Toast Round 15 = Collingwood 88-77 GWS

Comical that we “won” the behinds count 22-5 but WE were the ones penalised for a deliberate rushed behind, gifting them a goal.

It was the most ridiculous umpiring decision I’ve seen this season, which is really saying something.

Doesn’t come close to the Moore sliding in the goal square to rush a point and being penalized for taking the legs.

Yep. Declared that Sidey was time wasting and played on. Sidey and another player were arguing he was well within his rights to take his 30 seconds just like any other player.

Interesting that the umpire said they’d been directed otherwise. I personally didn’t mind it as I’m not a fan of players milking the clock but clearly players need to know that’s what they’ll do in that circumstance before they do it.

Yeah, I’m not sure about that. He definitely touched it on the line but given all the variables that was never going to be enough to stop it going through or change the rushed behind outcome. IMHO, by the letter of the law, I think the free was justified. Just not sure it’s in the spirit of the game in those sort of conditions.

if he touched it before the ball went thru the line, then the letter of the law would be that he touched it within 9 metres. The question is whether the opposing player was putting sufficient pressure which is probably not. When darcy kicked it he was. In the spirit of the rule, he probably shouldnt have risked the kick. Also, he knew it was a problem immediately after he kicked it because he wouldnt have dived so desperately.

Yeah, it’s about intent, which is interpreted differently inside or outside 9m. Outside 9m is now automatically deemed deliberate, while inside 9m is situational and an assessment needs to be made.

On replay the ump confirms he paid it for outside 9m.

A moot point because of the umps wrong guess, but touching before the line I see the intent as similar to rushing/touching an opponent’s kick on goal. Moore was trying to prevent an adverse outcome (a deliberate rushed call) rather than deliberately rushing a behind. Therefore it should have been play on and a behind awarded.

Happy for you to think that. If it had have been another player other than Moore on the line touching his own kick from outside 9m then I think your point would be valid. Much like Murphy a few minutes later.

so it's strange, ronny, that the umpire said that sidey was wasting time when the game clock was stopped....so he was wasting time that wasnt counted eh?

I was listening to him tell Sidey to hurry up and kick the goal. Sidey was telling him that he still has time on his shot clock. Yet when I looked over at the time. It was still stopped. I was screaming at Sidey hoping he’d hear me through the tv to kick it as I could see why the Scump was going to do to him. And sure as hell he did. But by all means Sidey should have been allowed to take his set up time. That’s what the rule states. It says that the umpires must umpire the shots at goal consistently. Which means they can’t demand Sidey to hurry up before his allotted time. Just because he is close. That’s not the determinant. What if Sidey needed the time to compose himself from the over 50m jog from the 50m penalty.

He did, but then he followed it up by clearly touching it on the line.

Looking at it another way, if a player wildly kicked the ball to a boundary with nobody in the vicinity, but the player then chased down their own ball and got to it at the boundary but their momentum carried it over, would that player then get called for deliberate out of bounds? No.

That might work for deliberate out of bounds but I’m not so sure for the rushed behind. Devils advocate and touching it on the line equally reinforces he was deliberately trying to rush it through. If had have been any team mate then he’d get the benefit of the doubt for progressing the footy toward a team mate.

well if the time clock was stopped and was waiting for sidey to kick it to restart, so that it could run for a couple of seconds and then get stopped by the goal umpire signalling the goal.....then its a perplexing world. And that's not even considering a shot clock that has no relationship to the game clock...

I’m so rapt that Murphy is delivering. I always had faith in him and always talked him up on this forum. He’s a jet.
I’m also pleasantly surprised how well we played in the first 3 quarters; the GWS team is STACKED with A graders. They are definitely not worthy of their current ladder position.
Playing one short in the midfield nearly cost us in the last. I would never have believed I could see a player more out of depth than Bianco. I saw that in Chugg today.
…. I’m also not buying what Ginnivan is putting out. When finals are on and the physical heat arrives, I’m going for McCreery.
Darcy Moore needs to be released to CHB. He needs a lock down FB. Hopefully this Dean guy is good. IMO this will lead to a bit of shuffling, maybe Q plays defensive winger…. And Ginnivan gets squeezed out.
Having depth, going into finals is fantastic!

Wouldn't the clock start when the umpire calls play on?

Thought it resumed as soon as he reset the mark. Shot clock restarted and I think they were saying there was still 18 of the 30 seconds on the shot clock remaining when he called play on. That I thought was what Sidey was asking about.

They were advised to be consistent. What was consistent about forcing Sidey to kick the ball wicket. He’d just jogged over 50m from the penalty. Surely he can take some time to compose himself. Secondly, I did notice that the umpire still hadn’t restarted the game clock. While he was demanding Sidey kick.

Should have been a 100m. Not sure why GWS received so many warnings.

Also thought Ginnivan was treated really poorly.

Disagree. Thought the 1st 50 was there, Ginni fell over a little too easy to merit the 2nd.

Do we put the last quarter down to them playing last week and us having our bye?

Or did we maybe get a bit of false hope about how well we play in the wet with our win against Freo? Our form in the third quarter against Hawthorn was as bad as the last quarter this evening.

At least JDG comes back at some stage and helps us link up from D50.

Also, Beau absolutely embarrassed Ward with that tackle 😂😂😂

Bounce of the footy in wet conditions seemed to go their way. Not sure you can read too much into it given the talent they have.

I don't understand why Sidey was faffing about. We were on top and I would have thought he'd have wanted to keep it rolling.

Yeah it was close, but it looked clear to me (only a few metres from the behind post). Plus I don’t think Murphy would have remonstrated so strongly and for as long if Moore didn’t get there.

Edit: replay here, behind the goal footage shows the footy deviate when Moore’s hand is near the ball. Nick Daicos questions it too. Like the Hawthorn one the ump guessed and guessed wrongly.

The one against Hawthorn was for below the knees. It was wrong but wasn’t for rushed behind.

Yep, as I thought against GWS, Riccardi pulls up and stops out beyond the top of the square which means even if Moore touching the footy on the line changed anything, he wasn’t “under pressure” when he rushed it through on the goal line.

Cast your mind back to 2010 when this was a weekly occurrence, we are going to win the flag
The draw on QB. God that was awful. 9.22 should rarely win you games. We were SOOOO inconsistent mid season too. If you'd have told me we would beat both St Kilda and Geelong within weeks of each other, especially after QB, I'd have told you to go jump. The odd thing is, with the eveness of the competition, how consistent we have been, this side is better placed than 2010, especially if we win these next few weeks...

Fly's presser

A few heart murmurs at the end?
"Yeah, it would be nice to win a game and put the feet up on the bench, but it's not our story at the moment. I just said to the players that I'm really proud of their ability to galvanise themselves this week, support those who have been under fire if you like and come out and execute. For three quarters of the game, we were proud of our efforts".

What does a week like that do to the players? Is it a big distraction?
"You get pulled. I think your attention gets pulled away from what you need to do. I think that's reality. I can speak for myself and that's how I felt my week's been. I think our ability to get to work this week, and I've said it before we were really well prepared to play. We trained as good as we had and then it's just a matter of going out and execute and again for most parts of the game I thought we did that".

The game could have been over by 3QT, but you couldn't put enough pressure on the scoreboard.
"Yeah, 22 points. Some of those were rushed. Modern footy, if you don't execute you give the opposition hope and today we gave the opposition hope. We just need to get better. We're winning games with so much upside and growth in us and improvement in what we need to do. It's a massive part of the game isn't it, goal kicking.

Steele Sidebottom was excellent leading from the front and to have one of your real leaders stand up especially after a distracting week.
"Yeah, he played his 278th game and makes him 4th all time in the Collingwood games played. We acknowledged that just before the game. He's come a long way. We showed some highlights of him kicking 10 goals in a TAC Cup Grand Final as a young lad and now he's still going well at whatever age he is. We're really proud of him".

What did you make of the decision to call play on when Steele Sidebottom was lining up in the goal square from a 50m penalty?
"I spoke to Steele and he said that the umpire has the discretion to call play on if he thinks the player is time wasting. Maybe I'm to blame for that because I educate or we encourage our players to take every bit of that 30 seconds on offer to us. Until they change the rules, that's what we're going to do. For moments like the last quarter, there's 30 seconds less that we have to worry about to defend or for the opposition to score. We've been learning that lesson right back from when we lost games early in the year, the Geelong one in particular where we weren't taking our 30 seconds which gave more time on the clock for the opposition. Apparently that's a rule".

The Darcy Moore rush behind decision has created a lot of discussion. What's your interpretation of that and what do you teach the players?
"I can't put myself in the umpire's shoes to ask him why that decision was made. From what I saw, he kicked it off his boot accidentally and touched it on the goal line. Rightly or wrongly, it's a decision made. We can't control it, it's done so move on. Whether it's an error, who knows, I'm not sure".

How impressed are you with Darcy Cameron and what are you going to do with the ruck when Brodie Grundy is available?
"We're excited to announce that he's [Darcy Cameron] signed a new contract. I think it's 3 years and he deserves every bit of that. He's really stepped up when Brodie has been out. Marking the ball really well wasn't he. Not many guys were marking the ball in the air like he was today. Futuristically, we don't know, it's too early to tell. I said this two weeks ago that I'm just hoping when Brodie is available we don't have to stress about a decision to make but that's getting closer to being made and what it looks like. I think Mase [Mason Cox] is still playing well. Going back to Darcy, we're rapt with how he's playing".

When is Brodie Grundy expected to return?
"I think he's back in about 4-5 weeks so still a bit of time".

Brayden Maynard's 150th game and he looked on early and did a great job restricting Toby Greene to just one goal. Can you speak about how important he is inside the walls.
"Yeah, we celebrated his 150th game yesterday at the club. We had his Mum and Dad in and actually we had all the Dads in so that was pretty cool. Our welfare team organised it about a month ago. To have all the Dads sit in the team meetings was really special. On Bruzzy, his competitive nature is something we feed off and his contest was brilliant again today. I thought it was one of his best games of the year. I think he's certainly a part of our DNA that we thrive off".

Have you spoken to Jordan De Goey since the press conference on Friday and are you expecting him to be at training tomorrow?
"Yeah, I spoke to him a couple of times and hopefully I get to speak to him tomorrow. Based on the conversations I had, I think there's some movement in terms of feeling better. I don't know what that equates to yet. There's definitely a slight shift on his mood and hopefully I catch up with him at some stage and see where that takes us".

Is JDG happy with how the club has handled the situation? Is he angry and upset?
"I'm not sure. I'll dig deeper when I get a chance to really sit down with him. Look, we want Jordy back. He makes us better. At the right time".

Could JDG return next week?
"Potentially. Again, I'm hoping so. We hope he can get himself in a place where he's comfortable to step in and be a professional footballer again. We're hoping that's as early as next week but time will tell".

First time since 2019 you've won 5 consecutive games and you are 7th. In your wildest dreams, could you imagine the first season being as good as it has been under your tutelage?
"It's been a big week to be honest. I'm looking forward to going home and put my feet up [laughs*]. I'm learning on the job. What have I done, 14 games. Leppa says he's going to give me a banner for my 50th door stop. It's been that kind of year. I'm loving what I'm doing and loving the support I have around me. I hope our fans are loving what we're putting on the field as well".

Did Vossy end up taking you out for dinner?
"No, he still hasn't answered my call, Vossy. We're due".

At any point, do you dare to dream about finals?
"I don't really know how to answer that. Leigh [Matthews] came in on Friday and spoke to the group. My whole life with Leigh, we won a lot of games but he didn't mention winning once and he didn't talk about outcomes very often at all and I'm that guy. I'm a process guy and we just keep doing what we're doing and the outcome will be what it will be. That's within our control. This is a tough competition. GWS today, you don't even need to look at their magnets to know this as good a team as they picked in a long time. There's no easy games in this competition and we've just got to be ready to take what the next step is and for us that's the Gold Coast next week".

What were the conversations when you took over. Were you taking over a side that was rebuilding and was it about patience. Is the rebuild done or is it a mini rebuild?
"You're always building. I think you're consistently building. We lose Jordy and we get a debutant. That's our story and we've done that all year. Guys get an opportunity. Our list, we know where it's at. We're playing good footy at the moment, we're gelling and playing a good system. I think we're always growing and always building in my eyes".

Agree we wont kick that bad again this year, that was a smashing and it should have been a 6 goal win.

If only that were true. We have kicked poorly for goal several times this year, some games it cost us (i.e. WCE), some we scrapped through. You can bet your bottom dollar it will happen several more times before season ends.
