Our game plans, or some pretty friggen poor attempts at goals at key moments, by key players, in very important games???:think:

I dont disagree our game plans need evolving.
We fixed things on the fly, letting big margins go because we left the middle of the ground open etc.

But there's two clear gameplans in the AFL. We're good at one and don't do the other at all.

Should we have expected any announcements prior to pre-season training commencing?
Seems perhaps the coaching group is settled for the time being.

Brad Ebert joining as a development coach

Are we being tightarses with the football department again? You'd think the Club would add more than a single development coach with the soft cap increase and Teague's salary off the books
Without seeing the books it’s pretty hard to know where the dollars are going, but I doubt we’re not spending money just for the sake of it.

Could be something like some extra coin heading to the medical team or somewhere else outside of the coaching group.

Or we’ve tried for some ‘bigger names’ but they haven’t wanted to move.

Can’t really know from sure from outside the club.

Have the same concerns. Especially when you then look at Essendon willing to blow open the soft cap to put an amazing coaching panel in.

Not to mention is it even an addition? Every really replaces O’Keefe doesn’t he

Amazing coaching panel? Stanton has come good now he's not with us? Hurley? Cloke? Tudor? Jacobs?

Collingwood and Richmond as well - our naive playing group could really benefit from some experienced ex-senior coaches

Considering we are supposed to be debt free and the soft cap has increased I would be astounded if we failed to build on our coaching group.

I feel tactics and development have been real weak areas for us. Development has improved but tactically we were terrible last year, it cost us finals. We made changes on the fly but the better teams all came out with two distinct game plans, one of the main ones we completely lacked the ability to go to or cope with. We came into 2022 and dropped the ball tactically.

I would suggest that we need to look to our weak areas and improve here. Focus on targeting coaches for these areas.

Our forward line is an area that needs developing, the players as individuals and tactically as a whole as well. Let's invest more in there. Our midfield I feel has one gear, hunt the footy while our whole game plan is based around our midfield dominating clearances, there's a bit to be desired there in terms of tactics and as a team, how we implement multiple game plans, how the different areas on the field all sync up.

Looking at our coaching panel I would say it's ok without being super strong. Voss great player from a great side, coaching career not super strong, some ok results. Hamill, great player played in some ok sides, coaching career not super strong (St Kilda). Clarke, been around a few sides, time at Richmond but not when they were having great success so ok coaching career but not super strong. Hansen played in a successful side and was a coach at the bulldogs during their successful years. Power part of a super successful side as a player but not as a coach yet. O'Keefe didn't have a strong playing career nor has he had a strong coaching career yet. Kreuzer, always been at Carlton, has not seen success as player or coach yet. Greaves, he's more of a coaches coach I believe. Baker, not sure of his role, a development coach of some sort. Brad Ebert comes in from a career playing at moderately successful clubs, he could be really good, who knows.

Reading into our coaching group, outside of Brisbane's premiership team's of the early 2000's there's not a great deal of premiership success. Lack of influence from the great eras of the great teams of the last 15 years. No Hawthorn, Geelong or Richmond influence. There are quite a few who did not have much of an AFL career or an AFL career at all.

Would love to see someone come from one of these clubs in a tactical role. Head of strategy or opposition analysis. Just so we don't go into games too blind and so that we improve our tactics, game plan and when to implement strategies. This is one of the weakest areas at the club and one we need to improve on.

Rumours of Selwood coming to us would be ideal. Selwood as opposition analysis and strategy, someone fresh out of the game, the captain of the most successful club in 2022 and the last 20 years. Exactly what we need.

One of Carlton's failings over the last 20 years has been it's failing to support it's coach and build an elite off field team. Learning from that and not repeating that must be top priority.

For mine our coaching group is not quite as strong in terms of it's resume as some of the teams who finished above us and I feel that it showed this season. Need to keep building and improving the onfield team and the off field team.

First time I’ve heard * and amazing in the same sentence in quite some time, unless incredulous!

We have a small coaching group...

I'd be happy to invest the extra cap in anything or anyone that would help to elevate
some of the work load pressures, off our current coaches...

Instead of coaches working ridiculous weekly hours (70+), I'd like to see Carlton lead the way with giving staff some work life balance and spending some time with their families, could only be a positive for moral, mental health and productivity...

Interesting thought. One it is very difficult to rationalise. Work/life balance is a wonderful thing. It is, however an unknown as to the investment of each of our coaches, physically, emotionally, chronologically. We cannot understand the dynamic from our keyboards.

We have a number of senior players exerting leadership levels on the group. The group seems focussed as a unit. Are the coaches running all of the drills or do we have Crippa, Weiters, Doc, Ed, Newy or even a younger Walshy running some of the drills? I was under the impression Jack Russell would play a prominent role in the day to day activities, particularly pre Christmas. We do not currently have a big percentage of under 21 “beginners” needing massive “kid gloves”.

Also, our coaches are predominately “new” and one would hope, very engaged. A seventy hour week for someone completely invested in a work pursuit that is also a “love” is not always excessive. How much down time did the coaches get over the off season? Would it be close to two months as for the players? It is hard for us on the outside to assess the loads of our coaches, which would definitely vary seasonally.

Face value says we are a coach or an analyst or two light, but who of us really knows? Do we have more changes to announce?

Coaching environment is highly competitive and performance based, if individuals take the foot off the pedal and the team drops off a few percent then that gets noticed. Could lead to coaches losing their jobs. I think all our coaches would be aware of this and be wanting to keep their finger on the pulse.

For where our list is at, it's very good, the expectations are very high, we are coming off a season where we underperformed and a lot of that downfall was from entering the season with underprepared tactics wise, being very green tactically and having game plan issues throughout the season. A lot of people blame injuries but I don't, tactics and poor game plan was very obvious, it cost us games and percentage even when we were fielding strong sides not overly affected by injury and even our weaker teams should have been good enough to make the 8. If you review our season tactically we come out very poor IMO.

IMO our coaching group must be aware of this and you would think they would be willing to rectify this. I think we have a lot of work to do tactics wise, we are still developing in this area. Another failing will see heads roll in our off field department so the last thing we need to do is slacken off.

Where our coaching department needs to expand is to have more hands to cover more of the work. We are dangerously thin in our coaching department when it comes to having people who have been at the really successful clubs in recent times (Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong). We are really thin when it comes to tactics and opposition analysis. What we need to do is invest in people who specialise in these areas. Clubs who have, who have brought in opposition analysis and tactical experts or senior assistants with a history of success have managed to find that extra 10%. This is what we need to do.

Looking at the coaching panel we have, looking at their previous club's success as players and coaches it's incredibly underwhelming. I think it does matter. I think we have a strong coach who can grow leadership and culture but I felt we fell behind tactically in a big way last year. Other teams went past us during the season in terms of how they defended and attacked the game.

I'm actually a bit surprised with who we have running the club and how hard they chased guys like Alistair Clarkson last year that our we haven't chased people from successful clubs more. Maybe we have and just can't get them. I hope we don't have to wait another season of underachievement to realise where we need to improve on.

IMO I am really concerned around our coaching and tactics going into next season. Not concerned about the list or the player quality, not overly concerned about injuries either as our depth looks great.

As for having the coaches work less. Will never happen, doesn't happen in the real world, there is always someone hungry enough to want to put in the work and the boss will want results and they no doubt will drop off. For a list that's physically mature but tactically green I believe the coaches have their work cut out.

Welcome Tom Lonergan
Finalising our coaching team for next year

Always like beefing up the development team however really wished we brought in someone to fix our ball movement

We have beefed up on development coaching, I can only assume these are people who focus on individuals and improving their game whereas a lot of the general coaches focus on groups. Was hoping we would beef up on strategy and opposition analysis as this is clearly a weak point, backing in who we have to get that right and they will have to, should that be a weakness again...

I think the 'tactics' side has been a work area, but I saw it in 2022 as a bunch of new coaches coming together, having to get to know one another as well as players, and unpacking and redrawing game plans, all in a few weeks before a pre-season, and then having to build on the fly as dealing with injuries. I look forward to continual improvement, building on some positives from this past year.

As an aside, is there anything else you would've like Vossy to have sent in his recent email? I reproduce from his email below what I saw as some of his key points:

"On the field, we’ll look to grow our contested game even more, while adding layers to our transition, both with and without the football.

Off the field, it is continuing to establish our culture, based on selflessness and being a good teammate.

A strong connection to one another is a trademark our playing group is beginning to wear with pride. There is a growing understanding that you put the hard work in for your teammates, not just yourself.

These innate behaviours are developed over many pre-seasons, not just one.

Given our lack of continuity during last season, our group as a whole didn’t get the chance to spend extended periods together on the field, however this pre-season gives us that opportunity – to build depth to our game plan and have that natural growth that will come as we spend more time together."
