We really should have given him the option of extending by a few years with a huge salary reduction to smooth it. The cultural ramifications of this could be bad.

I reckon he would of been super frustrated not getting a regular gig and then this salary dump suggestion was the cherry on top.

That period in 2021, when he played as HB is interesting. A lot of people liked him there but not me. A lot of cheap possessions, safe short kicks, made some blunders there regularly, does not have a penetrating kick, not great speed. Wish he got a full year in the middle. Shoulder reco ruined his chance this year and lost his confidence. Instead Fiorini got opportunity and still it was not in the middle. It's Anderson, Rowell all the way. Hopefully, Holands, Flanders, Davies progress.

Gook luck Jack. I think he will make it in a good system/team like Cats. Not that I like them and all that off-field s**t. I actually value him more than Fiorini and Brodie.

There is usually a bit of both in these things. If Bowes was clear best 22, nothing is happening. If he is playing VFL, then he is probably thinking about where to play.

But the moral of the story for a young footballer is not to overly back end a deal. A few % points is fine, but heavily backloading can only hurt the player, not help them. Treloar, now Bowes and Haynes. If those deals stay flat then the footballers are probably not under the pump from the club. No good.

Another data point that the club still is a basket case when it comes to player management . This is shit from the signing to a contract that was too big, to the renegotiating that put us in a position to have to dump, Brodie, 2MP, Bowes, Fiorini and who know who else, to the outright idiocy of giving away pick 7 without trying to split it or get something decent in return. Cameron is a dangerous fool

Personally after reading that (all which isn’t new information, we’ve all speculated the last few weeks that the club asked him to back end the deal), it’s quite comparable to what a lot of posters are suggesting we do to Atkins. Trade him to another club because he’s not best 22 and on too much coin, that’s it in a nutshell. The club gave both of them lofty contracts and both for various reasons haven’t wasn’t them.

Am I right in saying that because it’s Rory Atkins it would be seem as acceptable and encouraged but not for Bowes?

Probably.

Interestingly, nobody is upset about Fiorini situation which is quite similar. Also interestingly, Fiorini manager actually praised how the club handles his situation and there is no bad blood. Fiorini was in the same situation last year according to manager but decided to stay and fight for the spot in the best 22.

On the other hand fiorini was going to be allowed to stay if he couldn’t find a club

No one would want atkins. Also he's on 400k so although way too much for him it's not 600-800. Good chance we threw his name up aswell.

I did not read the article in detail. Did it say that the club told Bowes he has to go and can't stay? Basically Treloar? I remember, Cameron mentioned in one of his interviews that they told him in exit interview that he will probably struggle to get opportunities in AFL next year and if I remember correctly that the club would be happy if he explores opportunities.

I checked the article. You can only guess if the club would allow him to stay.
It meant when the Suns told Bowes they were interested in trading him at this year’s exit meeting he was hurt but prepared

I'm not sure I'm reading this right......isn't Bowes contracted with the Suns for the next 2 years..........if so, then he doesn't have to go anywhere, he can stay for the length of his contract, and for the salary stipulated, but he's probably been told he's not best 22....

Only reason everyone is upset is he’s a QLDer.

Bowes having family and friends defending him without any actual reasoning besides “you’ll find out in time” does not help.

Can Bowes take a pay cut and just play half back for the rest of his life?

Nah that doesn’t work out for anyone.

I’m happy for Bowes to stay but where does he even get into our team

Correct.

The question for me is - Did the club tell him he has to go like in case of Treloar.

Cameron certainly said that during exit interview the club told him he is not best 22 and will probably struggle for AFL opportunities as some players got ahead of him. I actually think that's correct evaluation of Bowes performances.

Well Bowes is on basically 2.5x Atkins though.

Most people had us bottom 4, then called our season a failure, 2 wins outside the 8. It's a joke.
Many of us, myself included saw 10 wins as a pass mark. That we were able to achieve that with a decimated backline in the second half of the season made it our best year ever IMO.
Naturally it’s not something we want to be satisfied with but we are clearly heading in the right direction. I wouldn’t call heading in the right direction a fail.

Definitely starting to feel in treloar (but less messy to the extent where he kicked and screamed about not wanting to leave) areas.
Sounds like while he was hurt initially, he was more prepared to start looking around. So what, they thought nobody would be interested if they didnt throw in pick 7?

I promise you, no-one would be interested without pick 7

I know his contract is big, but if clubs were interested in him as a player surely there would have been a way to spread his contract out.
You think Freo would have been interested in Brodie without that pick?

I feel for him in the sense he was moved on and didn’t want to leave.

Apologies if that came across as an attack on you.

I’m just tired of the “poor Bowes” rhetoric.

Club is doing what they think is best for the future and the way I see it Bowes isn’t getting the worst deal either way.

It’s just business

He must have really wanted his 1.6mil over 2 years not 4/5. And so he should, it’s what he’s owed.
