Closing in on 30 years of existence, success for Fremantle is not as disgusting as it once seemed to be. It's funny watching them still have a chip on their shoulder for so many years, sure, but it's already passed the point of sad. If they finally snag a flag, good on them, maybe they'll be even more campaignerish, maybe they'll lose their unhealthy hate, but ultimately it affects me very little what they do in their little pocket of the universe. No worse than dickheads from other clubs carrying on with hubris anyway.

I've said for a long while that if you look at numbers, 2023 is their year. First conceived in 1993 (yes, they were established in 1994 but the decision to put them into the comp came in 1993), first final in 2003, first grand final in 2013. This year is the experience to go on with it next year. Should they win this year, it'd feel a bit early, almost always there is some previous experience needed.

As much as I'd like to see Brisbane win it because I always liked them during their late 90s/early 2000s era, I actually really dislike them now. Chris Fagan, as nice a guy as he may be, carried on like he'd won a ****ing flag a couple of season's ago when they easily beat us. He can go and get ****ed.

I hope the SANFL post vision of the worst miss I've ever seen in today's game. Playing on from a mark, running into an open goal and from 3m out tries to launch a wet ball into orbit. Didn't even hit the post.
Vision here:

And they lost by 1 point!

Harris Andrews is actually the weak link in brissys backline. Cant pick the ball up, slow of mind and body and likes to zone off…..
be a perfect fit for our defence

Agreed, verging on career-worst form at the moment.

Can only assume he is carrying something, as his ability to peel off and impact marking contests has fallen off a cliff.

Currently struggling to hold good position when the ball is in the air and is a complete liability at ground level.

Lions will no doubt be hoping it turns around soon - I can't see them being a genuine contender this year if Andrews remains in a rut.

They've still been taking role players from other clubs, it's just that it's working for them. James Aish, Will Brodie, Jordan Clark, Rory Lobb, Blake Acres..

It feels like in the AFL world the difference between 'failures and cast-offs' and 'crafty pickups of undervalued players' is just how well the team is playing.

I don't think you can purely draft you way to a flag, those pickups are key to fleshing out a list and filling gaps.
Getting specific players to fill a specific role and fill a specific gap are absolutely essential.

What Freo used to do was pay the farm for everyone and anyone who came available, even if it was in a position they were strong at. Previously, Freo seemed to believe, despite all evidence to the contrary, that they could recruit their way to a flag and turn players who had failed at other clubs into champions.
A lesson in failure that they seem to have learned.

I think this is their year, or maybe 3 to 5 season's time. They've jumped up with a new gameplan and piss easy draw, so should finish top 4. Unfortunately their squad still has major holes, as their KPF are quite weak. If they don't win this year, they have a harder draw next year and teams will be better prepared to counter them.

It would then take a few more seasons for their young KPP to develop enough to carry them through. I think that's when they're more likely to get it done. A bit how we missed 2015, took a few years to re-tool and then had a seasoned squad with more finals experience who were able to win a GF from nearly 5 goals down.

I see the Pies have gone to the AFL umpires department asking for a please explain about the umpiring of that grub Ginnivan.

Got a couple of soft ones from what I saw. The others he didn’t get are straight out of the Selwood/Shuey textbook which I thought are supposed to be called play on where the player contributes to the high contact by dropping at the knees and/or lifting the arm?

Remember that glorious week where ducking was your prior and they called it ball? Loved to see it. Another classic one week emphasis point never to be seen again from the AFL.

Just like they have justified Joel selwood doing it for 15 years the VFL media are trying to do the same with Ginnivan.

The kid does it every week and now the umps are getting pissed that he is sucking them in .

His coach needs tell him to cut it out not go moaning to the AFL .

Ginnivan is forcing head high contact which is what the AFL are trying to stamp out

Breaking - Steven May has been suspended by Melbourne for one-match for getting into an altercation with teammate Jake Melksham on Sunday night while drinking. Both had been drinking. May was still in concussion procotols and shouldn’t have been drinking

Wrong side of the bye.

Lot of footy to play between now and finals. Have Freo blown their load early? Can they sustain their healthy injury list? Only time will tell.
COVID is a ticking timebomb for them. Lack of finals experience is also a problem.

Finish top 2 and they are a good chance to make a GF. Otherwise, I'd see them knocked out in a prelim.

Yeah Covid is the real elephant in the room for this season for everyone. Could you imagine finishing the year Top 2, getting 2 home finals and then having it sweep through your club? It could literally rob a side of a flag through no fault of their own.

Bit like their womens team in 2020. Looked a monty to win their first flag and then the whole shebang shut down.

Pity
