Oh no doubt.

But once again - The benefit of hindsight allows us to see what's true and not with regards to club speak. Walsh knew where our list was at and identified it perfectly. Suggested we would be in the bracket to contend in 2017 which is exactly what happened.

IMO - the club has done plenty wrong over the journey, but they got it right in 2014 with the appointments and the strategy.

They also did the right thing beginning in August of 2019. They called for a complete external review, Fired the head coach, fired Burton and Campo, changed captain, cleared out 8 senior players to begin the rebuild and created a new head of cultcha.

For me this is a massive 12 months for the club. I personally don't think that Nicks is the right guy to lead us to the next step. As tragic as it is - I think the best thing for the club is a 4-5 win season.

That way we get rid of Nicks at the end of 2023 - have another year of development into our young list and then bring in a coach who can take us to the next step. Happy to keep Sloane as Captain this year and then transition to our new coach/captain combo. Looking at the list - I think that our list profile and age will be just slightly younger than our rd 1, 2015 side. New coach comes in and we make finals in 2024/2025 and really contend in 2026.
Sloane can't be Captain next year. It was already one year too many this year. He's not guaranteed a spot in the team. In fact if I pick a best 22 right now, I can't find a spot for him.

I loved Sloane as the gut running flanker/winger who created mismatches all over the park. It was his best asset in the first half of his career.

To his credit he got moved inside and also played well, but unfortunately its come at a massive cost of completely sapping all of his pace and seemingly left him unable to go back to what he was before he moved inside.

It's sad, but I also see him as a fringe player going forward

I agree 100%. At his best he was terrific and one of my favourites.

Now? He looks well past his best and a fringe player.

Cy Walsh is the biggest reason why we are where we are, and I'll never not believe that.
It's impossible to know how much of a sliding doors moment that really was for the previous group. There is a chance we'd be rebuilding under Walsh right now though instead of Nicks, which is painful to think about. I'd love to have seen a footy side built by Walshy from the ground up.

But he will be(Capt).

I think he offers more than Ned in the same position. Besides that, I agree.
Agree that a fit Sloane has a role to play as a forward. Decent mark & kick for goal as well as good pressure.

Time for a change in captaincy though. Free him up like Tex.

Couldn't agree more. This should have been the go a season before he cooked his knee.

He's always been a surprisingly dangerous, yet underutilised player around goal.

Absolute Champion he is, but I never thought he was a natural Captain.
I think he's more than proven this, but if we are going to insist on playing him, I'd love to see him only have to worry about his own game.

He really should be made to earn his place in the team, I hope that we just hand over a place to him because he is fit.

He needs to prove himself in the SANFL as he wont be playing any trial games given it wont be 12months since his injury.

We don't want to be carrying him, so yeah he needs to be fit.

Not sure about the pressure any more. Very slow.

My FWD:

Rachele Fog McAdam
Walker Thilthorpe Rankine

Then I'd want:
Pedlar, Soligo, Cook, Taylor all before Sloane, that's without adding a resting mid such as Keays or Schoenberg

Feel the same.

Sloane is a big step backwards for the AFC.

We are wasting games and opportunities on Sloane in all reality will likely retire in 2023.

I think you could take 2 from that highly potent forward line and throw them into the midfield mix.

No use having such a great fwd 6 if we persist with what we have in the guts.

I'd prefer to have either Rankine or Rachelle in the guts with Sloane up fwd than the other way around.

If Sloane is fit to play, he plays. We have to accept that.

My midfield:

Wings: Cook, Dawson then Hinge, Hamill, Taylor, Nankervis, Sholl
Ruck: ROB (no other option really)
MIDS: Berry, Laird, Soligo, Schoenberg + rotations of Rankine and Rachele. Then add some time for Taylor and Pedlar (hopefully for both)

Again I've not included Keays, let alone Sloane.

I just don't see how he gets picked and if he does, it is just to the detriment of our development (and also probably our chances of winning).

Look I don't disagree that it is time that we move on from Sloane as captain, but I also believe that his return from injury at Adelaide oval (I'd bring him in off the bench at some stage) will be inspirational and potentially team lifting. It will certainly get the crowd alight.

I think that's achieved if Sloane is captain or not.

He has been a great player for our club. And I do think that he still has something to offer at AFL level, as a player and a leader in a very young group of players.

If he's training fit, he will get picked, and they will justify selection as they always have,I.e, Leadership,experience,pressure/hardness whatever. I get, and agree with what your saying, but we have to be realistic. He's the Captain of the club.

We aren't there yet where we can make the hard, yet obvious and proactive calls otherwise we wouldn't be hearing the pre-emptive, softening rhetoric from Rory already.

At best, they give him enough rope to hang himself with ala V.B.

Keays will play every game unless injured..He's 25 years old...

Cook is barely up to SANFL standard at the moment. Would require a massive lift from arching him in the SANFL finals

I like him by the way just think he has stagnated badly

Hamill needs to stay in the park and Nank still has a way to go but is promising.

Unlikely any of those three are in front of Keays over the next 2 years
