Thoughts on Salem out, Rivers in?

I feel like Bowey is in better form than Salo.

Both are out of form but my preference is to drop Bowey.

I get the feeling Salem will click into form eventually over the coming weeks, but I think Bowey just needs a week off and some time in the seconds.

probably the worst ~30 possession game ive ever seen last night from Dunstan.
Trust me, I'm not a huge fan at all, but if Oliver misses he's first in line. Unless Goody actually changes things up and goes with Harmes, ANB or Salem in the middle? I'm sure he had Kozzy in the first centre bounce of every quarter last year. Or was i imagining it? Would love him to change things up a bit, but Dunstan is as good as guaranteed a spot of Oliver misses.

How would you feel being JVR watching spuds like Ben Brown take your spot in the team. It's an absolute personal insult to JVR that they don't think he is better than Ben Brown.
Who? Hasn’t even played a game FFS.

Best 22 is pretty close. What’s the deal with Rivers? Wouldn’t mind him in if he is fit. McDonald back will be nice.

Nothing really else needs to happen. They just need to play a bit better.

What’s wrong with the game plan do you think?

Too predictable mainly. But also, too slow, too scared to give up a score/too defensive. Doesn't allow players to flourish for the most part.

If teams kick 10 goals vs us we are pretty much doomed, the inability to change gears and maintain it in game this year is night and day from last year. We cant stop teams once they get a run on, no deficit ever seemed insurmountable last year, now it feels like if we fall 3 goals behind its curtains.

Agree. We're playing the %s in terms of what will be least likely to concede a score by going long and slow down the line, but unless we can get a score ourselves it's kinda moot. Good teams will back themselves to go through us, and have been, so we can't just rely on grinding out a 70-55 result each week.
We've got some great offensive weapons if we're willing to use them and accept that we'll (probably) be scored against more often

One thing I find bullshit is this whole everyone trains 2 roles rhetoric. Brayshaw seems to be the only one who can actually play multiple roles. Salem, Bowey, Pig dont leave defence, ANB Spargo and Kozzy don't leave the front half. Jordan and Langdon stay wide. Viney and Oliver stay middle.

I don't want us to throw out the gameplan every week. But why not drop Gawn behind the ball and send Petty forward for a quarter. Why not throw Kozzy in the middle? Send Salem to the wing and have him concentrating on switching and hitting the corridor. Gus on ball, Trac one out in the goals?
These don't have to work but this game especially it felt like Geelongs game plan and system had us figured out so we needed to change.
I had always assumed that the training for two roles wasn’t really intended so we could switch people around when the team doesn’t perform, or utilise some non-existent ‘plan B’ mid game (I just don’t think teams really work like that).

I thought the chief reason for having people train two roles was to learn more about how other players function, in order to defend better - like Clarko switching forwards with backs in practice matches, and if the worst happens have some options for injuries. We have had times where we had lots of people out from a particular line, and if there is insufficient depth, or your depth isn’t yet ready, then someone has to go back and pretend to be hibbo or whatever.

We’re playing like a golfer who’s leading the Masters after 2 rounds and have decided that we just need to make pars for the last 36 holes to win.

Five other teams out here attacking pins trying to make eagles and we just carry on laying up cos we think 72 is a winning score

excellent analogy. 🎓

If Oliver is out, I think we need to play Gawn 70% deep full forward and have Jackson ruck the majority. We need more mobility at the bounce and Gawn can take attention away from Brown.

Use Gawn as a decoy and hit Fritta and Brown in space because Allir will sit in front of Gawn

Couldn't agree more.

Well put

Gawn needs to definitely go forward as Topkent stated. Jackson is absolutely more than capable of rucking and swapping with him when needed. We aren’t getting anything from Brown and clearly we won’t pick Weidemann who looks well and truly on the outer. We look like we are itching for McDonald due to our woes up forward.

We simply need to just win the ball in the middle. I can’t say it more plainly. Ball and clearance game is critical with an aggressive mindset to pressure and harass like we did last year. I don’t think there’s anything more to it. Keep the pressure off the backline who are getting swamped.

Ultimately, just remind the team how good it was to win the flag last year and get that mindset back. Our best footy urinates on everyone else. End of story.

If Oliver is out who takes his spot in the midfield is my main concern.

Brayshaw would be the obvious candidate but he is so good down back

$3.05 for Port to win seems way overs to me

I'm not so worried, Trac, Harmes and Sparrow will just take more minutes. Either we bring in Chandler or Laurie and move Trac and Sparrow on ball or we bring in Rivers which means Brayshaw goes into the middle but I doubt we mess with Gus.
