SOMETHING’S GOTTA CHANGE FOR MAX

YOU have to admire St Kilda coach Brett Ratten’s defence of young gun Max King after his 0.5 went a long way to all but closing the door on the club’s finals hopes.

He wasn’t the only Saint to spray the Sherrin, but he was the worst offender.

King will be a star, but he has a flaw that if he can’t fix soon, could slow his development from talented young player into a bonafide superstar.

The 22-year-old’s goal kicking technique at times is a massive concern. He gets away with it on occasions, but on nights like Friday, it is painful to watch, especially for Saints fans.

According to a former member of the “Yips Are Getting Bigger Club” in Cam Mooney, King must confront those demons sooner rather than later.

The World According to Rowan Dean. Stream Tues-Thurs 9pm AEST on Sky News.

“He (King) should be an 800-goal-kicker before the end of his career … but he is going to leave 300 goals on the table if he doesn’t get it right,” Mooney said on Fox Footy.

“I can see it in his eyes and in his face. You can see it in his action when he is walking in. You can see his face is almost drained. He was nervous, throwing the ball around.”

Ratten said King worked tirelessly on his craft, with Saints assistant coach and former Hawk great Jarryd Roughead giving him great assistance.

In May last year King asked the club if he could have a private goal-kicking session with his former Haileybury coach and ex-Essendon sharpshooter Matthew Lloyd.

The club told him they wanted him to keep it inhouse, which Ratten said post-game on Friday night wouldn’t change.

But as much belief as the Saints have in their internal teachings, what’s the harm in King speaking to a few other former stars outside the club over the summer months to learn from their experiences.

A chat with Lloyd is an obvious one. Mooney says King could benefit from a postseason coffee with Tom Hawkins, who cured his yips. Or maybe a catch-up with that other Saints’ No.12, Nick Riewoldt.

Or perhaps even a discussion with one of the most accurate kicks in the history of the game, former Saint/Swan Tony Lockett.

Where’s the harm in that?

Wayne Carey was even more brutal on Triple M: “All these guys are willing to help out. If Nick Riewoldt (or) Matty Lloyd’s coming to Max King and the club’s saying ‘No, we don’t want your help’, that’s bordering on stupidity.”

AFL MUST TIGHTEN HEAD-HIGH RULES IN ‘23

BRAD Crouch can be thankful Darcy Gardiner wasn’t concussed in the incident on Friday night after his late bump.

It came less than 24 hours after a marathon appeals board hearing overturned Patrick Cripps’ two-game ban.

The two incidents were vastly different given the ball was still in the contest when Callum Ah Chee was impacted by Cripps, while Gardiner had already disposed of it when Crouch cannoned into him.

But even though Gardiner played out the game - unlike Ah Chee - it wasn’t the look the AFL wanted after a tough and confusing week.

David King called the AFL “lost” on the head-high contact controversy while Garry Lyon said the issue had become “a farce”.

Greater clarity is needed for 2023 to protect the heads of players.

While the AFL has forecast changes to its match review guidelines for next season, it must clear up the mess by hardening the rules around collisions and head high contact - or it runs the risk of again being accused of “rhetoric” in its health and safety concerns.

I heard Mooney say this, and as one who’s been there, he is spot on.
The arrogance of a club who has nothing to be arrogant about, in spurning outside help for the kingpin ( pun intended) of our club, is nothing short of astounding.

Let’s damage the kid mentally, why not? 🤬

Mooney's advice last night was to work directly with Roughhead and no one else. Said he didn't need multiple people weighing into his issues and that typically does more harm when everyone try to give you conflicting advice.

So yes he was spot on.

Well I did not hear it that way…but it’s obviously not working, is it?

Problem is, the club don’t want it.

It has before. Unfortunly he is having a bad patch.

Would have to be pretty arrogant to turn down the advice of someone who has been there because it doesn't support the Llyod obsession.
Nobody says it has to be Lloyd.
But to double down on this external assistance out of hand when the kid is obviously struggling smacks of arrogance.

Do we want this to become a burden around his neck, or do we want the best for both a young player and his club. It’s not like King himself didn’t ask for the help in the first place.

I support the club in a lot of things, but that doesn’t mean every decision they make is always correct, and I don’t support this one.

About 100 posts on this board in the last 24 hours mentioning Lloyd with King's goal kicking gave off a different impression.

Obviously no one wants it to become a bigger problem and wants what is best for Max. He asked for help 18 months ago, and got it from Roughead with a successful outcome. Maybe he wants to try same method of regaining his confidence and re-training his routine first. And if he was happy with the process last time, why add extra voices into the process given Mooney has stated that can make it more confusing for the person.

Well, so be it, looks like that’s the way it’s going to be so I’ll be praying it works. And that I look like a goose for suggesting otherwise.

Honestly, they should be giving a clip to any player in the vicinity who didn’t think to go up to him and have a calming word in his ear after he missed the first. Leader, or first year player - they missed a trick.

Lack of leadership and mental fragility all in one. Two major issues that need fixing over the next 6 months.

That was the most damning thing of the night.

Same thing happened with Higgins in the infamous Sydney game. Keep rushing every shot more and more as he missed, and not one leader took it upon themselves to help calm him down.

King's kicking will improve but still a lot of question marks on whether the overall leadership will.

Especially Membrey, should of got over to King and said "Don't worry about it, you will get the next one." Or something to relax Max.

Don’t know why it’s left to them though. Can’t remember where Steele and Membrey were, and Wilkie was obviously down back, but what’s to stop any of the 17 others on the ground from having a quick word?

Don’t know how you fix the fragility, bar recruiting some figjam kids.
Not saying Windy and Owens are, but they don’t seem fazed by much. Owens winning clearances in the ruck, Wendy tagging, and beating, some big names.

Pay out the arse for a top tier sports psychologist.

We are just a dumb football club and Max Kings goal kicking will never improve with whatever they are doing there as it’s clearly not working. To have Lloyd wanting to help and King wants Lloyd to help yet then club says no well we deserve the result we get.

Lloyd was pointing out Max's technical flaws on the Sunday Footy Show and what he needs to do to fix them. I wish he would get the chance to work with Max over the off season as whoever is working with him at St Kilda isn't fixing them, he's still got the same flaws he has had since he's been there.

What about his brother for f$&ks sake . He’s a decent kick for goal isn’t he? How does their technique compare?
The club obviously can’t stop him from going to the local park with his brother or after Xmas lunch maybe .
Pretty sure that would be a breach of his contract.

If Matthew Lloyd was any good at coaching, he’d be a senior coach by now, wouldn’t you think ?

The issue with King is less his technique, but more his fragile head. He has the talent to be a very good forward but appears to not have the mindset to be a great forward, he doesn’t really tackle or chase and shows little to no winning attitude, he hangs his head very quickly and asking for his school coach (Lloyd) may indicate that he feels uncomfortable in the tough grown up AFL world.

He will (hopefully) grow into his role with us supporters and he himself accepting that he alone will not be our saviour, but (hopefully) will be an important part of our future success.

And please … show some respect to Jarryd Roughead, not only a great forward himself but also (unlike others mentioned that King should seek help from) a great person with empathy and true willingness to coach without mainly wanting to be in the spotlight himself.

Nothing wrong with the coaching, give King some time and cuddles and move him around if need be (be it as a defender to gain confidence of some cheap marks and possessions) or even in the VFL to demonstrate that we’re more than Max King and a few other players.

It’s clearly a combo of both, as every star foward has highlighted in the media for 12 months.

Teaching a skill is very different from coaching a team. No one asked him to coach the team.

Its not so much about Lloyd, its the principle of the club refusing to accept that some sort of outside help could possibly be helpful and that maybe they don’t have all the answers.

Roughhead was a great forward, no doubt, but if he’s been the one tasked to help Max, it’s obviously not working.
