Would Heath Shaw be better as a Midfielder?

He's ready to take the step, but at the minute he is dominating as one of the best small defenders in the game...would be AA back pocket at the minute.

I can't wait for him to get to the midfield full time.....to see him use that pace out of the middle and run onto goal.....he could develop into one of the very best in the league with his combination of pace, skill, toughness and footy nous.

I hope we are asking the question of why we took so long to send him to the centre.

If I was Mick, I would leave him where he is, at half back.

No reason to change something that is proving to be so effective, at most give him a few minutes in the midfield every now and then.

But I can't see him playing full time midfield, leave it to Pendles and Co.

Best way to find out is play him there for a month. Right now MM would be reluctant to change a winning formula. If we are getting done I’d hope he’d try it but I have my doubts. Personally I think it is vital that he is tried in the midfield well and truly before the finals.

It's pretty hard to be better than he currently is, although we should at least give him some gametime in the midfield before the season's out. He couldn't do any worse. If he has ambitions to captain the team someday he must rotate on the ball. Not like we're starving for half-back flankers with the likes of Tyson Goldsack and Harry O'Brien in the team this weekend.

This has been done to death, may happen but he has played less than 40 games and is giving as much momentum as a gun midfielder from HBF, so why change the 'mojo', especially with the obvious good vibes that are happening between him and Rhyce and the fact that the midfield rotations are holding their own. May be a tactic if getting smashed midfield in a do or die match, but otherwise only a 'hail mary' type rotation.

Agree with that, he's just playing too well in defence at present. I'd suggest his brother instead get moved midfield. His form is just as good, he has more pace, and the backline would not miss him as much.

He couldn't be that much better than he currently is...

I'm in the "why fold a winning hand?" camp.
Do you want to win the hand or the whole prize?

It is enough reason that we might need him in a different role in September but if you need more how about we have a lot of HBF’s but not enough impact midfielders? If nothing else, I can’t see the harm is trying these things and it has long frustrated me that MM is reluctant.

Leave him in the backline hes dominating and is a real playmaker. To be honest I think the backline is his best position he can read the ball coming towards him, which is why he is so effective. Chad Cornes also has this ability its just he can't actually play on someone and stop them. Heath however has the capacity to do both.

Chad Cornes also goes into the midfield at times and can carve them up.

haha very good point MarkT, I dunno though I just have a feeling that putting Heath in the guts will ruin him. Most likely my own insecurities. but I just don't see the point of rushing someone out of a position they clearly play very well.

All in good time with H.Shaw. We were ready to move him into the midfield against Richmond but he got tagged heavily and our backline was in shambles. With Clement out we need his leadership and ability to order the troops around. As well as his calm thinking, ability to win contests and spot a taget.

Fair point about Clement being out at the moment.
Some time this year I'd like to test some September options. I felt we needed to have done that in 2003.
