So the secret is to have a teammate look at the clock and tell you when there is a set amount of time to go? It's a silly unworkable rule that is going to irritate by being umpired inconsistently.

Ultimately though, I'm glad they called play on. We were dominating. It's GWS who should have been looking to waste time to limp to the break before too much damage was done and reset there system at the break.i think we're silly to waste time when the game was at the stage it was.

people are making out that this is the first time an umpire has done it. I can remember it happening last year and soon after the rule was introduced. Players were just standing there looking at the clock and umpires would hurry them up. I must admit this is the first time that I've seen an umpire signal play on without much warning. He should have to say 5 seconds or something, which kind of defeats the whole 30 second thing. I think the AFL should probably drop the 30 seconds and make the players put on a show to get their delay ...like sock pulling up... or feigned concussion etc

I thought the Americans did not allow dual citizenship I know you have renounce your nationality when becoming US citizen.

I know someone who was born in australia and registered as an american and has travelled with two passports since they could travel indpendently. The only problem for Mason which he probably knows already is the the US tax people chase his money even if he earns it in australia

If it smells bad, it is bad imo.

What really got my goat is the umpire telling Sidey he was "taking the Mickey" and was being penalised for doing so, even though it's well within the rules to take his full 30 seconds. The umpire overstepped 'interpreting' the rules to 'twisting' the rules because of his personal bias or some other ego-driven thing.

If 30 seconds is not, in fact, 30 seconds then come out and say it for everyone. Otherwise it does look like a very unfair and unprofessional ruling.

Not sure how the umpire can have overstepped if as he said that’s how he’s directed to adjudicate. Has there been anything from the AFL saying it was wrong?

Yep basically agree with these. Coniglio back in form for them and Hogan votes. Does this mean Moore smashed again?

Elliott should have got votes.

Why would the AFL say it was wrong?

Don't think so. As he explained once you are seen to be milking the time rather than preparing for the shot at goal they have been instructed to call play on. Once Sidey looked at the countdown clock to see how much time left its considered milking

Yeah, it’s become an accepted norm though. Every player does it. It’s the change in interpretation that causes the confusion. I’d assume we’ll see a lot more of it over coming rounds.

I think they should just stop the clock until the player is running in.

well the question is why did they change the traditional way to do it

The other ridiculous call is run-up for a guy going for goal from the boundary.....and the contrast to someone kicking out of the back pocket. The first bloke gets no consideration at all and the backman gets an armchair ride. I saw a bloke have to shorten his run-up so much when he trying to kick a goal that he couldnt balance himself enough to kick it straight..

There is no rule that says the player must be allowed 30 seconds to kick. It’s entirely up to the umpire. This is the rule;

20.2 DISPOSAL FROM BEHIND THE MARK
(a) A Player who has been awarded a Mark or Free Kick shall be directed by a field Umpire to dispose of the football within a reasonable time in a direct line from The Mark to the centre of their Goal Line.
(b) If a Player does not dispose of the football within a reasonable time, or attempts to dispose of the football other than in a direct line over The Mark, the field Umpire shall call ‘Play On’ and the football shall immediately be in play.

EDIT: IMHO, one of the big problems in our game is that none of the commentators knows the rules.

It appears the coach didn’t know the rule too, going by his post match press conference.

I haven’t had a chance to see the footage again.

But it still doesn’t explain the rule being umpires need to be consistent. I understand that it’s a fait accompli, but they can’t choose when to and when not to allow the 30sec. Need to be consistent….

I don’t think it was but why wouldn’t they if it was? What’s to gain keeping that a secret?
If the kick had of been smothered there would be a lot more talk.

Yeah it was close, but it looked clear to me (only a few metres from the behind post). Plus I don’t think Murphy would have remonstrated so strongly and for as long if Moore didn’t get there.

Edit: replay here, behind the goal footage shows the footy deviate when Moore’s hand is near the ball. Nick Daicos questions it too. Like the Hawthorn one the ump guessed and guessed wrongly.

VAR again not used for something Obvious.

Reckon Hoskin and Elliott especially were hard done by. Adams lucky.

Thought it was a great effort by the players after the week they had. WHE right back in form and Jamie is just a star. ND smooth as a river pebble.

NO problems with duel citizenship in the US, unless you want you run a media company.
Murdoch renounced his Australian citizenship to gain licenses in the US.
Thank you for that reply, that is what made me think they did not allow dual citizenship I remembered Murdock had to renounce his citizenship not that that is a bad thing who would want him as a fellow countryman.
