If you were the list manager, who would you move on and why, what type of player, as in characteristics, would you look to acquire through the draft/trade and why

Draft wise, depends who is there, someone who is going to impact fairly early as we are in our window now. Trade wise, it's strictly about upgrades on who we have.

Depends on the level of talent big time as to what types we pick up. Looking at our list, we could be short a strong bodied inside mid. Kennedy and Hewett out, this may be a problem going forward, it's weakened us a bit. Dow is not that sort of player, Setterfield has to step up in this role for us. Carrol not this sort of player yet. Kemp possibly develops into this. It's hard but I would love a hard hitting, powerful inside mid who has the mindset for the defensive stuff. Unless we think we have players coming on this is a need for us. We probably won't go for a mid as it's not high on our list but it's up there IMO.

Then there is the small defender role. Docherty, Williams and Saad are our cream but lose one and we drop off. Williamson gone, no doubt he would have got games in the second half of the season. Stocker is going ok but does not strike me as that damaging two way running small defender you have to be. Could that change? Boyd showed some potential but in my eyes is unproven still. The small defender who can run both ways, hurt opposition on the overlap but also lock down is gold, can't win it without them and IMO 3 is the magic number. We have 3 but lose one and we have issues.

Winger is a big one for us. We are developing some and they are going ok. We have some potential there, Cuningham next season maybe, but it's a position of need for us. No certainty's there yet. With our best 22 on the park, wing is probably the weakest link for us. A winger who is an elite runner, good in the contests, good with pressure and can deliver the ball is what we would want.

It's a tough one, we still have plenty of needs. A mature ruckman and backup tall forward depth would be handy for us as well.

Really does come down to quality, we need to bring in players who will displace who we already have. I have wingman as number one IMO. You look at how Melbourne just went out and got Langford, that's what we need to do.

Mature ruck on the cheap for a year or two would be another priority for me. A tall utility is up there, someone who can go forward and back and potentially be best 22. For us he is already on the list, that's McDonald, what he is is an important need for us but can we get him going again? He had an operation, plenty of players have and have come back from that but it takes time, Ange Christou for example. I'd love to bring in a lower set, quick and strong inside mid, it's not a massive need but with injuries it becomes one.

It really becomes about quality, if there are not quality wingers available then we leave it for another year.

I think Dow is the obvious trade option but what may put a hold on that is that we need to have something worth while coming back the other way. Who else goes out depends who else is coming in. If we pick up a winger then O'Brien or Cottrell would options however I don't think they would return enough to warrant us doing that and it weakens our depth. If we bring in a quality smaller defender then Stocker becomes a trade option. Apart from that I don't see us trading anyone else out.

Ideal situation is that we turn Dow into the wingman that we need (trade wise), pick up someone like Goldstein for a couple of years who gives us another best 22 ruckman, use our first pick in the draft to take a best available type, maybe an attacking smaller defender or strong bodied onballer.

We are certainly not he finished product by a long way. Durdin if good defensive backup. DeKoning will be tall forward backup, I think he will develop this side of his game. If we can get McDonald going this is huge for us because he's exactly what we need on our list.

Oliver Hollands looks like a good fit for Carlton who is likely to be drafted mid to late first round.

Inside mid that gets his own ball??

Surely there is 1 rangy fast wingman who lives to run and carry and kick well????

That’s what we need in the draft…

*see Scott Camporeale

Where do you see him playing? Not sure our need is for another mid-sized defender? And not for our first round pick either - should be available still at our second round pick?
I can see him playing the Tom Stewart/ Nick Vlastuin style roles.
Draft is for the future, Mgov and Newman have been covering those roles atm. In 2 years time this guy will go straight past them. In 5 years he could be upper level in the comp.

on talent but it's a big IF. understudy needs to be ready to step in so C+ and durability better than B and perennially injured.

For sure. If there's any doubt over the injury or his professionalism then we shouldn't be keeping him around.

I've said my piece re: durability previously. We can't afford to hang on to too many who can't get on the park or else we risk stagnating badly. North Melbourne did it and fell in a heap - we're much more progressed than they were, but the danger is still there.

That's certainly an optimistic take. 3 active games in two years.

We already carry a perpetually unavailable Marchbank, and rarely. sighted Cuningham, Williams, Martin and McGovern. Never say never, but I would be surprised.

Incredibly odd we chose him over Levi.
Injury prone response above.

Re: Levi, I am fully supportive of the move to part ways. Sure we could have used him at times throughout the year, but I think for the benefit of both parties we had to let him go. He was a great servant of the club, but he had run his race here. At some point you have to rip the bandaid off.

Should we have a separate Draft Thread?

Yes - feel free to start one. Check that we don't have one already - I have a vague recollection that we may, but given I also mod the DTFA board, things get a bit muddled...

Sorry long read, too much time on my hands.

As a keen draft researcher, I am loving the permutations we are considering for the upcoming draft and trade period. The obvious give our impending salary cap pressures is to hit the draft for generation next in the key position area.

We do, however, on face value have our key pillars in place for 6-10 years with Curnow, McKay, Weitering and Young. They are supported by seemingly best 22 hybrid and third talls De Koning, Silvagni, McGovern and Marchbank, while seemingly trying to find a way to shoehorn Kemp in to the side. McGovern is the only one on the wrong side of 25.

We currently have McDonald, a veteran of 86 games at 26 years old, who has disappointed with two years of highly promising early season cameos followed by crickets for 90% of the playing season due to a back complaint. After trying to “manage” the complaint for a year and a half, he was sent for surgery to correct the issue. Plenty of positive reports emanating from the club following surgery and reported to be hounding our S&C group to rejoin training group. He was our first choice to partner Weiters and was lauded a leader of the defence at the start of the season, if the operation was successful, he is a seasoned KPP, who can play both ends and pinch hit in the ruck. He is a key to our list management strategy this off season. Similarly Sam Durdin has settled in to our twos as an integral piece after his mid season acquisition as a key defensive option. When called upon, he was better than adequate given his lack of familiarity with the group. Both OMac and Sam are on minimum chips and could be conceivably kept there for another couple of years at negligible cost. While keeping both may be surplus, both have real value and could in fact give trade collateral down the track if they play to potential.

McAsey has been clearly a “failure” at Adelaide. He did, however, have a very promising first season, showing good glimpses at both ends. Homesickness, Covid lockdowns, family illness with out the ability to assist, all can and clearly did contribute to his lack of output. Some Crows supporters refute the consensus he hasn’t done enough for recall. Has been played forward of late with some multiple goal games. There is plenty of ammunition to expect a substantial improvement with a return to Victoria for the 21 year old. If we do due diligence, I am happy to trade him in to the group. A “Clayton’s” draftee for those old enough to understand the reference.

Many are perplexed at the lack of opportunity given to Lachlan Sholl at Adelaide. 22 yo twice Rising Star nominee. Running machine with superb dual sided disposal. Rumoured to be another version of our own outside type O’Brien, I must say, my viewing did not support this. If he is available, I am very much in favour. I understand Nicks playing more inside types on the wing to fast track their development, but I am astounded Sholl who has had high disposal games (30+) is not getting a go. He is either on the outer or the victim of a pre conceived plan to fast track others, with a “promise” of games down the track. He is absolutely good enough to warrant our interest.

This draft class is not looking deep for key position players Cadman and Jefferson lead the forwards, but probably won’t get to us being likely top 10. Busslinger the top 10 KPD, Hayes is probably a first rounder and is a prolific interceptor. I wonder about his pace, or lack of it to counter leading forwards. Hybrid forward/ruck Keeler is a talent, but is probably the most questionable on attitude of the touted first rounders. There are some more speculative KPP types, I really like Phoenix Foster as a value forward/ruck, is a combine invitee but not featuring on the more public “phantoms”. Hard to know where he goes, second round to late. I don’t discount some of the second tier talls or hybrid types like Hustwaite, but question the need to reach for a “premium” tall if we are indeed looking at adding McAsey as a key position option.

We don’t need generation next for a few more years, so drafting a KPP is not essential. Extra depth certainly is essential. We need a forward option in the twos. A fit OMac could be that, McAsey would be able to play forward, as would Durdin, although I see him primarily defender, more so than the other two. I am wondering how our hierarchy sees the development of Dom Akuei as a key/third tall, he does some good things, but struggles to stay in the game. While it would lead to a feast after the famine, I would not be against having them all for a year or two and drafting a forward/ruck kid like Foster.

I could live with trading in with McAsey and Sholl.
Drafting Oliver Hollands with our first as a pacy balanced to outside mid, who could start his career as a wing option, but ultimately adds some zest to our midfield group. Drafting a forward/ruck like Foster with a later pick although “happy” to consider other options. (If Sholl doesn’t happen Darcy Edmends seems a good wing option)
Elevating rookies Owies plus Boyd and/or Mirkov (or O’Brien/Cottrell who would have longer rookie eligibility).

I am sure plenty reading this would have written off McDonald, but we shouldn’t throw out the baby with the bath water if his back issues are fixed.

Edit: Apologies for any confusion mixing up Phoenix Foster and Phoenix Spicer. Uncommon name and sometimes addled ageing brain. Fixed now, I hope.

My wish list for the offseason list and contract wise -
1. Get Charlie, Harry and TDK signed up
2. keep our first pick and go to the draft
3. McAsey, Blake Acres to fill our need for a wing, and this is probably not possible but Jack Gunston, I feel we need a experienced forward to help Charlie and Harry, brings leadership quality. Just my opinion, Probably not possibly money wise either and if Clarko goes to Essendon he will probably follow him

McDonald has had various back issues across something like 4 seasons, and you want to keep him? He's done.

Durdin gets a maybe, but I'd rather we just start acquiring and drafting. From an athletic standpoint, there should be much better options out there in the DFA market and towards the back of the draft, plenty of them with football ability to work with.

That’s why I put a question mark re McDonald. Probably delist then get him to train with us and add him onto the list if he makes it through the pre season ok.

That is exactly what should be done, aside from giving us the chance to assess him through pre season, it restarts his rookie three year window, giving a huge bonus for list management purposes. After this off season, list changes will be minimal for many years. We currently have Owies, Boyd, Mirkov, O’Brien and Cottrell likely to need upgrading over next three seasons. We can get creative moving a couple of main list players to the rookie list over that period to “fudge” the books providing league protocols, which vary annually it would seem, allow.

Zurhaar is involved in at least one, if not multiple, business venture(s) with Cripps (allegedly).

As much as I'm not a fan, I wouldn't be entirely shocked to see it happen.

Has there ever even been any indication of off-field drama with the guy? Nothing comes to my mind.

Seems people see the on-field aggression and assume he's a dickhead.
Raw, aggressive, sometimes “clumsy” and a bit inconsistent doesn’t add up to dick head. I don’t see him as being within our financial reach realistically, particularly while Martin is in the mix, but a decent player with a real point of difference.

We need more snarl, aggression and edge in our team. I reckon Zurhaar would be fantastic.

I'm sick of our boy scouts getting pushed around and bullied.
Not sure that there us any team that has "pushed around and bullied" us this year. Fremantle complained that we targeted Fyth. Everyone complained that Cripps bullied Ah Chee.

Be interested to hear who has pushed us around and bullied us.

Richmond scragged, bumped and needled us. The Saints came at us with heat and we crumbled. Adelaide utterly hunted us. Geelong manhandled us without any fear of repercussion.

I think 17 other teams all quietly feel like they're a show against the Blues if they bring heat and aggro. We're pussycats.

I reckon there's no fear whatsoever of Carlton.

I'm sure a straw poll of intercept defenders around the league of "who would you least like to drop back into the hole in front of? a) J Cameron, b) H McKay, c) L Franklin, d) T Lynch" would get no "b" responses. There's no intimidation. We don't have a tagger that drives an opposition star mid mental. Compared to other good teams we're generally easy to play against - which is why so many weak teams have their best day of the season against us.

It's a topic that's been covered plenty of times before, but I remain convinced that Carlton is altogether too nice, and a few guys with a bit more edge would make a big difference. Not talentless goons, but guys who take the body, with intent, and can generally make an opposition's day lousy.
