I don’t think we can pick (if we put someone on the LTI for the rest of the season) anyone in the U18s. Young guns are available to us.

We had two KPDs that many of us liked Schlensog? And an Italian? name for a guy with a bit of mongrel. How have they gone?

Is their a ruck or a KPD who is mature and doing well in any of the state leagues?

This is from The Sporting News:

“Which players could be selected in the 2022 mid-season draft?

Ollie Hanrahan (Werribee/midfielder): The Ex-Hawk has bounced back after the delisting from Waverley Park in an impressive start with Werribee in the VFL.

Despite the surprising call by Hawthorn's list managers to delist Hanrahan, the young midfielder has left recruiters wondering why, as his performances under Werribee coach Michael Barlow suggest he's definitely up to the task of an AFL-revival.

Averaging 25 touches and five tackles, the 23-year-old has responded to the unfavourable news and could be on the radar for multiple clubs.

Hanrahan is listed as a top-up player for Sydney, in the unlikely event he'll be called upon due to the ongoing COVID-19 impact and protocols players have to follow.

The lively forward managed to play 29 games across five years at the club, with 13 of those being in 2021.

Bailey Rogers (Claremont/midfielder): Bailey Rogers has come close to AFL selection, after training with Fremantle over the pre-season as a potential supplemental top-up player.

Although not receiving an AFL contract, Rogers, who was nominated for the National Draft (making him eligible), returns to the Claremont Tigers where he won a Sandover Medal in 2021.

The goal-kicking midfielder has started 2022 in brilliant fashion, averaging 2.5 goals a game from 24 touches.

Sam Fowler (Collingwood/forward): Collingwood VFL player Sam Fowler has put his hand up for an AFL opportunity given the unfortunate injuries to Brodie Grundy and Nathan Kreuger.

The tall forward has kicked 13 goals this season and looks poised to provide relief up forward for the senior side, given Kreuger's lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Jye Menzie (South Adelaide/small forward): The crafty forward from Tasmania has put his best foot forward since being overlooked in the AFL Draft in November.

Playing in the SANFL, the crafty forward has kicked 13 goals in five games and presents as a dangerous weapon up forward for South Adelaide.

Oliver Davis (South Adelaide/midfielder): Fellow Tasmanian and teammate of Menzie, Oliver Davis has made the switch to the SANFL impressively, putting his hat in the ring for an AFL selection come June 1.

The midfielder averages 24 touches and five clearances and could be in line for drafting”

From Zero Hanger:

“Over-aged NAB League trio Max Ramsden, Jed Rule and Hugo Hall-Kahan have looked to redeem themselves in the East Coast state competition in 2022 and could be of interest to AFL clubs.

Sandringham pair Ramsden and Hall-Kahan have been prolific for the Dragons, with Hall-Kahan among the bracket of players requiring an exemption after opting not to nominate for the 2021 National Draft.

Ramsden was overlooked for a selection and has since sparked strong form in the NAB League, averaging 14.5 disposals and 19 hit-outs per game while Hall-Kahan has booted 11 goals to start his 2022 campaign.

Rule has been a formidable option in defence for the Oakleigh Chargers at half-back, averaging 15.3 possessions, eight marks and 2.5 marks per game.”

Jye Menzie as a small maybe? But prefer a ruck or KPD maybe Ramsden or Rule.

Anthony Munkara is this years excitement machine. 190cm FWD who also has the ability to have bursts through the midfield. If he’s available at our first, will be hard to pass up. Incredible agility / speed and silky skills.

I rate him hugely. Would also mean Essendon don’t get him. If we can’t get him though I won’t be too upset because I reckon Bedendo has similar upside.

Pinching him from Essendon definitely makes it sweeter.

Agreed, Bedendo has the tools. Would like them both. Would make us much more dynamic.

Is he an Essendon NGA player?

Looking at next years F/S list, I would love us to consider trading our future first and this years first. Either to move into the top 2 picks (Busslinger) or for a ready made Player.

I've been doing a little research and I'm a big fan of Matteus Phillipou,192cm 82kg mid forward from S.A. He is left footed and appears to have a nice balance to his inside/outside game, decent decision making and genuine goal sense, with range to 55. Athletically seems above average rather than freakish.
It also looks like his father Sam played 3 games for us in 1995, someone here may remember him?

Recent reports look very good.

Unfortunately the first round appears to have several KPF options but really only Buslinger as a decent KPD. If key trade departures don’t push our pick into top #3 territory for Buslinger then I wouldn’t mind a specialist mid forward.

Watched the replay. Geez SA are loaded with tall forwards/rucks, top rated prospects Scully and Barnett didn't even play. Will be interesting to see what they do if all are available.

Liked the look of Campbell, Keeler and Phillipou. Keeler and Phillipou will both probably be gone if they continue to play like that. Keeler in the ruck and up forward was quite impressive,.

A couple I liked for later in the draft too. Kelsey Rypstra looks very small, but fast and I loved his pressure/tackling. Foster looked ok as a forward and around the grounds as a ruck too. Wonder if he can play down back?

Yes I do although I never saw him play (not many did). He came across as a boom recruit with high aspirations when we were developing the side that played deep into the finals in the late 90s. We'd waited two years from the time we drafted him. However he only ended up playing three games. This article from the Coodabeens says he had some injuries but it seems strange for a young man described as "mature" and "disciplined" that he was delisted at the end of his first season. It sounds like there was a bit more to it ... but I'm only reading between the lines.

You know less is more. Brevity is the essence of genius. English playwright Noel Coward once remarked that wit is like caviar. It should be savoured in small quantities not lashed around like jam.
A footballer who had all these qualities was Sam Phillipou. The Western Bulldogs were really keen to secure the big key position player. They traded Darren Baxter to Hawthorn to draft Sam the man with 1992 national draft pick 29. But the Bullies had to wait for the Woodville-West Torrens star to cross the border. Phillipou was a young champion at SANFL level. He was as big and agile as an athlete whose surname has a few more esses. Philippoussis. Super Sam was 189 centimetres tall and tilted the scales at 90 kilograms. Opponents found it difficult to out position him in marking contests. Furthermore his ground game was competent.
The big fellow finally arrived at the kennel at the end of the 1994 season. The Bullies gave their recruit the number 21 guernsey. It wasn't given to just anyone. The jumper had been worn with distinction by such players as Tony Buhagiar and Steven Kolyniuk. His pre-season form created optimism. Though only 20 years old SP had a mature attitude. The new powerhouse was a disciplined and organised bloke who followed instructions to the letter. Also he liked to join Libba for extra gym work.
When the 1995 season started Phillipou got his sea legs in the reserves. He took pack marks like he was leaping at a tennis ball. Also he had a kick like Haile Gebrselassie in the 10000 metres final at the Sydney Olympics. The solid South Australian received a senior call up in round 8 against the Roos at the Whitten Oval. He came off the bench and got involved. Across half back took a pair of power marks in the third quarter. On one occasion he delivered the ball with elegance to Brad Johnson who kept running and goaled. Unfortunately the Sammy debut was not crowned with success. The Kangas won 15.15 to 13.6.
Phillipou was in the starting group the following week against Essendon at the MCG. Lined up at centre half forward. The selection caused an immediate impact. 20 minutes into the first term the P guy marked in the middle of a pack. He goaled from right on 50. Early in the second he made a yard for a diving mark and in the one movement handpassed to Steve MacPherson who ran in a straight line and booted truly from 35. And close to three quarter time the number 21 worked his way to the front of a pack and took a monster grab. Don backmen punching his forearms and attempting to spoil from the back were like throwing cream puffs at the town hall. Phillipou went back and goaled from 40 on a 60 degree angle. In spite of the Phil heroics the Dogs lost 15.11 to 9.13. The bitter pill was the EJ Whitten Cup being presented to Essendon.
Sam Phillipou played in the round 10 game against the Tigers at the G. Appeared at centre half back. Did alright. Doggies down 13.18 to 9.10. Thereafter Sammo had a few injury problems. His intention was to return via the twos. Sadly he was delisted at the end of his one and only season.
Three games. A career that was short and sweet.
We need to remember that back then 189cm was a decent height and tall enough to be a KPF if you're solid enough (and he was, even as a 20yo). Probably the equivalent of 193cm in today's scale of things. Which is roughly how tall Matteus is.

Seems like Sam played another 10 years in the SANFL for both W-WT and Port Adelaide before retiring in 2005, but I have no idea how he went.

Anyone know the back story of why he was de-listed? Did he achieve any glory in the SANFL?

So looks like Busslinger will go earlier than our first pick which KPD’s might be available with a later pick?

Lewis Hayes (brother of Port Adelaide ruck Sam Hayes) is one name that's been mentioned.

Plenty of extra options at KPF. Below is taken from PMBanger's draft thread (which is good reading) from the start of June. Isaac Keeler another SA forward/ruck who dominated the state game on the weekend will probably push into this list in the next update.

Below is his view on whether any of the KPFs could transition to KPD roles.

Wardlaw, Ashcroft and Busslinger atm

Cadman and Jefferson are the two I think could be KPDs if required, Cadman would fit in to a role like Harry Himmelberg I imagine as someone with a good read and mark of the ball but maybe not super one-on-one, similar to Jefferson but he's one I think could develop into a one-on-one role a lot better. But I'm confident enough that both will be capable KPFs and shouldn't need to transition to a KPD role.

I think Busslinger would be capable of playing round 1 like Gibcus, he doesn't have the raw athleticism of Gibcus but is a smart player which allows him to intercept well, and he's probably more damaging with his disposal and offers more in transition. I'd say he's pretty similar to DGB however, but again I like his disposal a bit more heading forward, but DGB is probably better in one-on-ones

A whole lotta ~180cm midfielders rated in the top 5 there, surely clubs learn soon?

A 180cm midfielder would have to be an extraordinary talent for me to use a top 5 pick on them. I’d just take the highest offer on the table on draft night, not saying you can’t be a good player at 180cm in the midfield but when do they ever end up being the best handful of players from the draft in the long run!

Matt Rowell could be.
