Cranks, hope you’re well mate and I hope things are going better in your hospital for you guys!
There was a recent herald sun article on my hospital. It didn’t get media traction. Some was not accurate (the bits about the reported patients) but the structural and staffing issues described are (though the leaders named in article that left were actively headhunted and we were/ are sorry to see them leave)

Thread has been cleaned up.

This is not the SFA or the Bay. Personal attacks and trolling do not suffice as conversation on the SRP. If you do not like another poster, put them on ignore or argue with them in a way that doesn't amount to attacking the man not the ball.

Let's behave like the adults we presumably are.

of all the peeps 2 criticise others 4 being "permanently outraged" u should be the last. but that would require self reflection.
I'm always amused with conservatives that talk about people on the left being permanently outraged when they have a hissy fit over literally anything that isn't racist, sexist or homophobic like the world is ending

Dan blaming covid for the worst ever ambulance response times. He needs to wake up to himself.
The real answer (as someone from an ED) is
  • ambulance ramping due to no staffed cubicles due to patients waiting to be admitted to wards where there aren’t beds (usually because no dischargeable but also junior inpatient staff are decision avoidant/ anxious/ believe need consultant approval)
  • delays to exit for RACF patients who need a non urgent ambulance to go home
  • mental health patients being placed on involuntary orders who have no bed for days so sit in ED or in medical wards getting minimal psychiatric care (as psych team have hands full with existing patients)
  • unreasonable or unachievable expectations that hospital can find safe housing on discharge for patients in homeless state

To add to this a lack of people able to see GPs so use 000 as a "check up" service, a lack of health literacy and out-dated questioning at ESTA to triage patients.

As much as I dislike him, it’s a nation wide issue, not just Victoria. Something needs to be done for the country as a whole.

stop brining in workers from overseas and try and get more australians into jobs like these? 🤷‍♂️

same with hospitality, industry was happy to pay peanuts (and cash) for cheap labour (international students and foreigners for example) until the workers all went home during covid. Now they complain they cant get workers because Australians want to be paid on the books, with super and at a decent rate.

yep the pain points in every state and territory are surprisingly similar by and large

there are differences and some things are done better in some states

and ambulances aren't the same everywhere in how they work

but the common thread is decades of knowingly underfunding

we're seeing it across so many services, funding doesn't keep up with population

we don't have the population growth to support the workforce growth in a lot of areas

then there is this

the workforce exploitation of overseas workers doesn't work as well locally, a lot of industries have suffered having to deal with competing against more attractive jobs for a smaller workforce

its why they have been pushing so hard to get migration going again, they don't want to pay to fix the issue

geez, a sensible conservative. take a bow.:clapping:

AV has very little overseas workers if any. The unis pump out more students than the service can take in and this happens all across Australia.

AV hasn't been underfunded for a while now, what we have is a severe mismanagement of allocation of funds and severe issues with forward planning/general dipshittery between number counters and what happens on road.

Pay rates for difficulty seem way out of whack when comparing nursing/ paramedic with rates paid for financial sector

Anything controlled by government is severely underpaid unless you have a union boss with dirt on the Premier.

If the suggestion of politicians wages being tied to their own wages policies got through then pay would go through the roof!!!

Do you think the workers get fair compensation in AV for the conditions they work in?
I know that isn't necessarily a funding issue specifically, can be misuse of funds and poor management as you say.

Wages are part of funding so just curious where you see that, because wages seem to be a major issues across aged care and healthcare, depending on your role.

They never seem to be able to find the money to pay a lot of people that are needed very well

At this stage and with out current conditions I'd say we aren't fairly compensated, however for someone like myself it wouldn't take much to improve conditions, namely removal of double nights, to be seen as fairly compensated. MICA and to an extent CI/PE positions aren't paid well enough for their current role and what's expected of them from the organisation.

I know that we will be pushing for a larger wage increase in our next EBA, so I expect our wages will better match what we should be getting paid as ALS paramedics.

Misuse of funds and poor management well that's been an ongoing thing and I don't see it changing anytime soon.
