probably cos he didnt play his first finals series until he was 28. nearly all of them were in his thirties. and despite this and despite the fact that many of his finals were played away from full foward he still kicked 64 goals in finals at an average of 4.0 per game.

this is better then all the other gun fowards of the modern era.

dunstall averaged 3.7 goals per game in finals.
Lockett averaged 3.9 goals per game in finals
Carey averaged 2.6 goals per game in finals.
Lance franklin 2.6 goals per game in finals.

ablett stands above all of them in finals. And he only played 5 of his 16 finals in his twenties.

28 is still prime age and he lost them all so maybe the kick it to Ablett plan didn’t work.

33 games total (9 of which were finals). Played in 2 grand finals (almost 3 but was dropped after the 09 prelim)

Played most of those games as a forward, for a total of 10 goals

Managed a solid 15 disposals and 1 behind in both GF appearances combined. Then delisted (re-rookied for 1 year) by never managed another game after those GF's

It wasnt that crazy. Matera averaged 27 possessions that finals series From 3 games (all wins).

in that same finals series paul couch averaged 28 disposal per game and he played 4 games (two of them Loses).

They were three great games, and they're pretty incredible stats for the era regardless of where on the ground he played tbh.

In 1992, nine players averaged over 25 touches per game. In 2022, nearly forty players did the same.

Regardless of Couch, Matera was pretty exceptional.
