Is he a 3rd tall (more hybrid defender like grimes (or stratts) or interceptor like lever than attacking player like Sicily) or a genuine kpd? Feels more like a 3rd tall looking at his frame.

Sam also described him as a 3rd tall on the radio.

Has a lot of his game to round out either way (either needs a heap of size/core strength and composure as a kpd or a lot more ability to play on smalls or have offensive impact as a 3rd tall).

At the moment he seems to be a Grimes hybrid type.
Hasn’t been let off the leash in an offensive sense because we have so many others in the back half that we have entrusted to provide us with the rebound

Will be very very good in a year or two. Goes back with the flight to a truly unhinged extent - good example today and the other one that stands out was against the Suns in a contest where Chol got hurt.

He’s a psycho - has done this 4 or 5 times now.

If DGB is supposed to be our primary tall defender in the years to come then he is probably going to have days when he struggles with the match up. The new generation of Forwards are over 200cms (such as king twins).. and are getting up to 210cms (Darcy). DGB is recorded as being 2 to 3 cms taller than Ned Long. But when DGB is on the ground and he stands next to a player of around 196cms he looks shorter than them. We know some clubs hide their players true height. He also doesn't have the body mass of a Jeka or a McGovern or a May to easily move a tall forward off their line. And he hasn't got jumping springs in his legs of a Lever or Gibcus. And he hasn't got the speed off the mark of a Rance or Fletcher.

He was good today on Norton. His best game so far.

Ned Long is listed on our website as 194cm, DGB is listed as being 195cm. So, yes, that’s probably why he looks shorter than a player who is 196cm.

He didn't play on Naughton btw x

DGB did OK when covering Utilities, and he was massively outsized in those contests, not to mention in the games played column.

But as above - wasn't he on that short blonde dude?

2nd year tall doesn't have the body mass of seasoned players who have won all Australians in Gibbous and Lever? Hold the phone!

Athletically he compared to Rance favorably during testing. That was his draft year comparison because he does have that superior athletic traits to go with his natural ability to read the game and mark the ball.

I think you're overestimating the importance of him being 4cm taller. Sicily regularly beats players 10cm or more taller than him.

But mainly: DGB is at the end of his second year. He played, what 5 games last year?

Going after our own players a little early on this board of late.

They described Buddy as a half-forward flanker until his 4th season or so.
DGB will be fine. We don't even need him to be our main KPD any longer, now that we've got Blanck.

That is massively astute point - how often were we told Buddy plays like a flanker... he'll only ever be a flanker playing KP etc. I must have read that a hundred times or more in the Age and Hun.

When they tried to bulk Bud up more, it affected his game badly short term. DGB bulked up a lot from last year it's worth pointing out. The trick is to do it in a way you don't lose athleticism. Usually means a slow burn.

Shades of Moore against Gold Coast, a breakout game to end the year, DGB has insane intensity and with a body that keen keep up with his mind it will be something special.

Still think he is the best tall from that draft

Love DGB and it will be interesting watching the progress of the top 10 talls from his draft. You'd have to say JUH tracking slightly ahead at this stage.

True, he was the consensus first pick in the draft and lauded as a generational talent though. He also had a slightly more mature frame.

But they all take time, even the slam dunks like JUH.

Think we can now all agree that the talent is there, and there has never been any concerns on his work ethic.

He just needs time for his body to get to standard physically and aerobically. Patience.
Literally found this thread to echo this sentiment.

Someone had to say it:

After that game, the DGB doubters need to be convinced and check their synicisms at the door. He's a gun. He's ahead of schedule. And he's part of our next Premiership challenging team.

They have deliberately spent the year teaching him to defend on some good forwards to improve his overall game. We know he is elite at intercepts and his field kicking / decision making is good. He could be anything once his game has fully developed.

Exactly, it's all part of his apprenticeship IMO.

We know his strengths are backing himself, peeling off, and attacking the ball with reckless abandon. Now they're trying to teach him to lock down and learn the dour side of defending.

Once he packs on guy kegs and puts it all together he will be the ultimate team defender.
