The GIANTS have made two changes ahead of a critical clash with Carlton on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Garnett will return to the squad while Grace Hill will make her AFLW debut. Hill signed with the GIANTS on the eve of round one as a replacement player for second round pick Fleur Davies.

The 24-year-old is relatively new to the game, joining the UTS Bats in the AFL Sydney Women’s competition in 2019. She has been a part of the GIANTS’ train on program since May this year and has thrived in the elite training environment. The netball cross-coder is naturally athletic and is expected to bring power and work rate in the backline this weekend.

Georgia Garnett has been cleared to play following her hamstring injury last week, with the pair set to replace Georgie Fowler and Meghan Gaffney who have been omitted.

Saturday’s match is the first home game at Henson Park for season seven.

Better start this week, but need to keep it up. 2 goals to Em Pease in 1Q.

But boy, the umpiring is ****ed. One of our girls took a mark, clearly, but smashed into the ground, called no mark but should have been 50. And so many balls in dispute are being called frees to Carlton.

GREATER Western Sydney emphatically responded to last week's 96-point loss with an assured 17-point victory over Carlton on Saturday afternoon. The 4.5 (29) to 1.6 (12) win keeps the Giants' finals hopes alive, while the Blues' campaign continues to stutter.

Alyce Parker (18 disposals, five clearances) and Georgia Garnett (17 disposals, 12 marks) led a host of Giants ballwinners, including Jodie Hicks (14 disposables), Nicola Barr and Alicia Eva (13 disposals each). Emily Goodsir made an emphatic return from maternity leave with a game-high nine tackles. Cora Staunton kicked two goals for the Giants, including a fourth quarter major which broke the back of the Blues, while Emily Pease also booted two.

The Giants' intent to draw a line under their embarrassing defeat to Adelaide was obvious as they tackled ferociously all game, especially inside their own attacking 50. They matched their aggression with tactical nous as Carlton often struggled to move the ball out of its defensive 50 due to the positioning and discipline of the Giants' defenders behind the ball. Conversely, the Giants looked relatively free-flowing as they moved the ball on rebound through the centre of the ground finding free players.

GWS had likely conceded pre-match that it would not win the ruck contest (Carlton was +35 in hitouts) and the resulting clearances (+12 to the Blues). However, they more than made up for this by winning around the ground contests thanks to Parker, Hicks, Barr and Eva. Carlton had long periods where they controlled possession and had repeat entries into their attacking 50, especially early in the first and third quarters. But on each occasion, the Giants' defence of Annalyse Lister, Tarni Evans and Tanya Hetherington bent but did not break as they absorbed the Blues' attacks.

GWS’s composure was also on display late in the second and third terms where it chipped the ball across half back and the wing in the final two minutes of each quarter. The time-killing tactic invited embarrassment if Carlton had been able to intercept and break quickly, but the Giants' short game was superb and assured as they ran out the game with confidence and breathed life into their season.

Injuries brings opportunities

Pepa Randall’s cruel ACL injury created an opportunity for Goodsir to return to the Giants' list. Goodsir missed season six and the start of season seven after the birth of her son, Cruz, in February. With Brìd Stack’s a late out with a calf injury, Goodsir returned to the Giants' side for the first time in two seasons. She did not waste her opportunity, racking up the most tackles on the ground and providing outside run.

Staunton prevails in spearhead shootout

The AFLW’s two historical leading goalkickers took to the same field at Henson Park. Carlton’s Darcy Vescio (55 AFLW goals prior to this match) and the Giants' Cora Staunton (52) battled it out at opposite ends of the ground but the Irishwoman clearly had the better day. In addition to her two goals, Staunton was a physical presence in marking contests and took on some ruck battles against the Blues' Moody. Vescio could not increase their tally, being well held by Annalyse Lister.

After missing last week’s win against Carlton, Brid Stack will be a test for this weekend’s clash with Collingwood. Stack reported calf soreness late last week and didn’t make it through her fitness test on Saturday morning. The Irish defender will work her way through the applicable rehab and testing this week in order to be cleared for selection for Sunday.

Meanwhile, Georgia Garnett successfully returned from her hamstring injury with an impressive performance on Saturday.

Chloe Dalton continues to progress through her hamstring rehabilitation and remain hopeful for a return at the end of the season.

The GIANTS have made one change ahead of this weekend’s clash with Collingwood with Brid Stack returning to the squad.

Stack missed last weekend’s win over Carlton due to a calf injury but has passed her fitness testing this week in order to be cleared for selection.
The inclusion of the Irish defender will bolster the GIANTS in a bid to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The GIANTS come off a 17-point win over the Blues, while Collingwood only just held onto victory last week with a narrow two-point win over St Kilda. Stack is the only inclusion for the GIANTS, with young forward Jess Doyle omitted.

The match between the Pies and the GIANTS will close out round seven on Sunday afternoon, with the first bounce getting underway at 5:10pm.

Collingwood v Greater Western Sydney at Victoria Park, 5.10pm AEDT

These are two inaugural sides who have only played one another three times since the competition began, and have not met since round four, 2019. Greater Western Sydney boasts two wins to the Pies' one as they prepare to meet for the fourth time. This season, Collingwood's forward pressure has been immense, averaging 16.4 tackles inside 50 thanks to players like Eliza James and Chloe Molloy, but have let themselves down with poor accuracy at goal. Against a Giants defence that is without Pepa Randall, however, Collingwood will be looking to really take advantage.

GWS is averaging just 20.2 clearances this season, 4.5 of which are Alyce Parker's, which presents as an opportunity for the emerging midfield group of Mikala Cann, Molloy and Tarni Brown to really get a handle on the Giants in the middle. Quick, fast clearances that catch the Giants' defenders one-on-one will spell danger for the visitors just as they are trying to get back on their feet.

Collingwood refused to give the GIANTS an inch on Sunday, grinding out a 32-point win at Victoria Park and keeping pace with its top-four opponents.

The Magpies needed to win on Sunday to hold their spot in the top four, and they delivered with a tough defensive performance that held the GIANTS goalless for three quarters, eventually winning 6.10 (46) to 2.2 (14).

After a wasteful opening three quarters that saw the Magpies kick 3.9, they put the foot down in the fourth term to boot another three and notch their biggest win this season. The GIANTS' two goals came in the final quarter, with defender Jodie Hicks sneaking forward to hit the scoreboard and Brodee Mowbray adding another in the final minute. Alison Downie was a force in the ruck, giving the Magpies a 52-13 advantage in hit-outs, but they weren't able to turn that into a decisive clearance advantage. GIANTS midfielder Alyce Parker was the major reason why, repeatedly sharking the Magpies' taps to rack up a game-high eight clearances from her 20 disposals.

The GIANTS looked at their most dangerous early when they were able to link up across the back line and then run the ball out with speed. They fell down in the middle of the ground, however, and were only able to enter their forward 50 on four occasions in each of the first and second quarters, going scoreless in the opening half. Collingwood's ability to be first to the ball – winning the contested possessions 64-42 in the first half – was crucial and gave them a massive territory advantage as they repeatedly supplied their forwards with opportunities.

Parker's stoppage dominance

In the second half on Sunday, Giant Alyce Parker had eight clearances while the Magpies as a team had seven. It was an outstanding half from the GWS midfielder, who won 14 of her 20 disposals after the main break and all her eight clearances. The 22-year-old's dominance meant the Giants turned around the stoppage battle, which they were losing 13-10 at half time but ultimately won 30-20.

The GIANTS have a seven-day break and return home to host Hawthorn at Henson Park.

Another injury disaster for our team!

Youngsters Jess Doyle and Meghan Gaffney will return to the team as the GIANTS look to make it back-to-back wins at Henson Park. Doyle was omitted from last week’s team, while Gaffney returns to the side for her fourth game of the season.

Scans this week have confirmed an ACL rupture for Emily Pease, with the round six rising star set to miss the remainder of the season. GIANTS Coach Cam Bernasconi said: “It’s really disappointing news for Emily, who hurt her knee at training this week. She’s been having a wonderful season and we’re going to miss having her out there for the rest of this year. We’ll support Em in every way and we know this is just a minor setback in what will be a long and successful AFLW career.”

Pease will see a surgeon on Monday and begin her rehabilitation.

Haneen Zreika will miss this weekend’s match due to personal reasons but will be available for selection next week.

The GIANTS take on Hawthorn this Sunday at Henson Park, with the match beginning at 3:10pm.

Some poor defence for that 2nd Hawthorn goal.
Also, poor footy smarts.
From around the wing, right into the Hawthorn forward 50, we effectively pushed the footy in the direction of the Hawthorn goal, wittingly and unwittingly, often having more numbers at the footy, until finally, we pushed the footy so far in that direction, that we successfully found two Hawthorn players on their own running in for an easy goal!
Should never have come to that.

Georgia Garnett another excellent game too.

HAWTHORN'S three-game winning streak has come to a heartbreaking end as a behind with just four seconds remaining handed GWS a thrilling one-point win at Henson Park. Hawthorn led at every change but GWS's territory dominance proved too much in the end, with Nicola Barr kicking a match-winning point with just seconds remaining. The win was a reward for GWS's dominance throughout the day, with the final score 4.10 (34) to 5.3 (33) - 14 scoring shots to eight - reflecting the flow of the game.
