Calling bullshit that you were ever optimistic enough to think we were certain to kick a goal

There was at least three ( if not 4) all goal side of their opponents and they could have raffled it. All it needed was a kick of any sorts…. Well except a toe stubbing variation…

Felt like we lost a close late twilight/night game at the MCG to Collingwood about four times a year in the early 2010s.

We seemed to always run Collingwood until the last quarter and then there was always a bit of bad luck that cost the game..

Even going back to when the umpire bounced the ball straight to the Collingwood ruckman to give them a goal from the forward pocket one year…

I still think Pies would've won that 2012 SF so not to worry.

It's like the 2019 Geel Semi we were never gonna win after losing that top 4 spot.

From 94 to 2014 we probably should've made at least 2 or 3 more Prelims but stuffed ourselves or had that MCG rule stuff us.

Oh well we can forget the whole year then because for a few weeks we had players miss with covid.

2019- didnt happen because of rioli
2020- didnt happen because of the hub
2021- didnt happen because of covid and hubs
2022- because of covid.

Wow we are still premiers from 2018
what are we lining up for 2023? We have been weakened by our past weakness?

Lol - you are being deliberately negative. Here are just a few areas that could easily improve next year:

-Our preseason fitness is not destroyed by a COVID outbreak
-a new gameplan is implemented
-players can actually get on the field: Allen, Sheed, Gov, Yeo, Chesser, Cole
-Young guys keep improving: Hough, Bazzo, Edwards x 2, Culley, Williams

Looking at that list, It seems impossible not to show improvement. 2022 really was a perfect storm.
I don't think it's going to work like that.

A lot depends on NicNat and Yeo. NicNat has to slim down considerably, but even then better midfielders will shark his taps. Yeo (now that Shuey has lost a yard) is our only dominant midfielder. If he can't get back to his best then we're going to have issues. My guess is he will have stints in the middle to mentor Culley/#2 etc and play off half back.

So that leaves a midfield of Kelly, Sheed (outsiders who have limited effectiveness without a dominant bull or balanced), Shuey, Redden, NicNat (last legs), Cuz, #2, Chesser (midfield punks), and Gaff (just plain ol' shit).

The midfield is just not going to be able to compete. The other issue is non tall defenders. We need players who can break lines with speed and foot skills into the corridor. Yeo can do this. Hurn (last legs), Jones (can break lines with run but can't with foot), Cole (dunno), Rotham, Foley, Witho (Meh).

So we will improve but we're coming from a pretty low base (2 wins, 60%). I find it hard to believe we will win more than 6 games. That's still bottom 4 or thereabouts.

I'm comfortable with bottom 4 again as long as we can see an improved gameplan (execution not important yet), and see some continued development (OA, Chesser, Hoff, Baz, #2 etc). I'm actually way more comfortable with bottom 4 than a spike up the ladder.

I'd have grassroots at the top of the handout list Damien (you AH), so many clubs must have been destroyed by COVID, (not just VIC clubs though)

THEN ...
now comes the procession of those with hands out. And while there will be many worthy people and organisations asking for their share, to me, it is the players who need a truly massive percentage increase.

Man that Embley stub kick absolutely ruined him for me. It’s all I can think of when I reminisce about him. Ropable

How late to the party were you? He was never going to amount to anything when in his first game with his first possession he booted the ball 50 metres the wrong way! :):):):)

The players are well looked after already.

If Covid taught us anything, it’s how soulless the game is without crowds so ticket pricing should be a consideration but none moreso than football at grassroots level

The AFL is actually the custodian of the game, not just the league, and as such it has a duty to ensure the health of the sport as a whole not just the pointy end

I remember having major doubts about him when he started but I think I used to get him mixed up with Andrew Williams

Nah Norm Smith trumps everything.

Embles was a gun that saved us in many big games.

Got unfairly maligned by people with no clue about football (eg Freo supporters) as being a downhill skier, but Embley's best games were often in the close and hard fought wins for the club.

You look back at some of the old games where the Eagles squeaked over the line and it's common to see Embley's name with 20+ possessions next to his name and usually multiple goals as well. Was very much a talisman for the club during his time.

Agreed

ABC Sportstalk went ‘big’ on this very point last weekend.

IMO players are more than adequately paid atm - AFL needs to look at the games future and from a distance it doesn’t sound great.

Junior numbers v other sports and I’d think Aussie Rules is struggling. Feathering the nest of the upper echelons ain’t helpin one iota.

Brisbane is going to get absolutely destroyed. A rematch of the 2021 prelim between Melbourne and Geelong will be interesting.
