Analysis The go home factor, equalisation, draftees requesting trades

They don't. This one is all on North Melbourne and how much of a shitshow they were this year (+ the dollop of bad luck with their knight in shining armour immediately getting into scandal).
What about henry ? Probably lives closer to his mum than the mcg and still pulls home sickness.

What about perking and bailey Smith threatening non Victorian teams In pre draft interviews that they will leave if they are taken.

Yes they do have problems when their biggest equalisation tool is being manipulated

Do you really believe it's homesickness? That's just a line trotted out because it's more respectful then saying the buying club paid him more or risking the karmatic punch in the face of saying i'm going to win premierships.

Ultimately football players have a right to choose their employer, within reason, and it's much better for all parties that gets out early then a club wasting a year on them. It is also on the club to create an attractive environment that players want to stay in and do their due dilligence about the risk. For the record, I think North did their due diligence, and had this racism scandal not hit Clarkon, this trade request would not have happened.

He's a spoilt brat, it's one of those players you almost want off your list because of the petulant and childish behaviour along with an attitude where he wants everything for nothing. If a club offered you two first rounders, you'd honestly say yes, make him someone's problem.

If only he was a Vic Metro kid wanting to return home from NSW. This narrative would magically disappear.

View on Henry nominating Geelong?

Not like there is 9 other clubs in Victoria?

Bruhn nominating Geelong after 2 seasons?

He's brother plays in Geelong, couldn't get a game, moved on.

Probably wouldn't be able to pick Bruhn out in a police line up.

Thoughts on Tim Kelly going to West Coast? Not like theres only one Perth side.

Tom Boyd got off lightly, but the fact that his request came hot on the heels of Griffen’s did ameliorate it.
Have heard that he was a bit of an outsider at GWS.

So its ok for Vic sides but not the other way around!

Got it. Thought so.:thumbsu:

I don't agree with the quotes or journos saying the draft is broken, I would make the following adjustments -

1. Adjust the first contract of first round draft picks for 3 years (to at least give clubs a bit more insurance as in the case of GWS with Boyd and now North with GWS)

2. If a player still under contract wants to return to another state, make it conditional they cannot nominate one specific club only, state only and in this instance the club who offers the leaving player's club the best and fair offer trade wise gets him (this doesn't apply to out of contract players)

Under my proposal, this gives smaller/struggling clubs and the likes of The Suns and GWS at least a bit more of a fighting chance to get better returns on their high investments.

Just the latest example of how broken the AFL “equalisation” landscape is.

A struggling team that is gutted from every angle kicked in the guts by a pretentious bogan child who would have been actively egged on by a stronger team to create this disruption.

He will leave, North will get two shiny new toys and the spiral will happen again in a few years time.

First round draft picks should be mandatory 3 year contracts with the club/player given the option to extend and increase terms from the 3rd year.

A douchebag like this kid would probably still request a trade but most others would at least have time to mature and learn to live away from home.

The current system is only creating have’s and have not’s and condemning smaller clubs to be AFL Development teams to be picked off. It’s shithouse and doesn’t enthuse fans to continue.

NBA is 2 years plus the club gets the option for 2 more.

The AFL need that when the new CBA is being looked at and the AFLPA is pushing for 20% payrises.

I agree with 3 years mandatory, but could that still deter someone asking out after 1 year?

Look I actually don’t think anything would deter this prat. The AFL apparently has rules for teams to not talk to contracted players but we know this is all bogus.

I think the 3 years would most help the general kid that needs a little more time to settle. They are only 18 so are still really immature even though they are probably far more disciplined then many the same aged.

They won’t change the draft age to 22 so the next best bet is to increase the tenure. I also don’t like that players nominate clubs, I think if players can do that then clubs should also be able to trade them wherever they like.

It’s generally not appropriate to speak to the player themselves during the year when they need to concentrate on playing, but there’s nothing wrong with talking to managers, I’m sure that happens all the time.

It’s then up to the manager when the appropriate time is to discuss with the player, if at all.

The NBA puts all their resources into keeping the highest draftees in their drafted place

AFL should look at how they go about it

It's impossible to police each and every communications unless the AFL wire taps thousands and thousands of phones, email addresses, letter boxes, carrier pigeons etc etc

'Tampering' is gonna happen, one way or another. It's futile to think it can be prevented

Put the resources into something actually useful

I don’t think there’s a rule against it. But it’s a small industry, you don’t want to be that guy.

Yep two years in a row and haven’t had the chance to select the best player . Then the afl go and give us two shitty picks as compo, meanwhile gc have had enough selection they are giving away pick 7

Maybe Father/Son should be eradicated. There's no real logic behind this relic of the past

It's purely a romantic thing

Ignoring Bruhn and Henry going to Geelong ?

All the hoo-ha has been about Rankine and now JHF. Nothing has really been said in the media re Bruhn or Henry ( at least he isn’t getting a game). The hypocrisy is staggering

Great to see these SA boys head home early in their careers - and Jackson - hopefully clubs will think twice about using a high pick on Adelaide boys
