when he was moved on.

Ironically it was Clayton who picked Griffen over Buddy.

Still think Jarrad Grant ahead of Riewoldt is worse in hindsight.

The guy is sub six foot, not explosive or disproportionately strong, not a clearance specialist or an aerialist, only has tidy skills. Not a single player in the competition has those attributes and is a star. Best case scenario wasn't a high ceiling but an ultra reliable leader.

If he gets his body right you'll get more out of watching Comben team up with Larkey.

Logan is going to be a gun, not a once in a generation foward like Buddy is.

Not A slight on Logan btw whom I was very impressed with against us on Friday, just that Buddy is a freak, and we will never see such a unique and unstoppable (during his prime) player like him for a very long time (if ever)

What happened to him, Don't trade with Demons. You just get spuds. Hogan, Watts, Scully and the list just keeps going.

I see this thread was bumped after one good game by McDonald now the trolls are out bagging us for recruiting Phillips.
What has MacDonald done before Fridays game? That’s right * all. While Phillips has been battling injury and health problems. It’s just unfair and stupid to be having this discussion so early on.

Seems like Paddy McCartin type situation, Good prospect that could of been anything derailed by illness. But Melbourne fans don't like that because they love giving it to Saints fans about taking McCartin over Petracca.
But it's funny because Petracca was pretty average until Yze, Williams and Burgess came to the club, reminded me of a Jordan De Goey type.

Not exactly comparable McCartin had known health issues when drafted and even when fit was below AFL standard

Yeah, type 1 diabetes. Not what made him step away from footy to get his body right, that would of been the concussions. when your longest run of games is something like 10 then you don't have a chance to be better than below AFL standards not to mention that he was playing with concussive symptoms.
It's not like losing a testicle affects your ability to play football.

Yes but the Saints drafted him knowing his diabetes which played huge role in his lack of fitness and lack of ability to string games together, it wasn't just concussion keeping him out. It was a horrible draft selection full stop.

Not at all, concussion were the reason why he couldn't string games together.

Hawkins? Are you being serious? Hawkins looked pretty bad until he turned 23.

Hawkins kicked 7 goals in his first two games (getting a Rising Star nom in his second game) and had 2x bags of 4 goals in his first five games.

In his first 30 games he kicked multiple goals 11 times.

There is absolutely no way that Hawkins looked 'pretty bad' early on - in fact he looked like a generational talent until he was afflicted with injuries later on.
