I loved how Dunstall shut Roo down talking about needing to play Thilthorpe so we had a 2nd ruck as opposed to last week against North in which we played one ruck in ROB and a defender in Murray to chop out. Dunstall points out why would you play two players that can ruck when Melb didn't even have a ruck. You got the impression that Roo was directly involved in the decision and didn't like seeing Murray in the ruck. Murray was good in there btw. Dunstall shut him down by pointing out that playing one ruck without a backup seemed a smarter option this week against a team that didn't have a ruck. It was comedy gold. In fact Roo proved throughout the telecast to not possess the necessary football knowledge that a football director should have. The impression I got was that Dunstall thinks he's an idiot.

My opinion of Dunstall was always high and now it is into the stratosphere after that final sentence.

Smart man Dunstall, Roo is a dumb as they come.

We have huge small forward issues

We actually need to draft / or trade for some different ones but delist some of the ones we’ve got which will take time

Or teach the ones we have to play as small forwards should
Should also stop being so literal with the heading "Small forward" .Always feeling we need to maintain a useless midget quota each week.

Fair call, but I disagree that it's just talent. We could be better with existing players if our coaches had the faintest clue. Our mids are coached to fail.
Traits , talent , size

Schoenberg is one that runs thru stoppages , that clearance that lead to a goal was perfect example of what he adds . We desperately need him to take next step next year

The others lack the power and size to burst forward out of congestion but I’d love us to use more forward handball

Another reason I’d like Dawson to get some minutes in there to get bigger bodies in the rotation

2 things in my opinion they need to do and I don’t care how tall they are either

1. Help us create scores - whether it’s score assists , goals , score involvements . Basically a combo of all . Make us a higher scoring team

2. Pressure the fk out of the defenders to make it difficult for the ball to get to I50 at the other end . This usually requires speed and tackle intent

This is coaching too. We don't encourage our small forwards to play their natural games, they're coached to guard space, be in certain spots and concentrate firstly on defence. And we don't allow them to lead up and have leads honoured. We attack with a defensive strategy, being a small in our set up is hard work. It's tough for talls too.

I just reckon they aren’t much good so we will prob disagree but that’s fine

Sometimes we agree but still argue haha

I hope Schoenberg stays in. Had five centre clearances himself. Keays, Laird and Berry combined for six.

Bit fumbly at times as we all were but can tidy that up with some time & confidence

I reacon most of the Newchurch detractors dont even watch the SANFL games..

They just read others bewildering comments of Newchurch and regurgitate it.

I’ve watched every SANFL game live this year and even watched replays of them as well.

Newchurch has been bloody good in 90% of them and, in the couple of games he’s been quiet in like yesterdays, he’s still managed to get involved and had a hand in numerous goal assists in those games.

How anyone can be looking at the return we have been getting from Mchenry, murphy, Rowe and, at times, Rachele as our small forwards this year and be thinking that we shouldnt give Newchurch a run yet is beyond me.

There is literally nothing to f*n lose from putting Newchurch in the side for a solid block of games in a row.

He shouldve come in for the West coast game.

Murphy should never play another AFL game for the club again.

Rachele looks completely lost at the moment

Mchenry aint a small forwards a-hole.

Rowe.. i mean, if anyone wants to go on about a player that goes missing for long periods, look no further than little Rowe.

We are “supposedly” rebuilding.. yet the small forward on the list with a shitload of speed, x-factor, skill and goal sense cant get a run and instead we continue to play proven failures in front of him because he’s apparently not ready?.. fk me..

I haven't seen much SANFL, so wondering if he's keeping his opponent boundary side enough?

Option 2 is what drives me mental with this whole specialist pressure forward theory.

Chasing and taking has to be one of the most simple fundamentals of the game to perform. So piss those non-scoring "defensive pressure"entities right off out if the forward line and simple teach the remaining forwards to stop looking at themselves on the big screen and start chasing/tackling when they haven't got the ball.

I think Doedees and Smiths form has resulted in us putting our best player back to mop up and to use his elite disposal.

We have 2 key defenders in the past few weeks so there is no excuse for him not being able to play off his opponent and take some intercept marks. Like both May and Lever did for Melbourne.

Doedees disposal is too poor for him to be our main rebounding man in defence anyhow.

So we traded in Dawson to replace Doedee.

Net result, after Seeds concussion issues is a negative in terms of evolving the team.

Smith is hugely off the boil , actually played like he was a rabbit in spot light . Zero composure yesterday like he’d never seen that much pressure in a game before
Has been that way since his head knock.

Prior he was playing decent football.

Agree , we have many holes in our list and another one is a ball user off half back while Dawson plays wing , mid ; etc
Jones could also become a top damaging HB.

Not good enough in 360 degree play to be a mid, but has some great traits to play the up and down HB role.

Rowe has been in pretty good form against the weaker sides but when the heat goes up like a high pressure game yesterday was he’s found wanting

Not enough speed , intensity , contest , tackle , brilliance

Very solid and clever when the game isn’t quite as hot
Brayshaw showed him up in the 1st contest as a quicker & bigger opponent.

His lack of speed is a problem.

I’ve been a huge fan since watching him as a 17 yo but im losing faith

His 3rd QTR turnover that cost momentum had me so frustrated , I know one moment isn’t important but it’s a pattern

I felt this last year.

But the stat watchers shouted me down as he was getting great metres gained stat. A useless metric, look at Hall's game last week.

That is gone now.

Even without size they can still run forward and remove the tackling player from the equation and creat gaps where their teammates can receive and run through. Lyons wasn't big bodied and he could get through. Hately in there more would help, he's a junior version of the big brutes, but he'll get through enough to release teammates here and there.

I accept that this midfield and small forward group will never combine to be a contending group, but with proper coaching philosophies and strategies, they could be quite a bit better. Nix and VB must go.

Watching the replay now and boy we got a dream run from the umpires

Felt like we got plenty of freebies at the game but seeing it back, wow
Was pleased how the Umpires let the game go for most of the night... more like they used to.

But, yes we got the better off them.
