How many players can each club lose? Expansion rules explained

WITH the expansion signing period officially open, the existing fourteen AFLW clubs have been bracing themselves to lose players to new sides Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney as each build inaugural lists.

But what are the rules clubs face when it comes to losing players through expansion?
Each player in the competition has been assigned a points value which is calculated based on age, payment tier, career games and any awards they might have won.

To keep their first round draft pick for the upcoming NAB AFLW Draft, existing clubs must lose a total of 28 points worth of players.
Should clubs not reach that threshold, they will go to the draft without a first round selection.

Clubs can lose a variable number of players in line with this points system, based on recent successes and location.
For example, a club can reach that 28-point threshold by only losing a couple of highly rated players, while another might lose several players who each attract a lower points valuation.

Each of the top seven teams from the past two seasons combined may lose (via expansion) a maximum of:
Four players if in Victoria, Queensland or Western Australia
Eight players if in New South Wales or South Australia

Each of the bottom seven teams from the past two seasons combined may lose (via expansion) a maximum of:
Three players if in Victoria, Queensland or Western Australia
Six players if in New South Wales or South Australia

Based on cumulative ladder position across seasons five and six womens.afl understands
the top seven teams to be Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, Collingwood, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs,
and the bottom seven teams to be Carlton, GWS, Richmond, St Kilda, Gold Coast, Geelong and West Coast.

Wow, at first blush that looks like an absolute Dog's Breakfast. It appears like 3 Phd students have been tasked to come up with the 'fairest system possible', expect they have never played the game, or if they have , once so they know stuff. I'll suspend judgement other than that, because there just is not enough detail yet, but on first read it just got easier (pts perspective only) for the top 7 teams to keep their 1st round pick.

The AFL, and consequently the AFLW, seems to have this penchant to make the simplest thing as hard as is humanly possible!

Until we see exactly how it ends up working it’s difficult to say

This is the key, the driblet we have been given is just an alarming bit of fodder. The devil or delight is in the detail. But it stands to reason on face of it, Carlton will get it's first pick and Richmond won't - at that rate Richmond will be re-assessing its list very quickly and offering up players it might not have considered doing so with. Bizarre!

Seems like we won't have a 1st or 2nd rounder the way things are going as we'll need to trade for Grace Egan.

Too true - perhaps that's why we'll trade for fringe players with upside this year and get through to the next season as fast as possible.

yes i'd assume the club would have the points value of all our players and are now working out how to reach the 28 point mark

problem is would the Vic expansion teams be interested in players we put forward ?
would the interstate expansion teams be interested and our players be willing to move ?

seems like the power in signings has shifted dramatically in favour of expansion teams
give us players we want or no deal, you lose your 1st Rd pick

Again, let's wait to see the detail - but it seems a harsh deal to give the newest clubs like WC, Rich, GC and StK. There is no coincidence they all sit in the bottom seven. Imagine being GWS looking at all that - they can be raped for up to 8 players.....

problem is we have to take 3 picks in the up coming draft
one will be for Beth Lynch, so at the lest two more

ATM we have Egan & Graham coming over & Lynch to put on main list as she was a injury replacement + 2 draftees = 5 incoming
Akec is the only one gone so far so we have to get rid of 4

What happens with LTI's?

That's why I suggest let's look at the detail - there are a few Clubs with LTI's that will be a complex part of that Phd formula you would think? We have at least 2...probs 3 ....?

very true, as it stands, which of these teams do i think are at 28 point value
West Coast: Maddy Collier (signed with Sydney) No
St Kilda:
Matilda Lucas-Rodd (signed with Hawthorn), Jacqui Vogt, Cat Phillips (signed with Essendon) Probably
Richmond:
Akec Makur Chuot (signed with Hawthorn) No
Geelong:
Sophie Van De Heuvel (signed with Essendon) No

these are the bottom 4 teams and only one is close by the criteria the AFL has in place i think
the other glaring problem being in bottom seven is the points are spread over only 3 players

Yep its a shite situation. We had to give up the no.1 pick for Conti. Now the expansion teams can demand players like that without any cost

yep
the big s**t show is Don's get Prespakis (Conti like comparison) and get to keep 3 X 1st Rd picks, given alot of teams might not reach 28 points, these are very high picks
we on the other hand had only 1 X 1st Rd pick (Molan)

They could be spread over 4 players like the other higher Clubs, but what Club really wants to lose one more player than it wants to - and where is the incentive to develop some players on that basis.

  • "For example, a club can reach that 28-point threshold by only losing a couple of highly rated players, while another might lose several players who each attract a lower points valuation."
The term "a couple of highly rated players", doesn't indicate, clearly at least, that one player could be valued at 28pts - it kind of indicates two might be the minimum lost in order to get to 28pts - to keep a 1st Round pick - not sure it even sounds like enough value tbh. The details, let's hope the detail is better than what we've been told so far.

Bernadi sansonetti mclaren delisted

Sansonetti a surprise for me

She finished off the season well enough, McLaren no surprise at all, rather keep Sansonetti than Molan tbh - unless there is something significant we dont know about Molan's condition through last season gone. The bell tolls at some point for Bernardi - ding ding ding!

we're in the bottom 7, so any more than the max 3 has to be a trade
so no, can't be spread over 4 players like the top 7 teams

at a guess the newer players are bottom range, middle players are midway range & top players are high range in the points scores based on criteria of age, payment tier (new club), career games and any awards they might have won

Yes, but the expansion maximum loss may not be the same number required to keep 1st Round pick - you hope there would be synergy between the two criteria - but this is the AFLW and a very academic driven exercise!

Sansonetti a surprise for me

not surprised by these 3, about 5 -7 i had as under the pump

Lynch will be upgraded, Libby Graham coming over from GWS, so Sansonetti got squeezed out, it was either her or McLelland/Ross as far as defenders go

Bernardi Knee issues so obvious with that & age factor
McLaren another that was obvious given Libby Graham is same height 176 cm

but jury is still out on what will happen with Dargan, Jacques & Molan, the midfielders that are going to be depth with Grace Egan coming over

seem like these 3 were not wanted by expansion clubs
i wish all 3 players well for the future

To keep Molan and Dargan and delist Sansonetti is a f'ing disgrace. She had some very promising games towards the end of the year.

They've lost my sponsorship until Sheehan is removed from the job. She clearly has her favorites which is not professional enough for the role she is meant to do.

yeah agree

to be fair, Sheehan is the final mouth piece
Ferguson, Grant who's in charge of the young players and Mosley the recruiter would of had more say

but here we are Dargan, Jacques & Molan are still on the list
