Speaking of Commonwealth Games and AFL Grand Finals

Hawthorn won Grand Finals in 1986 and 2014 when the Commonwealth Games were held in Scotland (Edinburgh and Glasgow)
West Coast won Grand Finals in 2006 and 2018 when the Commonwealth Games were held in Australia (Melbourne and Gold Coast)

Also, Hawthorn were also triumphant in the 1986 and 2014 Grand Finals, in which the late Olivia Newton-John performed as part of the pre-match entertainment.

There's also a coincidence in the wooden spoon team for these years with St Kilda finishing last in 1986 and 2014 when Hawthorn won, and Carlton on the bottom of the ladder in 2006 and 2018 when West Coast Eagles won. Also the Subiaco Lions were WAFL premiers in 1986, 2006, 2014 and 2018.

Chris Masten and Chris Lewis

Both were suspended for biting in the years West Coast lost grand finals to Hawthorn and both played 215 games.

In 2017 Collingwood knocked Melbourne out of finals contention by beating them in the last round

In 2022 Collingwood knocked Carlton out of finals contention by beating them in the last round

On a similar theme, Melbourne’s last 5 grand final appearances have been in years in which the summer Olympics were held:
1960
1964
1988
2000
2021

Thank God for COVID. Otherwise your excellent sequence would have ended.

Omen for Geelong fans

2007 Labor won election, finish 1st 18-4 record, win grand final
2022 Labor won election, finish 1st with 18-4record, _______ grand final

Difference between 2022 and 2007 was that the Eagles won 2006 and they didn’t in 2021 (missed finals)

2022 - Carlton lose to Collingwood by a point in the final round, losing their spot in the finals that they had held since Round 1 and allowing the Western Bulldogs into the finals.

1977 - Carlton hold a spot in the finals at the end of every round except Round 22, when they lose to the Bulldogs in the last game and South Melbourne get into the finals.

1944 - Carlton lose their spot in the finals in the last round with a 1 point loss to the Western Bulldogs.

Bad omen for Geelong, of their 9 premierships only one has come in an even year that being 1952. The Cats were beaten in Grand Finals in 1992, 1994, 2008 and 2020.

More omens

1943 Labor’s John Curtin won that year’s election, Richmond won the grand final

1974 Labor’s Gough Whitlam won that year’s election, Richmond won the grand final

2022 Labor’s Anthony Albanese won this year’s election, Richmond ______

1975 North Melbourne won that year’s Grand Final, the Liberals won that year’s federal election in a landslide

1996 North Melbourne won that year’s grand final, the Liberals won that year’s election in a landslide.

Well it was an omen of sorts for 2022 as it was Curtins for Richmond after their dismissal

1922: Geelong and South Melbourne were 8th and 9th on the ladder

2022: Geelong and Sydney are likely to meet in the grand final.

The 100 year coincidence continues should both teams proceed and win their prelims
