I don't say this as a joke and I don't want people to think I'm exaggerating.

In no uncertain terms if Leon Cameron is the head coach of the Essendon Football Club next I will be resigning as a fan and supporter of the club until such a time passes that he is no longer associated with us.

He is without a doubt one of the worst coaches I've ever seen. Beat one of the most talented lists assembled in the last decade into pure mediocrity. He derailed at least two years of Cogs career with how he handled his transition to captain + subsequent role shifts. He has no real game plan and does not teach any hard nosed defensive or pressure work which we desperately need. How he lasted as long as he did at GWS is honestly a surprise.

I'd be worried if he even made it to a serious list of contenders - would just show how far we are from making good decisions as a club.
Exactly right. All he had to do was roll the balls out and tell them what time they had to be at the ground. I once asked one of their players if they ever had a plan B when things weren’t going right. His reply was I don’t even know what plan A is. The media is making him out to be a guru but it doesn’t matter how he is portrayed by them. He can’t coach.

“Should not” no, but he’s pretty committed to women’s footy. Coaching girls is apparently a bit different, even though the game is basically the same.
Slower pace and shorter kicking gives more time and ability to set up the ground.

The Carlton game last year, filmed from up higher, showed how good his system was. Every stoppage was like reading ahead in a choose your own adventure book, they could close down space for the opposition and open up a paddock to themselves.

Thought this was a bit of a different take. Brereton talking about charisma as an indicator of a particular skill set that coaches need to have — to manage and inspire people.

He suggests that it might be the difference between a successful senior coach and someone whose best role is as part of a team as an assistant.

I don’t know if I agree with it exactly, perhaps it’s more important in the club politics (and keeping your job) than the actual coaching. But it’s interesting to contemplate.

Makes me think about the other charismatic people at the club and if they’re potentially (unintentionally?) causing problems if they have that skill set/influence/clout that the coach doesn’t.

Ah yes, bowing to the whims of fans who have no real insight into coaching - the most proper of proper processes

Wait, since when did the club start reading bigfooty and using it as input into their decision process? No wonder we're so shit. 🙄

Maybe because he kept making and winning finals despite an injury list longer than you arm and players being poached every year.

Did you watch making their mark? They extended his contact in the middle of that disaster and then let him coach another two years... How you can look at that and think this person is in a position to be at the helm of our club given the situation were in...🤷‍♂️

Yes I did. The fact is he still won finals despite having injuries to key players all the time and having players coming and going. Did he extend his own contract ? I have not said I wanted him to coach us. Please point out where I said that ! Have simply said he had a lot going against him at various stages and he was not as bad as a lot of people say he is.

He came across as a massive nutcase in that series. Don't want him anywhere near Essendon.

Mahoney has spun the 'experience' term now

Basically saying were open to anyone that has experience in any role at AFL level. Certainly would be good for someone like Yze
Yep I just saw a clip of it in a Sunday footy show tweet, it’s from an ABC Sport interview which I can’t get the direct podcast link for.

Best I’ve found is a link to the entire show (1h).

Skimmed forward, Mahoney interview starts at 32.35 but I don’t have time to actually listen to it now anymore because it took so damned long to track it down.

Something about experienced footy people (e.g. Fagan) or people who’ve been around it a long time without actually being a senior coach before.

So they had to walk back the experienced senior coach line due to the limit on those options from the sounds?

Yze and Hird are now equal favourites at $4.00 each. Lyon is $4.33.

I just can’t see Hird getting the gig with his baggage. I’m quite confident it won’t happen.

I’d be very happy with Yze or Lyon. Lyon has the runs on the board but Yze will likely have fresher ideas and motivation to succeed. My one fear with very senior coaches is that they end up like malthouse, worsfold, etc and may lack motivation to seek fresh/good ideas.

Why Yze? How’s his background any different to Rutten?
The difference would be he went through a proper process and was appointed by an external panel, he won’t have 12 months of handover or a bunch of idiots in the background trying to cover their arses as their main priority. He won’t be coaching in a 1 in 100 years pandemic lockdown situation, and hopefully he’d also have the full support of the club, the board, the coteries and the members behind him - financial and moral.

He also has over 10 years experience in two different successful systems (Hawks and Demons), which might tick a box or two for some people. Rutten only had 5 years behind him, all at Richmond, when he was appointed at the end of 2019 (even though he waited 12 months after that to officially take the title).

Why Yze? How’s his background any different to Rutten?
He will have been in the system a few years longer and also at two different clubs. On top of that he will be coming in as a fresh voice and not someone who had been in our system for two seasons.

Finally got around to listening to this and holyyyy this is 100% worth a listen. I’ll probably listen again later too, >that< good. Why they didn’t wheel him out sooner idk.

Talks about some of the stuff with the players exit interviews and what sorts of things he said to them about everything when Truck was sacked.

Talked about everyone taking responsibility, that sick feeling we all have is because we’re all partially responsible, haven’t been competitive enough.

It seems that most of the playing group are having a bit of a holiday together in Spain during the off-season, or at least meeting up for a few days while they’re there.

Talked about how the required standard when they come back from the off season is about setting PBs. Made an oblique reference to some players not coming back in good enough condition in the past too, without naming names.

Also the AFLW, the process of putting that list together and the team in charge of that, Georgia Harvey and Harmit Singh who have had a bit to do with list and recruiting (Georgia more extensively than Singhy) together with Brendan Major and Charlotte Miller (VFLW coach and manager respectively).

Was asked about his reported disagreements with Adrian Dodoro, was quite diplomatic in saying that they’re all passionate about the club and ultimately all want the same things.

When recruiting new players the line is all about this clean out is driven towards creating the best possible environment and the best version of Essendon, which should also be better resourced as well.

Thorburn is regarded as being in charge of the external review process. The more I hear about this the more I suspect it’s about the operation of the board and the CEO rather than the small folk.

Asked him if he’s interested in the newly vacated CEO role, said he’s already lost a lot of sleep having to wear the Senior Coach and GM-Footy hats simultaneously and doing all the 1 on 1 chats with the players.

It’s about getting the right people in the right roles — sounded similar to Jobe’s bus analogy from the other week.

Asked about XC and Truck getting paid out — that’s someone else’s job.

And then of course the search for a senior coach, talked a bit through the panel members and how experience doesn’t necessarily mean as a senior coach — could be significant industry experience like Fagan. Didn’t get much more detail on that as far as I can recall.

Overall a very good interview though and sounds like a safe pair of hands — something the rest of the joint is sorely lacking.

Edit: Here’s a better link:

6 to 8 weeks of psychological testing?

This is why you have to be wary of process for its sake.

If the answer isn't "you can stick your psychological testing up your arse"...

What could this possibly help with?

You want to trust a significant component of the process to a profession a significant part of which is made up of people who don't know whether they are coming or going?
